Mesugaki Tank Enters the Academy –
    53

    “Miss, you should do it
    more slowly and gently.”

    ‘I am doing that.’

    “Sloppy maid! I’m already
    doing it that way.”

    “No, not like that. Like
    this.”

    ‘I don’t get it.’

    “Can’t you explain without
sounding like an idiot? Do it properly.”

    “Wait. Uhm, so…”

    The personal maid was showing
me how to tidy my hair while we both looked in the mirror, but my
    hands were still clumsy.

    Trying to do something I
always left to the maid was proving more difficult than I imagined.

Why on earth is there a rule
that says everyone must be treated equally regardless of rank at the
Academy, so you can’t have servants?

Anyone with half a brain would
know that’s an impossible rule to uphold!

In the end, once you graduate
from the Academy, you’re back to living under the class system. Who
in their right mind would argue for equality?

If it weren’t for that rule,
I wouldn’t have to brush my hair myself.

    Damn it.

    Even though I was grumbling
    internally, the reality didn’t change.

    Under the maid’s grumbling
instructions, I moved my hands as she directed, eventually managing
    to create a passable hairstyle.

I thought it was good enough,
but from the look on the maid’s face, she seemed to disagree.

    What more could there be?
Isn’t this exactly how I normally look?

    While I waited silently for
the maid to say something, she slowly nodded her head.

    “This should be enough.”

    ‘Right?’

“How do you like it? Much
better than if that sloppy maid had done it, right?”

    “Of course, Miss.”

Over the past few months, even
the maid had changed a lot.

When I first met her, she used
to tremble just at the thought of touching my hair, but now, little
    fazes her.

I wonder how Lucy managed to
scare her to the point of perfection.

    “Are you done, Miss?”

When I finished tidying up and
stepped out of the dorm, Karl was waiting for us at the entrance.

I had told him before to stop
standing guard in front of my door because it was creepy, so now he
had taken guard at the entrance.

Does his idea of the ideal
    knight entail stalking his master?

    I considered giving him a
piece of my mind, but I realised he would just laugh it off no matter
what I said, so I let out a sigh of irritation instead.

    “Shall we go? Everyone else
    is moving.”

    ‘Yes, let’s go.’

    “I know, Sloppy Knight.
    Don’t rush me.”

As Karl and I started to walk,
the maid remained standing in place.

    I turned my head, wondering
what she was doing, and saw her grasping the edges of her skirt and
    bowing her head.

    “Have a safe trip, Miss
Lucy. I will be waiting for your return at the mansion.”

    Is this the farewell?

    We’ll see each other again
in a few months anyway, so why make such a fuss? I turned my entire
body to stand in front of the maid.

    ‘I’ll be back. Erin.’

    “I’m off. Sloppy Erin, wait
    for me.”

    “Sniff…Yes,
    Miss.”

    The entrance to the Academy
    was teeming with people.

    Last time, it was just
students and their attendants, so it wasn’t too bad, but this time,
there were even parents, making it seem impossible to get through the
    crowd.

    However, this worry was
    unfounded.

    As I walked toward the
entrance of the Academy, people made way for me on their own.

    Seeing people part like the
Red Sea, as if a giant cockroach had appeared, I couldn’t help but
    chuckle.

    Right. I had forgotten, being
cooped up in the mansion for the past few months, but this was how
    people originally treated me.

    Receiving stares that were a
mix of fear and discomfort, I let out a sigh.

No matter how I think about
it, Lucy has caused far too many problems in too many places.

    If Lucy had confined her
antics just to the mansion, I wouldn’t be this avoided.

    Is it even possible to
    overturn this reputation?

At this point, it seems it
would just be easier to quietly accept it.

    ‘Grandfather, would it even
be possible to be positive in this situation?’

    Grandpa started talking about
    his days as a hero.

When he and his comrades moved
around, crowds would gather just to see them, making it almost
    impossible for them to move.

    After accidents happened
because of these crowds, he had to hide his identity as much as
    possible.

    Having a good reputation comes
    with its own hardships.

    Indeed, moderation is best in
    everything.

    With such thoughts, I walked
    down the open path.

    Yes, it’s better than being
    swarmed by people.

As Karl and I tried to enter
the Academy, the gatekeeper stopped us.

    “I’m sorry, Lady Allen. You
can’t bring a servant with you.”

    ‘Karl is…’

    “This sloppy one isn’t
    coming in as my servant.”

    “Pardon? Then…”

‘He’s going to work at the
    Academy.’

    “He’s here to work. Really,
are you such a sloppy gatekeeper that you don’t even know that?”

    Although, it was practically
    in name only.

Karl, a knight of the Allen
Family, managed to get a job at Soul Academy due to the significant
    influence in the last incident.

    During the Academy’s entrance
exam when the incident occurred, Benedict sent a serious complaint to
    the Academy.

    In response, the Academy
apologised and offered some form of compensation, but Benedict
    rejected all their proposals.

    Then he said: “We don’t
need such compensation, but instead, allow one of our knights to
    enter the Academy.”

    This was a blatant expression
of mistrust, essentially saying, “We can’t trust you, so we’ll
send a knight to protect my daughter.”

    The Academy did not refute
this proposition. Given that the incident during the entrance exam
was entirely their fault and considering Benedict’s status, this
request was relatively easy to comply with.

    However, the Academy had a
strict rule against allowing servants, so they couldn’t just let Karl
    in unconditionally.

    Thus, the method proposed by
    the Academy was employment.

    This was the maximum
concession the Academy could offer, and Benedict accepted the
    proposal without much comment.

In this way, Karl became a
professor at the Academy through the backdoor.

    This situation was also
advantageous for me, as it meant I would have someone absolutely on
    my side within the Academy.

