Mesugaki Tank Enters the Academy –
51
The individuals gathered in
the meeting room of the Soul Academy all looked utterly exhausted.
The problem was that the
admission test had to be halted due to an incident that occurred
during the process.
Ever since that day, all the
professors at the Academy had been working tirelessly day and night
for nearly two weeks to address the situation.
To put it into words, their
ordeal could fill an entire novel, but after these two gruelling
weeks, the professors finally managed to complete the exam.
Now, all that remained was to
finalise the selection of the special admission candidates.
The professors in the meeting
room, each boasting the length of their sunken eyes, were all equally
desperate to conclude the matter quickly.
Among them, the head of the
Academy, Judy Alber, coughed weakly and spoke in a voice that sounded
nearly lifeless.
“The next candidate for
discussion is Lady Lucy Allen of the Allen Family. She was one of the
victims involved in the recent incident and is already well-known, so
I believe everyone knows of her. Professor Luca, could you tell us
why you recommended her?”
“Yes, of course.”
Luca, who rose from his seat,
looked around the room with bloodshot eyes and began to speak.
“The reason I wish to
recommend Lady Lucy Allen for special admission is…”
Everything he said was what
everyone had anticipated.
How she had outperformed Lady
Meryl of the Baines Family.
How she demonstrated
outstanding leadership in navigating the admission test dungeon.
How she saved all her party
members during the unforeseen crisis caused by Agra’s Curse.
“If someone with such
achievements is not made a special admission candidate, then who
could possibly be?”
None of the other professors
disputed Luca’s fervent words, despite his hoarse voice.
They were all thinking the
same thing.
Though it was true that Lucy
Allen had caused a lot of trouble in the past, that was nothing more
than history.
What she had demonstrated now
was more than enough to elevate her to the ranks of a future saint.
“While it is true that Lady
Allen has demonstrated remarkable achievements worthy of special
admission status…”
However, someone raised an
objection.
It was Molly, the vice
principal of Soul Academy.
Despite Luca’s sharp gaze, she
expressed her opinion as if it was no big deal.
“It should be noted that the
special admission system is intended for those who didn’t pass the
entrance exam but showed exceptional skills in practical
evaluations.”
“I understand that, Vice
Principal. Which is why Lady Allen is a perfect fit for this!”
It was well-known that Lucy
Allen was not good at academics.
According to her former
tutors, she supposedly lacked the will to study entirely.
Even if she had turned over a
new leaf, it was almost impossible for her to excel in the entrance
exam of Soul Academy after only a year of studying.
The combat studies professors
nodded in agreement with Luca, but others felt differently.
The theory professors all had
peculiar expressions on their faces.
“No, Lady Allen achieved
scores high enough to pass without needing special admission.”
Molly resolved the doubts
creeping in among the combat studies professors.
By presenting the incredible
claim that Lucy Allen had achieved outstanding academic results.
“What?”
Luca blinked in surprise, and
a language professor in the meeting room raised his hand.
“Lady Allen scored 87 points
in Korean. That’s a score high enough to place her in the upper
tier.”
Following that, a history
professor spoke up.
“She scored 98 in history.
She only made a mistake on a modern events question which was meant
to be easy.”
“Her magic studies score is
relatively low. It’s 68 points, barely enough to meet the average.”
Finally, a dungeon studies
professor spoke up with a sigh.
“The professors are still
discussing how to grade the Dungeon Studies score.”
“Why is that?”
“Because a score of 100
wouldn’t be enough.”
At this, the Dungeon Studies
professor shared one of Lucy’s responses from the test.
“First, let me give you
the context of the question. It was a descriptive question about how
to deal with a horde of undead.
When dealing with brain-dead
trash undead, you have to be cautious because, although they’re
sloppy, they’re persistent like insects.”
“Wait. Hold on a moment.”
One of the Combat Studies
professors interrupted as soon as the first sentence was read out
loud.
“Is that really what Lady
Allen wrote?”
“Yes, I’m reading it
verbatim. Why would I use vulgar terms like ‘trash’ and ‘sloppy’ if
they weren’t her exact words?”
“…I apologise. Please
continue.”
While her answer was filled
with excessive slang, once those were removed, it was actually quite
well-written.
It included things to be
cautious of when dealing with undead, how to respond to unexpected
variables, and the best strategies for clearing a dungeon filled with
undead.
Lucy’s answer was so
accurate that it could have been given by someone with firsthand
experience in dungeon raids, deserving a perfect score.
However, that wasn’t all.
Nothing particularly unusual so far.
“This is the crucial
part.
Undead are so lacking in
intelligence that without a commanding entity, they’re just a
worthless mob, no better than a swarm of locusts. Even the most
foolish dungeon master knows this, so they usually place a commanding
entity among the undead horde.
…A high-level undead
commander doesn’t rely solely on its own eyes to lead. It selects a
few trash minions to relay battlefield information back to it, which
it uses to issue commands.
In other words, if you take
out these information messengers first, you can turn the commanding
entity into an ignorant fool who has no idea what’s happening on
the battlefield. To find this…”
As the Dungeon Studies
professor concluded his story, a silence settled over the meeting
room.
