Chapter Index

The hallway was silent for a while.

Even Kim Iseo looked genuinely flustered right now. She couldn’t have imagined that the visitor was Director Yusaku.

The silence was broken first by the staff.

    Soon, whispering spread.

“Isn’t he the director who was invited to the short film festival?”

“He’s a Japanese master, quite famous in Korea too. He mixes both tastes well. I think he directed ‘Sometimes By Chance’ too.”

“Ah! He’s the director of that! Wow!”

As more and more people began to recognize Director Yusaku, Kim Iseo’s questions deepened.

    So did Sua’s.

‘Oh? Found the person who broke my trophy.’

However, Director Yusaku wasn’t alone. There was a man who looked like an assistant next to him, and the interpreter she had seen before.

Director Yusaku took the initiative to show courtesy.

“I’m leaving the country tomorrow, so I had no choice but to visit today. If it’s not okay, I’ll turn back. I know it’s rude.”

The interpreter next to him translated his words in real-time.

Kim Iseo checked her wristwatch a few times, pondering.

“No, it’s an honor to have Director Yusaku visit. But I have a very important schedule today. Would it be okay if the conversation only lasts for about an hour?”

    “Yes, that’s enough.”

    “Okay. Let’s see… over there…”

Kim Iseo gestured urgently toward the staff.

Meaning to quickly prepare a reception area. The staff understood the meaning immediately and sprang into action.

    Kim Iseo smiled faintly.

“Director Yusaku, may I ask what brings you here?”

    “That’s naturally…”

Director Yusaku looked at Sua instead of answering.

Those who belatedly followed his gaze wore surprised expressions. Director Yusaku nodded as if their guess was correct.

“It’s only because of Sua. It’s all for Sua-ssi.”

    Sua’s eyes widened.

    “You came because of me?”

“Yes. The conversation we’ll have today will center on Sua-ssi.”

Meanwhile, the interpreter didn’t translate the conversation between Sua and Director Yusaku. Having encountered each other during the awards ceremony, he knew that Sua’s Japanese proficiency was excellent.

    Sua continued in fluent Japanese.

“Why is this happening all of a sudden…”

“There’s no need to be nervous. It’s just a simple proposal.”

Surprise slowly spread across the faces of the nearby staff. Well, she was praised for having an announcer’s pronunciation.

Around that time, Kim Iseo nudged Sua in the ribs.

“Sua, I want to hear too. Please translate at the same time.”

    “Understood.”

    Sua nodded confidently.

It was then that Director Yusaku spoke again.

“I was impressed by Sua-ssi’s appearance at the film festival.”

Sua immediately began to translate in real-time, and the director continued.

“If I were to talk about the shock I felt at that time, I could go on all day, but given that you both have limited time today…”

Everyone’s admiration for Sua’s translation skills grew.

“I think I should quickly get to the point today. One hour will be enough. Thank you for agreeing.”

Around that time, the staff returned. It was also a signal that the reception area was ready to welcome the VIPs.

    The proposal began so suddenly.

    .

    .

    .

    .

    .

    *Clink.*

Director Yusaku carefully set down his teacup.

“This is, as an uninvited guest, an undeserved treatment.”

Sua almost blurted out, “I agree,” but pursed her lips. Habit is so scary.

“Above all, it’s great that we can communicate without an interpreter. Today’s conversation won’t take long.”

    “I agree.”

    Sua nods. Sua agrees.

Currently, they were sitting facing each other 2-on-2 inside the reception area. Kim Iseo and Sua, and Director Yusaku and his assistant.

The interpreter wasn’t needed, so he didn’t come in.

“The advantage of being able to communicate is enormous. Especially in this industry. The world that the director is trying to express is delicate, and even a single word conveyed incorrectly can lead to great discrepancies.”

    “That’s right.”

“I feel sorry for breaking the trophy before. Also, my admiration for Sua-ssi remains. So much so that my assistant and I were wondering why Sua-ssi filmed a short film.”

    “Uh-huh.”

Sua no longer felt particularly guilty even if she reacted with “uh,” “ah,” or “eh.” So what! I’m already a lost cause!

    Suddenly, Yusaku asked.

“Sua-ssi, you know well because you’ve experienced both countries, but Korea and Japan have similar yet different charms, right?”

    “Yes.”

In reality, she had never even been abroad. It’s expensive.

But she couldn’t say she hadn’t been there in this atmosphere. Sua cleverly turned the conversation. Sua clever.

“I’m also very interested in Japan.”

She’d encountered it a lot through games and animation, you know.

At that moment, Kim Iseo suddenly interjected. Perhaps due to the limited time, there was a subtly anxious look on her face.

“Director, you said you visited here because of Sua. May I ask for the detailed reason?”

“Ah, I’m sorry. I’ll tell you the proposal right away.”

Director Yusaku’s expression became quite serious.

    “Sua-ssi, please lead our war.”

    “What?”

    Sua inadvertently asked back.

    War? War? What suddenly?

Then Director Yusaku burst out laughing.

“Of course, it’s not an actual war. To put it bluntly, I’m requesting you to participate in my work.”

