Chapter 86: The Art of Making Friends
by AfuhfuihgsThe next morning, I took a shower with Delphine.
This time, I neither closed my eyes nor avoided her gaze.
Like Jinhyang had said, I needed to get used to it to some extent.
Of course, the embarrassment was inevitable.
“Ugh.”
With Delphine’s help, I dried off and put on my underwear.
Sitting on the bed with a freshly cleaned body, I saw Delphine approaching with a new patient gown.
“Harang, can you raise your arms?”
“Raise my arms.”
“No, not just say it actually lift them.”
“Oh.”
Following Delphine’s words, I tried lifting my arms.
I managed to hold them up for about three seconds before they gave out, forcing me to lower them again.
“Harang, can’t you keep your arms up?”
“Yeah. I don’t have the strength to lift them.”
“Oh dear.”
Delphine grabbed my arms and effortlessly lifted them up.
She was doing everything for me, so all I had to do was sit still.
“Thanks, Delphine.”
“There’s no need to thank me. I’m your assistant, after all.”
At her words, I flinched slightly.
Last night, she had said that if I treated her carelessly, she might quit being my assistant.
‘What if she really quits?’
Asking my subordinate to help me get dressed was definitely an abuse of power.
If Delphine decided to quit, I wouldn’t even be able to argue.
Right now, I had no choice but to keep her in a good mood.
“Delphine.”
“Hm?”
“You’re my favorite friend.”
As I spoke, I carefully watched her reaction.
She was crouching down to help me put on my pants.
When she slid them up from the bottom, I lifted my hips slightly.
“Harang… I’m your favorite friend?”
“Yeah.”
I nodded without hesitation.
After all, Delphine was my only friend so she was obviously my favorite.
It wasn’t a lie.
“M-My favorite…”
At my words, Delphine lowered her head, her body squirming awkwardly.
Even without thinking too hard, I could tell she was happy.
Maybe I should keep pushing forward like this.
Like a fierce and wild tiger.
“Delphine, let’s live together forever.”
“……”
She hesitated before nodding shyly.
Her entire face was red, as if all the blood in her body had rushed to it.
She fidgeted with her fingers for a moment before finally looking up, as if she had something to say.
“Uh… Harang.”
“Yeah?”
“You have a lot of friends, don’t you?”
“…?”
I was at a loss for words.
Because, contrary to her expectations, I didn’t actually have that many friends.
‘What do I do?’
I didn’t want to lie and say I had a lot of friends.
But admitting I had none was embarrassing, too.
Caught between the two options, I pressed my lips together in silence.
Meanwhile, Delphine stroked her chin and mumbled to herself.
“Harang must have at least a few hundred friends…”
“H-Hundreds…?”
At my startled voice, Delphine flinched.
“Oh, maybe not? Then is it a thousand?”
“A thousand…?”
“Not even a thousand? Then two thousand?”
What exactly did she think I was for the number to keep increasing?
At this rate, she might push it to ten thousand.
‘Ugh.’
There was no other way.
As embarrassing as it was, I had to tell her the truth.
I lowered my head and spoke to Delphine.
“D-Delphine.”
“Hm?”
“I… I actually don’t have that many friends…”
Delphine froze in place.
She looked like she couldn’t believe what I had just said.
“How many friends do you have, Harang?”
“Well…”
In reality, Delphine was my only real friend, but saying that out loud felt too embarrassing.
It would be better to just count everyone I knew.
‘The people I know are…’
Jinhyang, the twins, Kim Eunhyuk, and Silver.
That made five, including Delphine.
Of course, calling all of them “friends” was a bit of a stretch.
We were closer than acquaintances but not quite family.
‘Hmm…’
Still, if I worded it well, I could count them as friends.
After all, we were close.
With a small nod, I turned to Delphine and spoke.
“If I include you, then I have six friends.”
“Wow.”
Her American-style exclamation made me too embarrassed to lift my head.
I had acted like I had tons of friends, but it turned out to be just six.
She must think it’s ridiculous.
Maybe she was even disappointed in me.
Feeling embarrassed, I grabbed my tail with both hands, but then Delphine plopped down next to me.
And what she said next was completely unexpected.
“I’m jealous…”
“J-Jealous?”
“Yeah. Including you, I only have three friends…”
“Three?”
Delphine only had three friends?
I stared at her in shock, and she gave me a shy, awkward smile.
“And two of them are from my hometown, so in Korea, you’re my only friend.”
“O-Only one.”