The content was challenging
their established knowledge.
“Is this really Lady Allen’s
idea?”
Luca’s bloodshot eyes showed
determination.
For a single student to come
up with such an innovative idea was remarkable.
“Yes. Hard to believe, but
it’s true.”
“Impressive. If what Lady
Allen wrote is accurate, dealing with undead will become much
easier.”
It’s common knowledge that
you must eliminate the commanding entity when facing a horde of
undead.
The moment the command is
gone, the undead horde becomes a disorganised mess.
However, adhering to this
principle is extremely difficult.
High-level undead possess
intelligence superior to that of ordinary humans.
They understand the
implications of their own death.
Thus, high-level undead never
reveal themselves on the front lines.
Attacking the hidden
commanding entity is practically impossible, making the strategy of
targeting the commander purely theoretical.
But if we use Lucy’s method,
the situation changes.
It provides a means to disrupt
the command without hunting down the commander.
“There are many other
radical ideas written on Lady Allen’s test paper that are far too
extreme for a noble lady with no dungeon raid experience.”
“This isn’t the end?”
“Yes. That’s why I said a
score of 100 wouldn’t be enough.”
As the once-quiet meeting room
grew increasingly noisy, Molly quieted it down with a cough.
“By now, it should be clear,
Professor Luca. Lady Allen is not just a special admission case.”
“I understand.”
Lucy Allen had achieved top
scores in the written exam and performed exceptionally well in the
practicals. She was practically already accepted into the Soul
Academy.
“At this point, it’s not
about passing. We should be curious about her overall ranking.”
Luca said this while taking
his seat.
“Let’s begin, Miss.”
‘I’m ready.’
“Bring it on, Sloppy.”
As soon as I assumed my
stance, Karl swung his sword.
The speed was already beyond
what my eyes could follow, but it didn’t matter.
I had the [Iron Wall] skill.
Following the skill’s prompts,
I raised my shield, and the sword immediately clashed against it.
I felt my arm go numb from
blocking the sword.
He’s been really merciless
lately.
What if he ends up scarring
the face of the master he serves?!
As I gritted my teeth and
withstood Karl’s attacks, Grandpa spoke up.
The moment I heard his voice,
I began reciting a prayer in my mind.
‘As the deity Armadi takes
great care of Elliott, the demon’s attacks could not reach him.’
Then, the divine power that
emerged from within me formed a holy barrier in front of me.
Karl frowned at the sight but
couldn’t retract his already swung sword.
The sword bounced off the
barrier, creating an opening.
Without a moment’s hesitation,
I dashed beyond the barrier and swung my mace.
Perhaps thinking it was too
late to redirect the sword in time, Karl opted to evade my attack
with a movement instead of countering it. His eyes were tracking my
movements.
‘When the world was about to
be engulfed in darkness, all the gods gathered and cried out for
light, and from the heavens, a ray of light descended.’
As I recited the prayer
inwardly, I closed my eyes.
No sooner had my eyelids shut,
a brilliant light burst forth, bright enough to be felt through my
skin. When I opened my eyes again, I saw Karl hesitating and stepping
back, momentarily blinded by the flash.
Great!
Seeing that Karl was affected
by the light, I deliberately exaggerated my movements.
Even if Karl was in a state of
confusion, he would still sense such blatant signals.
It was so obvious that Karl
would have no choice but to suspect it was a trap.
My ploy worked perfectly.
Even though I raised my mace,
Karl didn’t move.
This is my chance.
It’s finally my chance to
strike back at the knight who had tormented his master without
knowing his place!
The moment I brought down my
mace with all my might, Karl moved his hand.
Clang!
Just as I thought I had swung
my mace, it bounced back, and the [Iron Wall] skill warned me of
danger.
But it was already too late to
respond.
I stared wide-eyed, bracing
myself for the incoming attack.
However, Karl’s sword didn’t
touch me.
As I looked at the sword,
which had stopped just before reaching me, Karl withdrew his weapon.
“Well done, Miss. I
really thought it was dangerous this time.”
‘Don’t lie.’
“Sloppy. Do I look like a
fool who’d fall for empty words?”
“I am sincere, Miss!”
No matter what I said, I
couldn’t trust the knight who would nod at everything I uttered.
‘Sorry.’
‘Yes!’
With Grandpa’s reprimand in my
ears, I adjusted my stance once more.
Karl, standing opposite me,
also raised his sword.
“Miss!”
Just then, a maid came running
from afar, calling my name.
I lowered my weapon and waited
to see what was happening. The maid handed me a letter.
‘What is this?’
“Sloppy maid. What is
this?”
“It’s a letter from Soul
Academy!”
Soul Academy?
There could only be one reason
for them to send a letter.
An acceptance notification.
So, this single letter decides
my fate?
Taking a deep breath, I tore
open the envelope and checked its contents.
And upon reading what was
inside, I stood there, frozen.
“Miss. What does it say?”
‘Uh, well, I did get
accepted…’
“So, I got accepted, but
why on earth is this sloppy Academy asking me to give the freshman
welcome speech?”
