Chapter 88: S#15. From Twilight to Space (2)
by fnovelpia
“Do you think I wouldn’t have tried to kill the leader myself?”
Brooke said through gritted teeth.
He was icing the back of his head with an ice pack after being suplexed by me.
To summarize our conversation at the dining table:
If we kill the leader of the alien wolf vampires, the subordinates will turn back into humans.
The only way to save Ellen, who had become a vampire, was to find and kill the leader.
I wanted Brooke’s cooperation.
“I’ve been searching for the leader for the past nine years. But I couldn’t find a single hair of his.”
“……”
“In the end, I had to personally kill my wife, who had turned into an alien wolf vampire.”
Brooke’s voice was filled with guilt.
The death of his wife. That was why he became a vampire hunter.
Just then, Nancy came up from the basement.
“Nancy, how is Ellen doing?”
“Mom’s condition… Summer, you should see for yourself…”
She looked extremely shocked.
I steeled myself and went down to the basement where Ellen was confined.
I locked eyes with Ellen, who was bound by a leash.
My steeled resolve crumbled. I was shocked.
“Ellen…”
“Su-Summer… My body feels strange…”
Ellen had perky wolf ears on her head.
She shyly hid her fluffy tail behind her.
But it seemed she couldn’t control it, as the tail wagged, making its presence known.
How cute…
Her pupils, tinged with red, were sharp.
“This muzzle is really uncomfortable. Can you take it off?”
“I’m sorry, Ellen. It’s necessary for safety.”
“Whine… And this leash too… I feel like a dog.”
Ellen squatted down and extended her neck. She began to howl loudly.
It hadn’t even been an hour since she was bitten, but she had already become a complete werewolf.
“Summer… I’m thirsty…”
“I’ll bring you some water.”
“No, I don’t want water…”
Ellen’s gaze turned to my neck.
“…I want to drink blood.”
Until now, Brooke had discovered the main characteristics of alien wolf vampires through his hunts.
-They don’t appear in mirrors.
-They can’t enter someone’s dwelling without an invitation.
-They become stronger under the full moon.
-Their weaknesses are garlic, crosses, silver, and sunlight.
-They fear water.
It seemed like a mix of vampire and werewolf traits.
“How did you know they came from outer space?”
“I saw them flying around in a UFO.”
Brooke emptied his drink.
We were in a bar. It was late at night, but there were quite a few people.
I took out a mirror I had brought from home. I tilted it slightly towards Brooke.
Brooke’s reflection appeared on the mirror’s surface. Thank goodness. He wasn’t a vampire.
Brooke looked at me incredulously.
“You… were you suspicious of me…?”
“It’s always darkest under the lamp. Please understand. I’ve been betrayed too many times.”
Brooke’s expression turned sour, but then he nodded.
“Good attitude. Caution is essential in vampire hunting.”
“I agree. The protagonists who enter a vampire’s castle die because they don’t act cautiously.”
“That’s why observation is crucial.”
Click- Brooke unfolded the crossbow on his wrist. Out of nowhere, he fired a silver arrow.
It lodged into the groin of a man sitting alone on a stool, drinking bourbon whiskey.
As he lowered his hand, the crossbow folded automatically.
“That guy, before entering the bar, asked the bartender, ‘Can I come in?’ A normal person wouldn’t ask such a question.”
The second characteristic of alien wolf vampires: ‘They can’t enter someone’s dwelling without an invitation.’
In old vampire movies, there’s a scene where a vampire enters the victim’s house after being invited or permitted.
The man with the silver arrow in his groin screamed loudly. All eyes in the bar turned towards him.
Brooke calmly took out a cigarette and lit it. The sharp cigarette smoke rose stylishly.
He pointed to the wooden cross hanging next to the wall clock.
“Moreover, he grimaced at that cross. That confirmed he was an alien wolf vampire.”
His observational skills were impressive.
The man, in pain, grabbed the silver arrow lodged in his precious part. Was he going to pull it out?
Brooke, moving at incredible speed, reached out and pulled the trigger of the crossbow.
Swoosh- a silver arrow embedded into the man’s hand.
Red droplets of blood fell onto the bar floor, stained with alcohol and vomit.
The vampire hunter’s night was brutal.
I marveled inwardly and shone the hand mirror on the man.
“…Mr. Brooke, he’s clearly reflected in the mirror.”
“……”
The man’s painful appearance, struck by two silver arrows, was vividly reflected in the mirror.
He was an ordinary person, not a vampire.
“Run!”
Brooke shouted.
We quickly dashed out of the bar.
Brooke had been hunting for nine years to avenge his wife, but he didn’t seem very skilled at distinguishing vampires.
We returned home.
Nancy was slumped over the dining table.
Around her were beer cans with the tops popped. She had drunk as much as three sips.
Nancy, who could get drunk just by smelling alcohol from 50 meters away, was thoroughly intoxicated.
Nancy couldn’t lift her head. Her white face was as red as an apple.
“Nancy, did you drink?”
“Summer… I can’t believe it…”
She spoke with a heavily slurred pronunciation.
“Mom… has become Dracula…”
“Dracula is the name of a Count. You should say vampire.”
