Chapter Index

When I opened my eyes to the chirping of unknown birds, the sun was already high in the sky. But what woke me up was not the beautiful chirping of the birds, but the tingling pain I felt around my chest.

    “… Sigh.”

It was also a bit sad to wake up at this hour without anyone to wake me up. Even though it’s been a long time since the war ended, I can’t believe I’ve lost my mind like this. The feeling of your body becoming sluggish is, of course, sad.

I barely got up, my body feeling as limp as water-soaked cotton.

“It’s a very good trick. Is it really this poor treatment that you receive in the end after fighting so hard on the battlefield?”

I looked around at the rude voice I couldn’t normally hear. However, there was no being seen that could make such a sound of its own volition, and the only being that could make a sound on its own was a crow trapped in a cage.

“Are you the one who spoke?”

“Yes, it’s me. Were you very surprised when the crow said that?”

“… No. I just think that there are birds like that too.”

“No, usually crows can’t talk? Isn’t it natural to be surprised? Are there any new reactions?”

“Should we be surprised by a talking crow when there are so many humans who speak words that don’t sound like words? My life was filled with more rare sights than that.”

From poisonous dragons to man-eating giants. My eyes will be full of things that others will never see in their lives.

“… It’s a bit weird for me to say this, but are you crazy?”

“That depends on how you set the standard. If you look at it the way you want, is there a person in the world who isn’t crazy?”

“I’m not talking about philosophy. I’m asking why on earth I’m being treated like this.”

    “Hmm… ”

It was bothersome to explain the entire long story, and I thought it would take time, so I condensed it as short as possible.

“It’s probably because I didn’t include personal feelings in the weighing.”

    “… What?”

“In short, it would be because I was an unemotional person.”

The crow looked at me like it was looking at an insect.

“… Well, there’s no need to have a useless conversation. I’ll mind my business, so you can do yours too.”

I ignored what the crow was saying and started looking at my backlog of work again. Once I ignored it, it was like human language or the cries of crows.

One of my few talents was concentration, and thanks to that talent I was able to work for over two hours while ignoring the cries of crows.

Other people would have found the talking crow so fascinating that they would have played with it for hours. But unfortunately, I wasn’t that leisurely enough, and above all, I wasn’t pure enough to be interested in such things.

    “…, matriarch.”

    “Ah.”

Was it because I was too focused? I was so engrossed that I even forgot that my butler had arrived.

    “What’s going on?”

“It was almost time for lunch, so I came up… ”

“Let’s go down. But didn’t you hear that crow crying over there?”

“Yes… ? I’m sure you heard some cackling just a moment ago, but is there anything strange?”

    “No. It’s nothing.”

It seems that only I could hear the words the crow was saying. To anyone other than me, does it just sound like simple cackling?

Otherwise, the words would only be heard by someone who met certain conditions, and I seemed to have satisfied those conditions without even realizing it.

Well, honestly, that kind of thing is okay now.

“What about your mother and Liesel?”

“Everyone is enjoying their meal at the restaurant first. I tried telling him to wait until the matriarch comes… that… As you know… ”

“There is no need for you to make any more excuses, so go away.”

Immediately after the butler left, the crow, who heard the whole story, became angry again.

“No, I’m doing my job, so what’s the point of you attacking me first without even waiting for me? Damn! There are people who make money and there are people who make money! It’s not a fucking beast to eat food first without even waiting for your family!!!”

“If you look at it broadly, not only my mother and younger brother, but I too would be considered an animal. If you look at it from that perspective, what you’re saying may be correct.”

“No, do you really have a disease that prevents you from understanding people’s speech? ?”

“But, if the expression “beast” was an insult, I would raise a counterargument. It’s not that the two of them couldn’t overcome their hunger, it’s that they do it because they hate me.”

“Ha… Fuck my god. What should I do with these helpless bastards?”

It wasn’t that surprising to hear the words, but it was quite surprising at least for the crow to find God. Of all the extraterrestrial beings I’ve seen, most of them hated God.

But my impressions stopped there. A mere crow could not build a nest in my heart, which was no different from Muju Gongsan. Very brief interest. That was it.

And I wasn’t so stupid or clueless that I didn’t know why this crow was angry.

“… If you’re doing this because you’re hungry, I’ll fill you up later. ”

“Seriously, I think I hate you as much as your family right now.”

“You must be very hungry. At best, I can’t believe I hate people that much because of Moi.”

“…… I’m asking this seriously, but has there been any serious illness in your family?”

“I’m not sure. If I had to be honest, the fact that I’m alive may be a misfortune.”

The crow seemed to be at a loss for words, and after gaining silence, I was finally able to head to the restaurant downstairs.

Usually, I prepare meals in the office, but today was a day when the butler decided to prepare a table for my family. Even though they started eating first, I didn’t feel particularly upset.

I wasn’t young enough to be that upset, and when I got angry, I was already so used to being treated like this, so it felt too new.

    “Deacon. What’s today’s menu?”

“Yes, today I especially prepared mushroom soup and duck meat, which the head of the household likes. I told the chef not to touch anything that the head of the household cannot eat, so you don’t have to worry.”

    “… Thank you.”

There were limits to the foods I could eat, so I had to be somewhat careful.

When I reached the restaurant with my butler, I saw my mother and sister enjoying their meal.

    “Are you at peace, Mother?”

    “… I was eating first.”

As always, he didn’t give me a proper reply to my greeting.

“I was late because I had a lot of backlogged work.”

Now that she has remained silent, it was a motherly response.

    “…”

The only thing that was questionable was that the mushroom soup and duck meat that the butler had mentioned had disappeared somewhere, and onion soup and pork were steaming on the table.

Of course, the butler who saw that was so angry that he called the chef with a bright red face.

“Are you crazy! Since the head of the family can’t eat pork and onions, I ordered mushrooms and duck… !”

“I ordered the menu to be changed, butler.”

The one who broke the silence was my mother, who had consistently remained silent in response to my words.

    “Is there some problem?”

    “… No, ma’am.”

“Indeed. It looks like that’s what you wanted to eat.”

Whether or not you knew that I can’t eat pork and onions, it’s probably a good thing now. Either way, it would be far from affection.

“… I guess I was the uninvited guest.”

    “…”

    “Are you silent again?”

I wasn’t particularly angry. I am now used to my mother’s silence, and soon I will no longer feel anything special about that silence.

I picked up a piece of bread that was lying on my seat.

“For me, one piece of bread is enough. So, I hope you have a pleasant meal.”

“… Is that all you want to say?”

    “Yes.”

“Then I recommend going out soon.”

    “… See you again.”

Because I’m not stupid enough to waste time by saying something new in a conversation that would otherwise be silent.

Now, these scenes were so familiar to me that I didn’t notice anything. To the point where I felt strange trying to feel emotions in this landscape again.

“What the fuck? It’s not enough to just leave your son alone and eat, so you even kick him out like that? Is that family? How can your family do that unless they actually mix drugs with their food and eat it?”

As soon as the talking crow heard the whole story, he cursed my family, even using curse words he had never heard before.

Of course, I was not immature enough to feel emotional about such abusive language.

All I could think was, ‘This crow is thinking this.’

When someone hates me or when someone hates my mother and sister, they are just expressing their feelings. I just didn’t feel the need to get angry about something like that.

    I was born that way.
