Chapter Index

    Episode 8

I’ve read countless web novels and conquered notoriously difficult games.

One thing I’ve learned about masterminds is that they quickly lose interest in those who blindly obey.

Since I had decided to become her ‘left hand’, I needed to stand out. To avoid being discarded, I had to prove my worth.

It seemed my gamble had paid off.

“Hidden ambitions, you say… I had no idea you were such a humorous individual, Aubrey.”

“I assure you, my Lady, I’m quite serious. In the few days I’ve been working with the Inspection Unit, I’ve been impressed by the preparations, Jericho’s competence, and the fact that we operate with the Duke’s full authority.”

“And why do you find those things significant?”

“It suggests that this wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. This plan has been in motion for at least three years, perhaps even five. You’ve been sponsoring Jericho for quite some time.”

Most people would have crumbled under such direct questioning, but the mastermind before me remained unfazed.

It was time to raise the stakes.

“And assigning Lady Selendis to me was an unexpected move. I have a hunch about her background. Her exceptional swordsmanship and potent aura at such a young age suggest she hails from a lineage of skilled warriors.”

Finally, a flicker of emotion crossed her face. I wished I could see Selendis’ reaction.

“Aubrey, you seem to be under a misconception. It’s one of my hobbies, you see. Sponsoring talented individuals who can benefit the territory. You could easily confirm this with the Head Butler.”

    “Is that so?”

“I have a duty to serve my family and my people. Since I can’t take a more active role, I contribute through sponsorship.”

    She was truly exceptional.

Of course, not all masterminds were villains. Some were driven by noble ideals. The problem was, most of them turned out to be villains.

And the biggest problem was that I had no idea how ‘Queen Maker’ would unfold.

I had pushed her far enough.

Lady Lucia had received my message. It was time to sheathe my claws.

“I understand, my Lady. I apologize if my questions have caused any discomfort. I’ll refrain from prying any further.”

“Not at all. I don’t mind your curiosity.”

With those words, she gently rang a bell. A maid entered the room.

“Sir Edric once told me that every action has a reason. You’re simply curious about my reasons, aren’t you?”

    “Indeed, my Lady.”

“I welcome such inquiries. After all, we have great things to accomplish together.”

She smiled, her expression serene and gentle. Then, she addressed the maid.

“I’d like to offer Sir O’Brien some tea. Could you bring ‘that’?”

    “Yes, my Lady.”

    ‘That’?

    My heart skipped a beat.

“Since you’ve entertained me with your questions, I believe it’s only fair that I entertain you with a story.”

    “I’m all ears, my Lady.”

“Did you perhaps suspect that I was behind yesterday’s ambush?”

    This crazy…

I was so stunned that I almost gaped at her. Fortunately, I managed to maintain my composure, my only reaction a slight twitch of my eyebrow.

    I couldn’t lie.

I had already voiced my suspicions to Selendis.

“I wouldn’t say ‘suspect’, my Lady. I simply considered the possibility that it was part of your grand plan.”

“You’re quite skilled at sugarcoating your words, Aubrey. There’s no need for such formalities.”

“How could I possibly speak so casually to you, my Lady? You are the shining star of House Kalisto. Your dedication to your family and your people is an inspiration to us all.”

“Then tell me, why did you think I was involved?”

“You once inquired about my martial arts training. I sensed that you were curious about my true abilities. However, I’m now certain that yesterday’s ambush was unrelated to you.”

“And how did you reach that conclusion?”

“If you had sent those assassins, they wouldn’t have fled. They would have fought to the death, pushing me to my limits.”

Her expression shifted, a hint of amusement flickering in her eyes. She covered her mouth with her hand, a delicate laugh escaping her lips.

“You truly are a remarkable individual, Aubrey. It’s not often that one finds someone so skilled in both martial and intellectual pursuits. Your insight is impressive.”

The maid returned with a tray, setting down a teapot and teacups. The Lady poured the tea herself, a gesture of respect.

    *Pour*

An ominous-looking liquid filled the delicate teacup. She offered it to me.

“Drink. It’s a fine tea from the East.”

‘Mind’s Eye’ flashed purple. I couldn’t identify the contents of the tea, only that my ability was ineffective against her.

    “Thank you, my Lady.”

I lifted the cup to my lips, inhaling the aroma.

It was pungent, unlike anything I had encountered before.

This world was full of dangerous poisons, capable of not only ending lives but also controlling minds.