Delphine had one friend in Korea.
I had six.
If we were just comparing numbers, I had six times as many friends as her.
It was an overwhelming difference.
‘So I actually have a lot of friends, huh?’
For Delphine to catch up to my friend count, it would take at least twenty years.
The massive gap made me chuckle.
“Pfft, hahaha.”
“W-Why are you laughing?”
Because now, I could confidently say I had a lot of friends.
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Delphine, do you want me to teach you how to make friends?”
“Huh? Really?”
“Yeah. I’ll help you make as many friends as I have.”
“Th-Thank you, Harang!”
Delphine immediately pulled me into a tight hug.
The force of it sent me tumbling onto the bed.
But it wasn’t uncomfortable.
We just lay there, looking at each other and giggling.
Then, we moved to the table in the hospital room.
Delphine’s eyes sparkled with excitement, like she was truly looking forward to my lesson.
Seeing her like that made me happy too.
“Student Delphine, are you ready for class?”
“Yes.”
“In class, you should say ‘Yes, teacher,’ not just ‘Yes.’”
“Yes, Teacher Harang.”
Good.
Her enthusiasm was high.
A teacher would be proud of such an eager student.
“Alright then, Student Delphine, this is your first lesson.”
“Yes, Teacher.”
She took out a notebook and pen.
She was taking this so seriously.
She probably didn’t want to miss a single word I said.
After all, I was a genius at making friends.
Thinking that I was her only hope made my shoulders feel heavy with responsibility.
I had no choice but to teach her properly.
“To get close to someone, licking their face is the most important step.”
“L-Lick?”
“Yeah. Like this.”
I demonstrated by licking Delphine’s face.
Probably about five times.
She tasted so good that I even smacked my lips at the end.
“Now, do you want to try, Delphine?”
“D-Do people really get closer by licking each other…?”
Delphine trailed off, sounding skeptical.
“Delphine, don’t you trust me?”
“It’s not that I don’t trust you, but…”
Yeah, right.
Her voice was full of doubt.
‘Sigh.’
Delphine lacked faith.
Faith in the power of licking.
What she needed now was a strong belief in it.
“Delphine, how did you feel when I licked your face?”
“It felt nice.”
“Right? Then, if you lick my face, would I feel good or bad?”
“G-Good… maybe?”
She looked unsure, so I grinned and nodded.
“Yep! If you lick my face, I’ll be super happy.”
“O-Oh, I see.”
Seemingly convinced, Delphine slowly stuck out her tongue.
Just as I was closing my eyes to feel the soft sensation of her tongue on my cheek—
Clack— The door swung open, and someone walked in.
“What… are you two doing?”
Just from the voice alone, I could tell.
It was Jinhyang.
‘Does the Boss have a lot of friends?’
She probably had some.
But likely fewer than me.
Even kind-hearted Delphine only had three friends in the entire world.
Considering Jinhyang’s position, four would probably be her limit.
‘She should join the lesson too.’
I quickly tapped the empty chair beside me.
“Boss, come sit here.”
Jinhyang hesitated for a moment but then walked over and sat down.
“What were you two doing?”
“We’re in the middle of a lesson.”
“A lesson?”
“Yes! I was teaching Delphine how to make friends. Do you want to join my class too, Boss?”
I looked at her expectantly.
I really wanted her to participate.
“…Sure, why not.”
“Yes!”
With Jinhyang’s permission granted, it was time to switch back to teacher mode.
“Normally, during class, you have to call me ‘Teacher.’ But I’ll make an exception for you, Boss.”
“Oh, lucky me.”
“Ehehe.”
I knew Jinhyang didn’t like speaking formally to me.
There was no need to force her.
The important thing was that she was willing to take my class.
For now, I needed to finish the lesson I was in the middle of.
And since we had a new student, this was a perfect opportunity.
“Delphine.”
“Hm?”
“Why don’t you try it on the Boss instead of me?”
“J-Jinhyang unnie…?”
Delphine flinched at my suggestion.
I knew what she was thinking.
It must be terrifying to do it to Jinhyang.
Her first impression was sharp and intimidating.
“It’s okay. If you want to get closer, you have to do this.”
“O-Okay, I’ll try.”
Gulp—
Delphine swallowed hard and scooted her chair closer to Jinhyang.
“What exactly are we doing?”
Jinhyang, having arrived mid-lesson, simply observed the situation in confusion.
“Pffft.”
In this case, it was better to let her experience it firsthand.
Sometimes, actions speak louder than words.