“Anyway… I thought such things only happened in movies…”
Her mother’s transformation had clearly shocked her deeply.
Awoooo-
Ellen’s howling rose from the basement and echoed through the house.
Hearing that sad echo, Nancy started to sob.
She lifted a beer can to her mouth. But before she could drink, she passed out, already drunk.
I picked up Nancy and carried her to the second floor.
I took off her shoes and laid her on the bed.
Nancy wrapped her arms around my neck. She asked me to sleep with her because she was scared.
We lay down together.
Nancy hugged me. Her soft, slender body fit snugly in my arms.
I wondered if this is what it would feel like to have a little sister.
After a while, I heard the sound of her gentle breathing.
I pulled the blanket up to Nancy’s chin and left the room.
The next day.
I headed to the basement.
Sunlight was lethal to vampires. I had to check if the windows were thoroughly covered.
I saw Ellen lying in the dark basement.
“Summer…”
“Ellen, how are you feeling?”
The ears and tail were gone, but her sharp canines were still there.
“I’m hungry…”
“Hold on.”
I cut my wrist with a kitchen knife I brought from the kitchen. Not too deep, not too shallow.
Fortunately, I had grown numb to the pain.
I collected the blood flowing from the wound into a cereal bowl.
The smell of blood excited Ellen. She looked ready to break free and pounce.
I put a straw through the muzzle. When I placed the cereal bowl in front of her, she hungrily sucked the blood through the straw.
She looked like a stranded person in a hot desert finding an oasis.
“Eat slowly, Ellen. Do you want some water too?”
“Hiss, hiss…!”
Ellen, drinking the blood, shivered at her shoulders.
Come to think of it, alien wolf vampires were said to fear water.
Just mentioning water made her extremely anxious.
After leaving the basement, I went to work at Hyper Pharmacy.
Hilda Hyper, seeing the bandage on my arm, asked worriedly if I was hurt.
I made up an excuse that I fell down the stairs.
Before leaving work, I asked Hilda to get me some iron supplements.
I needed to replenish my iron every day since I had to draw blood until Ellen returned to being human.
The sky had darkened.
After work, I met with the vampire hunter, Brooke.
Brooke was talking with Mr. Miller in the Millers’ yard.
They looked serious, as if discussing something important.
After finishing his conversation, he came over to where I was waiting.
He turned his head towards the Millers’ house and spoke.
“Mr. Miller is a UFO researcher.”
“A UFO researcher…?”
“He can help us find out where the alien wolves came from.”
I glanced at the Millers’ house. The front door was open.
I saw Mrs. Miller, just as I remembered her, older than Mr. Miller.
Next to her was a cute little girl, the Millers’ daughter.
The child, shy, dashed inside as soon as she made eye contact with me.
Brooke and I started moving.
Our goal was clear. Eliminate the leader of the alien wolf vampires.
I needed to turn Ellen back into a human. Brooke needed revenge for his wife.
We went to a filthy alley in the outskirts of Tromaville.
“This is their hideout.”
He warned me to stay alert as they become more active after sunset.
At that moment, a woman came running from the end of the street.
She was drenched in sweat, as if chased by a robber.
“Please, save me…!”
She grabbed us and started babbling.
From what I could gather, she was being chased by people who looked like wolves.
Was she being chased by alien wolf vampires?
Brooke reassured her.
“Calmly tell us, miss. Where are they?”
“Th-th-that way…!”
“This way?”
Brooke aimed his crossbow at her head. He shot a silver arrow into her forehead.
The woman revealed her true nature with ears and a tail. She had lied about being chased.
I pulled out a hatchet and struck her mouth.
It wasn’t a silver axe, but it worked well enough. The beheaded vampire fell.
As we went deeper into the alley, there were homeless people.
Upon seeing Brooke, they scattered in fear. He seemed to be notorious around here.
But one didn’t run away.
It was a drug addict with a marijuana joint in his mouth.
“Hey man… you said you’d leave this area alone.”
The drug addict spoke lazily, inhaling the strong smoke.
I pulled out a mirror and reflected it on him. He had no reflection.
He was an alien wolf vampire.
“Don’t worry, Summer. He’s my informant. Actually, he’s the only vampire I can communicate with. He’s useful, so I keep him alive.”
“I see.”
A tamed wolf.
Brooke got straight to the point.
The drug addict shook his head.
“Hunting the leader… you gave up on that long ago.”
The addict seemed to know something about the leader.
I asked him directly.
“Do you know the leader’s gender?”
“Male.”
“Race?”
“White. I’ve never seen him myself, so I don’t know what he looks like. Just a lot of rumors.”
I thought he might have antennas or something since he was from outer space, but apparently, he looked normal.
The drug addict exhaled marijuana smoke and looked at Brooke.
“Brooke, you know the best way to meet the leader. And that it’s impossible.”
“Of course, I know. I haven’t forgotten that for a moment in the last nine years. But now it’s different.”
“Why?”
“Because I have this friend.”
Brooke pointed at me.
The drug addict grinned.
“So that’s why you’re here.”
There was a loud bang. It sounded like a bomb had dropped.
I turned around.
A huge figure was approaching us.
