Chapter Index

    A brief silence fell.

Seojin, unsure what expression to wear, unconsciously tugged at the hem of her t-shirt.

But the woman simply gazed at Seojin with a placid, unreadable expression before smiling once more.

    “Excuse me,”

The woman’s eyes curved into half-moons.

“Could you get me a glass of water?”

Her tone was polite, yet it sounded less like a request and more like an expectation.

    “Ah, yes…”

Seojin answered reflexively and turned toward the kitchen. Her mind was a mess, but her hands were already reaching for a cup.

Though there were clean cups on the drying rack, she needlessly took a new one from the cabinet. The cool touch of the glass as water from the dispenser chilled her hand seemed to reflect her own churning heart.

She lifted her head slightly and glanced toward the living room.

The woman was sitting on the sofa, remote in hand, and with the press of a button, the room’s temperature dropped.

    “Whew.”

The woman, who was clearly familiar with the space, had the natural air of an owner despite requesting water like a guest. Seojin turned back, holding the cup in both hands.

She hesitated for a long moment, watching the woman’s back, before finally holding out the glass.

    “Here you go…”

    “Thank you.”

As she took the cup, her fingers brushed lightly against Seojin’s, and she smiled.

That smile was different from the praise or playful teasing Seojin had only ever received from Rio. It was light, gentle, and seemed to hold no hidden meaning… which made it all the more uncomfortable.

Still standing near the sofa, Seojin watched the woman sip her water while looking at her phone, and the feeling that she shouldn’t be here surged through her.

But if someone had to leave for that reason… it felt like it should be her.

    “Is Rio out?”

“Ah, yes. He’s at, um, the office…”

Lost in her own thoughts, Seojin was startled by the question. She clasped her hands behind her back as if to hide them and nodded.

The words had barely left her mouth when—

    “—Cough.”

The woman choked on her water for a second, then burst out laughing.

    He’s at the office?”

She laughed, her mouth wide and bright, until it seemed to hurt. She pressed the corners of her lips as if trying to stop, but her eyes were still crinkled in amusement.

    “Ah, seriously… I can’t believe I missed such a fun sight.”

She lifted the phone in her hand, turned the screen back on, and pressed the call button without hesitation.

It seemed he picked up after just one or two rings.

“Hey, Rio. I heard the delightful news.”

Her voice was still laced with laughter. She swung her leg as she continued.

    “Pfft, are you on duty?”

Seojin couldn’t hear the reply, but the woman laughed, patting the sofa cushion.

    Seojin stood frozen, watching her.

Seeing how happy the woman looked, Seojin could vividly picture Rio on the other end of the line, surely smiling as he listened.

“Yeah, me? I’m at your place, of course.”

Her answer was so casual, so natural.

“Uh-huh, yeah. You don’t have to come, you know?”

It was a stark contrast to Seojin herself, who did nothing but wait for him in an empty house. She bit her lip.

She was the one who always waited for him in this house, but in that moment, hearing those words, she knew. She wouldn’t be the one he was rushing home to see.

    Seojin averted her gaze.

The woman’s laughter continued, and the sound, so full of affection, seemed to flow around Seojin, excluding her completely. An impulse to flee the room washed over her.

Ugly jealousy felt like it was charring her heart to black.

    …Is this… really my place?

    Suddenly, the air felt heavy.

Overwhelmed, Seojin slowly turned away. The living room was filled with the sound of laughter. The woman was lounging on the sofa, near the precious things of Rio’s that Seojin had so carefully arranged.

Staying there any longer was too much for her to bear.

She tiptoed past the dining table toward the kitchen, her steps feigning a naturalness that she herself didn’t believe.

    She was running away.

Instead of sitting in the dining chair where she’d fallen asleep after eating cereal, Seojin crouched down in a corner of the kitchen, her back against the wall.

The tall furniture and the dining table hid her from view. Beyond the drawer handles, the shadows of the wooden furniture overlapped in a chaotic mesh. The sense of security from the enclosed space soothed her turbulent heart a little.

    She can’t see me here.

For as long as the two of them were alone in the house, Seojin prayed she would remain outside the woman’s line of sight.

Her heart beat quietly, and her hands gripped her knees.

    But then—

“Haha, looks like Rio will be here soon.”

The light voice drifted from the living room. The woman, having finished her call, spoke to her without any malice.

    “…Yes.”

Seojin’s small reply was barely audible, swallowed by the corner of the kitchen.

It was information she didn’t need to be told. The words gently impressed upon Seojin that this place was not hers.

The woman who could influence his plans and Seojin, who was trapped in the schedule he set for her, were worlds apart.

Did she… call Rio to get rid of me?

Seojin lowered her head again. But a moment later, quiet footsteps approached the kitchen.

    “Oh, there you are.”

The scent of the strange woman’s perfume.

“Are you in here because of me?”

