Chapter Index

The meal was continued with Rain joining in.

She kept fiddling with her hair while she ate.

Rain’s slightly swollen head looked so sore.

    “Rain. Are you okay?”

    I carefully stroked Lane’s head.

The burning heat spread through my hair and into my hands.

    “Ugh…”

Lane nodded with a large piece of bread in his mouth.

I looked up at Ferman, who was still pushing food in front of me.

Ferman cutting the meat into bite-size pieces for me to eat easily.

I met his gaze and began to ask him questions I had been wondering about.

    “Grandpa Perman.”

    “Why, Jeff.”

    Big!

The moment Ferman answered my question, Victor started coughing loudly.

He covered his mouth and spat out a cough, not even thinking about hiding his reddened face.

It looked like the food had been eaten too quickly.

    “I have a question.”

    “Ask me anything.”

Ferman answered my question with a small smile.

Swish- The small plate that had been in front of Perman is pushed towards me.

I picked up a small piece of meat with a fork and put it in my mouth.

I was mumbling while thinking of what to say, then I swallowed the meat in my mouth and answered.

“Chu-Chu, that’s right. How can I use my powers?”

I was so curious I couldn’t stand it.

It was something I had never heard of before, that any living being, not even a human, could use abilities.

    “Chu-chu. Are you talking?”

    “Yes.”

My gaze and Perman’s turned to Chuchu, who was eating in the corner of the room.

He was eating voraciously the delicious meat that was served on his small table.

    Swish swish swish-

“Chuchu was a puppy rescued from a laboratory.”

    “Laboratory…”

“Yes. It was a place where they conducted illegal human experiments to transplant human abilities into other living beings.”

    “Human experiment…”

I muttered in a small voice.

    Laboratory. Human experiment.

Scenes that came to mind vaguely flashed through my mind.

I said, rubbing my forehead with my hand.

    “Was the experiment successful?”

“If you look at Chuchu, it may be considered a success, but all the research data from there was destroyed.”

    Disposal of research materials.

The moment I heard Perman’s words, a deep regret surged into the depths of my heart.

I asked Ferman with some hope.

“Then what about the people who were researching there?”

Ferman did not answer right away.

He lifted the long bread and gave a small smile.

    “They’re all gone.”

The soft bread is torn in two.

I swallowed dry saliva as I looked at the sight.

“In some ways, Chuchu could be seen as similar to you.”

    “Yes.”

    I nodded absentmindedly.

Yes. Me. Shine and I in the lab.

    So. You were experimented on?

What kind of experiment was done?

    I don’t remember.

    “Hmm.”

I rolled the spaghetti around my fork, searching through my hazy memories.

    “Jeff.”

    “Huh?”

    “What are you thinking?”

    “Old memories.”

If you think about it, it wasn’t that long ago, but it felt like a really long time ago and was vague.

Shine looked at me like that and then held out his fork.

Her fork was loaded with a green salad.

    “Ugh.”

I made a disgusted expression at the grass that was approaching me.

“Jeff. You only ate meat today.”

“I didn’t just eat meat. I also ate spaghetti.”

“You have to eat vegetables too.”

    “I hate it.”

“If you don’t eat like that, you won’t grow taller, right?”

I kept my mouth shut at Shine’s words.

But if I don’t want to eat it, I don’t want to eat it.

    “Eat quickly.”

    “Ugh.”

Only then did I open my mouth and eat the salad, thanks to Shine’s urging attitude.

It was somewhat edible because it was covered in a lot of dressing.

The crunchy, crumbly texture and the deep, grassy scent filled my mouth.

I quickly moved my hands and shoved the meat into my mouth.

“Shine takes good care of her younger sibling.”

“Yeah. Jeff is my precious little brother.”

    Shine answered Perman’s words.

She opened her mouth, sending me a gaze that seemed to be looking at something precious.

    “I like Jeff the best.”

Ferman gave a small smile at Shine’s words.

I bowed my head to Shine’s words.

I was sensitive to her feelings.

In the words she spoke of, there was a slightly different feeling mixed in.

It was a feeling that was sticky and hot, heavy enough to grab my ankle and not let go.

“Do you like me too, Jeff?”

I mumbled without being able to answer.

Just as I was sensitive to her feelings, she was sensitive to mine.

    So she must know too.

I’m talking about a very weak emotion that has settled in a corner of my heart.

    “Yeah. Yeah. Okay.”

So, let’s hide it a little.

He presses it down hard and hides it deep inside so she won’t find out.

I answered with a small smile.

Shine frowned as if she was dissatisfied with my answer.

But she didn’t ask for any more answers.

Instead, more salad was shoved into my mouth.

I bit into the crisp grass with a sad expression on my face.

    I felt like a rabbit.

As the meal continued, Amy suddenly got up from her seat after checking her phone.

    “Amy.”

“Wait a minute. Something came up.”

Amy said it as if it was urgent.