    I doubted that he’d stand
guard in front of my dorm room here… surely not, right?

When Karl pulled out a letter
from his pocket and showed it to the gatekeeper, the gatekeeper was
    flustered and saluted Karl.

“So you came here as a
    professor! Please, go right in!”

    After entering Soul Academy
with Karl, I parted ways with him and headed to the location where
the entrance ceremony was being held.

    Karl, who had been appointed
as a newly-employed professor here, had plenty of tasks to attend to,
    unlike me, a student.

    The path to the entrance
    ceremony venue was pleasantly open.

    Even when there were parents,
the path naturally cleared for me, so it was even more pronounced
    when only students were around.

    “Lady Allen.”

    Ah, making friends here is
    going to be tough!

Just as I was lamenting my
fate of likely becoming a loner at the Academy, someone called my
    name.

    ‘Joy.’

    “Airhead Lady. It’s been a
    while.”

    It was Joy.

    Wearing the Soul Academy
uniform, she looked less intimidating than when she wore her usual
    black dress.

    Of course, that’s only a
relative comparison; she still looked every bit like a Villainous
    Lady.

The expression on my face must
have shown my disdain for being called “Airhead Lady,” and
her gaze felt like it could kill.

    “Could you please just call
me by my name instead of Airhead Lady?”

    Joy asked, tired of being
called Airhead Lady, but that was impossible.

I was already calling her by
    her name in my mind.

    Unless my [Mesugaki] skill
allowed it, I couldn’t call her by her name out loud.

    ‘Sorry.’

    “Why should I? Airhead
    Lady.”

    “…Ha. Do as you please.
You won’t be able to for much longer anyway.”

    It seems Joy still doesn’t
know that I was offered to be the freshman representative?

    I wonder what expression
she’ll make when she sees my name at the top later on.

In the game, Joy’s face was
priceless whenever she was caught off guard by my antics. I’m quite
looking forward to seeing that in real life.

    “But Lady Allen.”

    ‘Yes?’

    “What is it?”

    “Thank you for last time.
You saved my life. I will definitely repay this debt one day.”

Joy said this with a bow, and
then returned to what looked like her group.

Oh. I didn’t expect to receive
thanks again in such a public place.

    ‘It seems so.’

I only cleaned up my own mess,
but getting a thank you for it felt odd.

    Just maybe…

    Seeing how grateful she was,
could it be possible that if I behave well from now on, I might
    become friends with Joy?

Perhaps my life at the Academy
    won’t be entirely bleak!

With such thoughts in mind, I
felt grounded back in reality as I moved towards the entrance
    ceremony.

    Everyone around me, assigned
to seats near me, recoiled at the sight of my face as if they had
    seen something they shouldn’t have.

    They wouldn’t be this scared
even if Benedict were about to punch them.

    Seeing the students so
terrified and cautious of me made me feel sorry for them.

    Sorry, unlucky souls.

    Contrary to your worries, I’m
a harmless person, so the things you fear won’t happen.

Just think of it as one of
life’s many quirks and please bear with me.

Anyway, if I keep my mouth
shut, you’ll see I just look like a cute young lady, right? Enjoy
    the view.

    As time passed, people began
to gather at the entrance ceremony venue.

    Among them were many
    characters I was familiar with.

    Frey Kent, the future Sword
    Saint.

    Toby, who was accepted into
the Academy solely through his martial talents despite being a
    commoner.

    Among all the Saints in
history, Phoebe was said to possess the greatest talent.

When she saw me from afar, she
gave me a nod of greeting.

    As expected of a Saint!
Despite being called sloppy, she was the first to offer a greeting!

If it wasn’t for the confusion
caused by Armadi last time, we could have had a longer conversation.

    What a shame.

    And there was the Third
Prince, Arthur Soladin, often called the pitiful prince by users…

Huh? Why is that person here?

    Since I refused the
representative spot, shouldn’t he be the one to take it?

    “Now, we will begin the
    Academy entrance ceremony. Students, please…”

As I was pondering this, the
entrance ceremony began with Vice Principal Molly stepping onto the
    stage.

The person who took on the
role of freshman representative was the Inferior Duke, Jack Burrow.

Could it be that he was happy
    about becoming the freshman representative?

    With a triumphant expression,
he began reading the speech he had prepared.

    He had considerable talent
overall, but he was always outshone by the pitiful prince in
intellect and by Frey and Toby in martial prowess, so he could never
    be the best.

Why is such a man, destined
never to be first in his life, standing there?

    It’s strange. There’s no way
he could have beaten the pitiful prince.

In the game, he was always
getting beaten up and whining. That was his pattern. Why else would
he have the nickname Inferior Duke?

    I really don’t understand the
    true reason.

What on earth is happening at
    Soul Academy in this world?

Seeing that guy with a happy
expression, when he used to always shout “Next time, I’ll win
for sure!” with bloodshot eyes, I felt a bit strange.

Yeah. You deserve to be happy
    at least once.

    After his speech, Judy Alber
    went up to the stage.

Her coming up means the time
    has come.

I grasped the mace I had kept
    miniaturised.

    ‘It’s about time it showed
    up.’

    “Ahhhhhh!”

    Just as Grandpa asked, a
    scream echoed from behind.

    The ground was shaking.

When I turned my gaze in that
direction, I saw a monster emerging from a hole in the ground.

    Here it comes. The classic
    Academy catastrophe.

    Of course, the Academy
    entrance ceremony can’t end quietly.

    I passed through the murmuring
crowd, enlarging my mace, and conjured a shield with divine magic.

    Alright, shall we go?

    It’s time to improve my
reputation with some proper tanking actions.
