Mesugaki Tank Enters the Academy –
201
It wasn’t hard to guess why
the number had increased.
What could that damned
perverted Armadi want?
It was obvious he wanted to
create a black mark on my history, making me writhe in shame. He also
wanted to enjoy watching me in a flashy dress.
Could God’s actions here
have a deeper meaning?
Would he?
God does this kind of nonsense
and you think he has deeper intentions?
Ugh. So annoying.
It’s not like I was taking the
quest lightly.
To get the Bracelet of Play, I
even went to the Auction House dressed in a Gothic Lolita outfit.
And I haven’t even cleared the
quest with that. I accomplished only 4 of the requirements.
I’ve been trying to fill the
rest using my barely recovering body and my luck!
And now, just because it seems
like I might clear the quest without much trouble, you go and
increase the numbers?!
You sloppy god! Do you have
any conscience?!
As a god, shouldn’t you hide
your sinister intentions and at least try to look cool?
Why are you trying to take
away the tiny bit of faith I have left?
Did you want me to insult you
like this?!
Could that be part of your
plan too? Trying to achieve three goals at once? You sloppy god!
Haaa.
Calm down. Cursing at the
sloppy god won’t change anything. That guy enjoys being cursed.
Instead of fueling the twisted desires of the Sloppy God, it’s better
to think about what’s ahead.
I let out a long sigh
internally and turned my gaze back to the quest.
The changes to the quest text
weren’t limited to the numbers. There were other modifications below
that.
[Reward: Significant
reputation gain, ???]
[Failure: Attend a party in
Lucy’s old outfit, ???]
The first thing that caught my
eye was the word significant added to the reputation gain.
Although I wasn’t sure how
that would work, it was clear that the reward had increased compared
to before.
And the question marks added
to both the reward and the punishment.
From my past experiences, this
indicates some additional conditions.
So, the quest has become
harder to clear, and both the reward and the punishment have been
upgraded.
Punishment, huh.
What could those question
marks mean?
At least it won’t be as
extreme as a game over.
They usually mark serious
things clearly.
While pondering this, I
suddenly recalled one of my past quests.
Something humiliating I saw
when I went to visit the Perverted Fox.
If that came out as a penalty,
it means the quest can force certain actions as a punishment.
At that moment, countless
thoughts raced through my mind.
The party held during this
Partan Festival is going to be quite grand.
It’s a party hosted by the
Duke’s Family to commemorate the festival. You can expect all the
influential nobles to gather. Even if the First Prince, who has been
in seclusion in the Capital City, hadn’t appeared, it would still be
on a massive scale.
What if I cause some trouble
in the midst of it? The rumours would spread across the entire
Continent in an instant.
Bad rumours would circulate,
my reputation would drop, and my embarrassing history would be
exposed.
…No. Let’s not imagine such
things.
Let’s think positively.
After all, if I clear the
quest, the reward will only increase, right?
Even though Armadi is a
perverted freak with strange fetishes, he does give proper rewards.
There must be something useful
for me hidden in those question marks.
So, in the end, what I have to
do hasn’t changed.
Clear the quest.
Seize the top spot in this
festival.
Crush Armadi’s antics.
I don’t know why it’s Armadi
making trouble and not the Evil God, but anyway.
Let’s think about this.
So far, I have won at five
street stalls. That means I need to win nine more times.
According to my calculations,
there are 12 street stalls I haven’t challenged yet, leaving me with
only three chances to fail.
For challenges purely based on
luck, I can use the Bracelet of Play. For those requiring memory or
knowledge, I can rely on Grandpa’s help. But for the physical
challenges, I have to handle them myself.
With my current, miserable
physical condition, at that.
The silver lining is that I’ve
already tackled the tasks I thought I couldn’t handle.
Now, what remains are
challenges I’m relatively confident about.
If my body were in normal
condition, I could somehow overcome them.
Alright. Let’s not think about
what comes next.
The immediate problem is
what’s important.
Armadi’s antics may pose
question marks, but failure is not an option.
I’ll deal with future problems
when they arise.
With that resolve, I stood up
quickly.
“Lucy Allen?”
“Lady Allen?”
‘I’ll go ahead.’
“The food here is a bit too
sloppy for my taste. I’ll go ahead.”
“Huh?”
“My Lady?!”
Leaving the two stunned, I
headed outside to find someone.
Someone who had been invited
to the Partan Festival and had no other plans during this vacation
period, so she must be around here somewhere.
Finding her wasn’t too
difficult.
She draws everyone’s
attention, but for different reasons than me. Following the crowd’s
concentration, I naturally found her.
Pushing through the dense
crowd that naturally gathered around her, it wasn’t long before I
found Phoebe with the Church members, spreading her charm in the
middle of the crowd.
As I approached, the path
cleared, and Phoebe noticed my presence.
Though our eyes met just
briefly, her expression changed noticeably.
She slightly lifted her eyes
and then flashed a bright smile.
Her smile was so captivating
that anyone seeing it up close would think it was directed at them.
Realising it wasn’t, they’d involuntarily feel a twinge of
jealousy and disappointment.
“Please wait a moment.”
As I tried to follow Phoebe’s
smile, a knight stepped in front of me, blocking my way.