Her expression was set in a rigid manner.

    “What’s going on?”

“It’s none of my business, Dad.”

    “Amy.”

    “I’ll be back shortly.”

Amy said that and jumped up from her seat.

Her gaze turned to me and Shine.

“Sorry. Something urgent came up, so I’ll be back soon.”

    I nodded absentmindedly.

If something serious comes up, of course I have to go. Even I had to run right away when I got a call from Hebrum while I was eating.

    But who is Hebrew?

I tried harder to bring up the hazy memory.

    White gown.

    And sugar.

    Pig. Donut. Cookie.

    snack?

    sinker?

I feel like eating a donut.

I licked my tongue as I pictured the delicious donut.

“Jeff. Do you want to eat something?”

Shine reacted sensitively to my habits.

    I nodded to her words.

“Yeah. I want to eat a donut.”

    “Donut?”

    “Yeah. It’s a round bread. There’s a hole in the middle. ”

I started explaining to Shine what a donut looked like.

It would be nice to have a sketchbook at times like this.

But unfortunately, I didn’t have a sketchbook right now.

    “Is that tasty?”

    “Yeah. It’s sweet bread.”

Shine’s mouth watered as she fantasized about donuts.

As Amy left the restaurant, I immediately turned to Ferman.

Ferman seemed to feel sorry for Amy for leaving during the meal.

He looked at Amy’s empty spot with a sad look.

    “Grandpa Perman.”

    “Uh. Yeah. Jeff.”

When I called Ferman, he turned to me with a small smile on his face.

I looked around to see if Amy was hiding and eavesdropping on our conversation.

Fortunately, Amy was nowhere to be seen.

    “I. I want to eat a donut.”

    “Donut?”

Ferman gestured, unfazed by my sudden request.

As he raised his hand in the air, one of the staff members waiting nearby quickly left the restaurant.

I looked at that sight and gaped.

If I could put people under me and command them with a single gesture, I was confident I could lie down and do nothing.

“The donuts you want will arrive shortly. Now get up.”

Ferman stood up from his seat and looked around at the people who had just finished eating.

Shine, Rain, and I nodded and quickly stood up from our seats.

Chuchu had already finished eating his food and was now approaching Perman.

    “Victor.”

    “Yes.”

    “Did you like the food?”

“It was a really satisfying meal.”

    “Then that’s fortunate.”

When Victor nodded and answered, Ferman nodded slightly and asked again.

“Victor. Do you know why Amy is out today?”

    “Cannot answer.”

    “Is this Amy’s request?”

    “Yes.”

“Yeah. If you put someone behind Amy, she’d hate it, right?”

    “You’d hate that so much.”

“That’s right. You shouldn’t repeat the same mistake.”

Ferman started walking forward, muttering softly.

“Let’s eat donuts in my room.”

    “Yes!”

    I quickly followed behind Ferman.

    “Donut!”

    Rain also followed behind us.

Victor, who had been observing the surroundings, came to our side and started walking with us.

When Ferman glanced to the side, Victor averted his gaze.

“Your appetite is still the same.”

    Victor didn’t answer.

After leaving the restaurant, we walked down the long hallway and arrived at Ferman’s office.

Chuchu ran through the slightly open door and rubbed his large body against it.

With that force, the door swung wide open.

    “Sit comfortably.”

The office that had been a mess since my fight with Amy earlier had been transformed into something so clean.

The sofa must have been torn, but there was a new sofa with the same design as before.

I looked around for my dinosaur bag.

“Jeff. What are you looking for?”

    “My bag… oh!”

As I looked around intently, I was able to find a dinosaur bag on Ferman’s desk.

There wasn’t just one bag. There was mine, Shine’s, and Lane’s chick bag all together.

The three of us ran there and grabbed the bags.

Fortunately, the contents of the bag did not change.

    I looked away urgently.

If Amy returned, this bag would definitely be confiscated.

So, the chocolates inside had to be hidden somewhere.

    A place to hide.

    Desk drawer.

I reached out and grabbed the bottom drawer of Ferman’s desk.

Luckily, the very bottom of the desk was empty.

I spoke to Ferman, poking my head slightly out from under the desk.

    “Grandpa!”

    “Yeah. Jeff. Grandpa’s here.”

It seemed like Ferman was talking to Victor.

Victor and Ferman sat across from each other across the table.

“Can we put our bags under the drawer?”

    “Your bag?”

“Yes! I think I should hide my bag!”

“The bag… Then, I’ll come here every day.”

    “Yes!”

“Hide it as much as you want.”

The desk owner’s permission was granted.

I nodded and shoved the dinosaur bag deep into the drawer.

Shine and Rain also shoved their bags into there.

    The drawer is full.

It was clear that Amy wouldn’t be able to find it here.

If I could come here every time I thought of it and sneak out a chocolate bar to eat, I could easily endure punishments like being banned from snacking.

    “Good.”

    I smiled with satisfaction.