    “Ah, I see.”

Sua let out a sigh of relief inwardly. Phew.

“My goal is to break the mold of Japanese noir, and to achieve this, a challenge is necessary. However, it must succeed. Failure will only end up being ridiculed.”

“What kind of challenge are you talking about?”

Sua thought. Are we going to stage a protest or something?

“First, take a look at this. Assistant.”

Then the assistant next to the director took out a large tablet and displayed a poster on the screen.

    Sua could recognize it immediately.

“It looks like a poster advertising a contest.”

“That’s right. I was in charge of judging the winning work, and I’ve also decided on the winning work. It’s a very risky but good piece.”

“Um, I’d appreciate it if you could tell me more details.”

    As Sua tilted her head.

“I couldn’t bring the script today, but it’s quite a challenging noir. The role you’ll be playing is a Yakuza role.”

    Director Yusaku continued calmly.

“It’s so challenging that the backlash is currently enormous. Competing noir works have begun production, vowing to crush it, and it will be torn to shreds for the time being.”

“…If the opposition is that strong, isn’t it just a bad piece? Is there something wrong with it?”

“That’s right. But we can turn this into a surefire script.”

Sparks flew from Director Yusaku’s eyes.

“If Sua-ssi participates, then this script can definitely break the mold of Japanese noir. Assistant, show them!”

While the assistant was fiddling with the tablet, Sua conveyed what she had heard to Kim Iseo. He wants to cast me.

What the assistant activated next was a drawing program.

    “…That’s my picture, isn’t it?”

    Sua muttered.

During the profile shoot, she had taken a few full-body photos in addition to something similar to a passport photo. On the tablet, a photo of Sua in a sitting position had been loaded.

What is he trying to do? She couldn’t even guess.

“From now on, we’ll show you the image of Sua-ssi that we had in mind. It will help you consider the proposal.”

    *Swish, swish.*

Immediately after, he moved the pen.

    “Ah.”

Sua immediately realized what he was trying to do.

He was starting to overlay various drawings on Sua’s body. As if he was going to show what Sua would look like with makeup on at this spot.

It wasn’t long because he was so skilled.

“This is what it looks like, what do you think?”

The director next to him nodded with satisfaction.

“That’s it! It was vague when I only thought about it in my head, but it’s clear now that I’ve worked on it like this. After all, this role can only be done by Sua-ssi! Absolutely!”

    “…”

On the other hand, Sua was shocked.

‘This can only be done by me? This kind of role?’

The result before her eyes was an overwhelming shock.

Tattoos and cigarettes were basic, her chest was mostly covered with bandages, revealing quite a bit, and above all, she looked too scary.

    This seems too intimidating…

    Sua scratched her head.

“The image is too different from me, and the makeup seems difficult…”

However, Sua’s words were not finished.

    Because Kim Iseo intervened.

    “This is good.”

There was quite a bit of power in the CEO’s voice.

“There’s practically no makeup needed? It’s at a level where we’re using Sua as she is. The impression is similar to the real thing.”

    “…?”

CEO-nim, what are you talking about.

    Sua quietly looked around.

Um, I’m the only interpreter here.

Sua soon changed her face to a serious expression and parted her lips.

“The CEO says she’s going to think about it for a bit first.”

    “Yes?”

    “Yes, yes? Why?”

As the saying goes, a guilty person is afraid of their own shadow. That’s what Sua was doing now.

“Really? CEO Kim Iseo said that?”

    “Ah, um, uh-huh…”

“Maybe the difference in Korean and Japanese sentiment is the reason.”

    “Yes?”

“In Japan, we call this level of scariness a monster or an oni. They’re so afraid of it that crying babies will stop crying. I’d believe it even if you said Sua-ssi was born just for this role.”

    “…”

“I don’t know how it’s received in Korea, but at least in Japan, it will be called a perfect fit. There’s no need to worry at all.”

    Sua was newly dismayed.

“…Yes. Well, I’ll think about it for a bit.”

    Sua pouts.

Of course, she didn’t reject it just because she was pouting. The fact that she hadn’t checked the script rating yet was also a huge reason.

Yeah, so I’m going to think about it for a bit. Really…

Director Yusaku seemed satisfied with just that.

“Understood. There’s no need to answer right away.”

That’s how everyone got up from their seats.

After going out into the hallway, Director Yusaku began to discuss something with his assistant, and Kim Iseo approached Sua.

    “Sua, how did it go?”

“It’s a casting offer, but I said I’d think about it. The drama hasn’t premiered yet, and I have to discuss it with the CEO.”

    [Because she’s pouting.]

She ignored the special trait’s words.

“They want to cast Sua? Um, then…”

Kim Iseo quickly turned her head.

‘Advancing into Japan itself is a huge deal, but Sua would want the best treatment. It’s not impossible. There’s a way to captivate the master director.’

The CEO, having finished thinking, raised her head.

    “Director Yusaku.”

When Director Yusaku’s gaze turned this way.

“Would you like to accompany us for a moment?”

Kim Iseo said with a faint smile.

“Sua’s drama is starting to air now.”