His stern face showed a hint
of bewilderment, but his loyalty to the Saint kept him firm in front
of me.
“Sir Knight, it’s
alright.”
“But, Saint…”
“Lady Allen is my friend
from the Academy.”
However, his loyalty quickly
yielded to the smile of the one he wished to protect.
With a gentle nudge from
Phoebe, the knightly barrier broke.
“It’s been a while, Lady
Allen.”
‘Same here, Phoebe.’
“Yes, good to see you,
Sloppy Saint.”
At those words, the
expressions of the surrounding clerics and the onlookers who came to
see the Saint turned to shock.
Fortunately, Phoebe didn’t
seem offended by it; had she shown even a slight disapproval,
criticisms would’ve erupted from the crowd behind us.
Even now, many looked like
they had a lot to say, their lips moving as if to speak but holding
back.
“I see you came early to
enjoy the festival. If I’d known, I would’ve come sooner myself.”
Maybe it was because it had
been a long time since we last met.
Phoebe looked like she had a
lot to discuss.
Normally, I would’ve enjoyed a
conversation with her, but not now. I had more urgent matters to
attend to.
Blocking out surrounding noise
with the ring Alsatine gave me and at the same time, I spoke up.
‘Phoebe, I need to ask you
something.’
“Sloppy Saint, there’s
something even you can do for me.”
Though it was rather abrupt,
Phoebe did not question it.
“What should I do?”
“Give me a buff.”
What should one do if they
lack physical abilities?
Just fill in the gaps.
To a level comparable to, or
perhaps even surpassing, my normal condition.
“What kind would you like?”
‘So…’
“Well, first…”
Even though I could use divine
magic myself, I sought out Phoebe because her divine magic was more
effective, and because Phoebe could use almost all types of buff
skills.
My body, still recovering, was
a mess.
Even doping with various
potions wasn’t something my body could handle right now.
So, my plan was to use
Phoebe’s buff as a foundation and then dope my body to maximise my
stats to the highest possible level currently attainable.
Conquering the street stalls
would be easier than any game as long as I have the stats.
In a game, I might have to
rely on pure skill, but this time I can use all the skills at my
disposal.
“Lady Allen, too many buffs
can become poisonous. In the end, it’s your body that has to handle
them.”
Listening to my request,
Phoebe advised with concern.
She was right. Excessive buffs
can lead to penalties later on.
Look at my body, ruined after
performing a miracle.
While it might be enjoyable to
have excellent specs for a moment, the aftereffects when the buff
ends will be as severe as the buff was powerful.
I am aware of this. There were
certainly penalties for it in the game as well.
Even knowing this, I plan to
dope myself.
I have no idea how many days
I’ll be bedridden, but for now, I need to solve the immediate
problem.
To crush Armadi’s sly
manoeuvres.
And for my dignity!
‘It’s something that needs
to be done.’
“Stop saying useless
things and just give me the buff, Sloppy Saint. It has to be done.”
After hearing my words, Phoebe
hesitated for a moment but then clasped her hands together and began
to pray.
The buff that started from her
blessing wrapped around my body, making my heavy body feel light.
“Don’t overdo it.”
‘I’ll try my best.’
“Who’s worrying about
whom? I’m not so weak that I need to be worried about by a sloppy
person like you.”
“And if you end up in
pain later, call me. That’s my specialty.”
That’s rather tempting.
I might consider it if I
become a sickly Mesugaki girl.
After exchanging farewells
with Phoebe, I immediately opened my inventory.
In addition to what I had
stored over the years, there were now numerous potions that Karia had
managed to procure from the Georg Family, but there were only a few
that I needed to use.
Enhancement of physical
abilities. Increase in vitality. Awakening effects. And a few
additional combinations to minimise the penalties.
Indeed, I’ve done it countless
times. I’ve worked so hard to achieve maximum efficiency.
Though, in the end, I had to
discard my own efforts because someone else’s research turned out
to be more efficient.
Grandpa remarked as he watched
me drink the potions.
Yeah, I suppose so. Even
though I tried my best to reduce the penalties, there are limits.
‘It’s orders from above.’
After finishing the doping
process, I headed straight to the street stall where the competition
would begin.
The theme of this place was
strength.
The goal was to smash a board
that had undergone both physical and magical hardening with a wooden
hammer almost as tall as I am.
I received the wooden hammer
from the street vendor and took a deep breath, lifting it up.
I could hear the murmurs from
the crowd around me.
“Oh, she lifted it.”
“How can that little body
have so much strength?”
“As expected of the Allen
Family.”
“It’s impossible. Even
Mr. Magger failed to break it, so there’s no way a girl like her can
do it.”
“Her stance is good, but
it’s still tough with those thin arms.”
I ignored them.
There was a voice within me
that I trusted more than theirs.
Throughout the vacation
period, I had practised handling divine energy hundreds, no,
thousands of times.
Right now, all I had to do was
add one more to that countless number.
Failure wasn’t an option.
As the hammer imbued with
divine energy descended, the board split in half, shattering the
murmurs of the crowd.
Great.
In my current state, I can do
it.
I can succeed in this quest.
Just you wait, Armadi.
I’m coming to see just how
extraordinary the reward you’ve prepared is.