Having found Seojin, she bent down slightly and smiled. Seojin took a sharp, small breath. The woman’s gaze was fixed on her.

“We haven’t properly introduced ourselves, even though it’s a bit late.”

Seojin didn’t want to take the hand she offered.

What could a twisted relationship of less than a month possibly mean in front of his real woman, who was sitting right here in his home?

Seojin said nothing. She just pressed her lips together and looked up at her.

Unconsciously, her eyes began to well up. What little pride she had left forced her to swallow the urge to cry right then and there.

But her feelings were so transparent that the woman withdrew her hand.

“Ah, sorry. I guess I made you uncomfortable.”

Then she casually sat down in front of her.

If you know I’m uncomfortable, you could at least leave,

Seojin swallowed the petty thought and deliberately looked away.

The woman’s gaze swept over Seojin, who refused to look at her.

Wow—she really likes him, doesn’t she? What should I do?

The thought was as accurate as if she’d read Seojin’s mind, yet there was no hint of sarcasm or ridicule.

Instead, it was a feeling closer to pure excitement, as if she’d discovered some interesting new content.

The woman didn’t stay silent, continuing to speak casually.

“My introduction is late. My name is Mia.”

Her name, her way of speaking, even the tone of her voice—everything was the polar opposite of Seojin. Mia tilted her head, looking at the shy, awkward girl.

“What I said earlier about being his wife was a joke. We dated a long time ago, but we broke up a while back.”

—Though I did come here for sex. Mia swallowed the rest of her sentence and beamed. Seeing the girl glare at her for a second before her eyes darted away like a frightened animal made Mia desperately want to chase her.

“You know, I like to talk, so I don’t mind doing it all myself~ but could you at least tell me your name?”

Seojin’s lips parted, but no sound came out. Mia didn’t hide the smirk that lifted the corners of her mouth, narrowing her eyes and tilting her head as if to wait.

    “Are you shy?”

    Seojin shook her head.

But the shake soon turned into a small nod. After all, just moments ago she had been consumed by ugly jealousy, and now that the woman had revealed herself to be a long-ago ex, Seojin found it impossible to figure out what to make of her.

One thing was certain: she was deeply ashamed to be seen like this.

Mia burst out laughing at Seojin’s reaction.

    “What the—you’re cute.”

Her eyes sparkled as she looked down at Seojin, who was hugging her knees. Mia smiled softly and stroked Seojin’s cheek. It was a useful trick for capturing someone’s attention.

At the incredibly gentle touch gliding across her skin, Seojin unconsciously parted her lips, her breath growing thin as she looked up at Mia.

“I thought you were pretty at first glance. Look at your eyes. How can they be so clear…?”

Mia gazed into Seojin’s eyes, gently tilting her head.

A beautiful face so close to her own—for a moment, Seojin was speechless. Her lips trembled slightly before she squeezed her eyes shut, unable to bear the intensity of the gaze.

    “…Hmm.”

At the small sound, Seojin’s shoulders flinched. Mia’s eyes never left Seojin as the corners of her mouth lifted even higher.

Ah, I want to torment her…

Unable to resist, Mia leaned forward and pressed her lips to Seojin’s.

    “……!”

Mwah—it was a kiss loud enough to be heard clearly.

Only then did Seojin’s eyes fly open.

Her shock was reflected plainly in her wide eyes. The warmth of Mia’s lips still lingered on hers, and her chest heaved a few times, her breath caught in her throat, unable to process what had just happened.

But Mia didn’t stop. A strange smile playing on her lips, her face slowly moved toward Seojin’s again.

    “…Wait—”

Just as Seojin gasped in alarm, Mia’s lips were about to press against hers again. This time, as if intending to go deeper, the very tip of her tongue was about to touch the seam of Seojin’s lips.

    “N-No…!”

    Seojin reflexively shoved Mia’s shoulder.

Pushed back, Mia lost her balance and let out a small gasp. “Ah.” She caught herself with a hand on the floor, but her brow furrowed delicately at a twinge of pain in her wrist.

    “Ouch…”

Seojin covered her mouth with both hands. The warm sensation seemed to linger, and her hands trembled as she hid her lips, as if afraid someone might see.

But what made her heart pound even harder was Mia’s short cry of pain as her hand hit the floor.

    “…A-Are you hurt?”

Having crawled the short distance, Seojin was now kneeling in front of Mia, her hands hovering uselessly in the air, unsure where to put them.

Her face was a mixture of panic and guilt. Mia’s body seemed so delicate, as if it would break from the slightest misstep, and Seojin worried she hadn’t controlled her strength.

Mia stared at Seojin for a long moment before smiling sweetly. Then, she reached out one hand and grabbed a large handful of Seojin’s breast, which hung heavy with gravity.

    “Gotcha.”

Then she began to knead it through the thin fabric of her shirt, which was all she wore instead of a bra. Seojin’s defenseless face instantly flushed a visible, deep red.