There were poisons that would rot your flesh from the inside out, poisons that would cause your blood to seep from every orifice.

It was a common trope in web novels and games that borrowed elements from fantasy and martial arts genres.

    But I had no choice.

I took a sip. It was sweet and nutty, a cool sensation spreading through my throat and into my stomach.

    “This is…”

    “You recognize it?”

“I’m not sure what it is, but it seems to be reacting to my aura.”

    She nodded.

“I understand you suspected me of sending those assassins to test your abilities. Since you already believe I’m capable of such things, I decided to give you a real test. So you’re an aura user.”

The tea was called ‘Mana Tea’. It was a rare and valuable beverage that enhanced the recovery rate of aura and mana users.

“Yes, I received some training at an academy.”

“With your potential, wouldn’t it have been more beneficial to attend a proper academy?”

“I couldn’t afford it. And becoming a knight wasn’t my goal.”

She seemed to accept my explanation.

It might not have been obvious, but I could sense it. Her interest in me had deepened.

“I’m not familiar with martial arts, but I believe it takes considerable skill to deflect an ambush without sustaining a single injury. I heard Lady Selendis was injured, but you emerged unscathed. It’s only natural to assume that you’re stronger than her.”

“That’s a reasonable assumption. But I assure you, my words were not a lie.”

I had a reason for being so confident.

After possessing O’Brien’s body, I had discovered a letter from his mentor at the academy back home.

Through their correspondence, I had learned that the real O’Brien had indeed received two years of swordsmanship training.

I had also gained a deeper understanding of his character.

Even if the Lady investigated my background, she wouldn’t find any inconsistencies.

“Very well. I believe you. It’s not a master’s place to doubt the loyalty of their servant. What are your plans?”

“I intend to pay Baron Roman a visit.”

“Is it wise to approach him so directly?”

It was the best course of action. I could use ‘Mind’s Eye’ to gauge his reactions, determine the truth behind his words.

“Two hundred gold coins have changed hands. Even if the debt was settled legally, it warrants further investigation.”

“The maid’s name is Lilith, correct?”

    “Yes.”

“What about the two hundred gold? As you said, it’s a significant sum.”

“It will be returned tenfold once this mission is complete. However, it wouldn’t be wise to simply forgive the debt. I suggest we deduct a portion of her wages until it’s repaid.”

“Why not simply consider it a gesture of goodwill?”

“Precedence is important. I don’t want the Lucius Inspection Unit to be seen as a charity organization.”

Lady Lucia smiled, her approval evident.

“I agree. I made the right choice appointing you as Inspector.”

“I’ll continue to do my best, my Lady.”

I finished my tea and left the mansion with Selendis. She remained silent until we reached the safe house.

    “You suspected me, didn’t you?”

“Let’s be clear. I wasn’t suspicious of you, but of your background. And as an Inspector, it’s my duty to be suspicious.”

    “…”

She still seemed reluctant to open up. It was a cliché, but I decided to let it go.

Jericho was busy preparing something when we entered.

    *Chop! Chop! Chop!*

His knife moved with impressive speed and precision.

He was butchering a large chicken, various vegetables neatly arranged on the cutting board.

“Welcome back! You’re just in time. Tonight’s special is Jericho’s signature chicken stew!”

    “Signature chicken stew?”

“Just look at these fresh ingredients!”

Besides the vegetables, there was a pile of dark, leafy herbs. He gestured towards them with a shrug.

“These are medicinal herbs used in potion-making. People usually use them for potions, but that’s just a misconception. They pair wonderfully with chicken, adding a unique flavor!”

“You’re a skilled cook as well. Is there anything you can’t do? Are all academy prodigies like this?”

“Hahaha, there are things I can’t do. I can’t fight. I’ve never hit anyone in my life. I’ve been hit, but never hit anyone.”

It was a rather significant flaw for a member of a secret organization, especially one involved in investigations. Of course, it was possible he was hiding his true strength.

“Do you remember the face of the person who hit you? I’ll be happy to avenge you.”

“No, no, it’s fine. It’s all in the past. Anyway, I gathered some information on Baron Roman and his territory while you were gone. It’s in the next room. Take a look.”

The room was filled with documents and books. I was once again reminded of the benefits of being an academy prodigy.

“Information on Baron Roman’s businesses and personal assets, I presume?”

“There’s also information on his standing army.”

“You can handle the military information, Selendis.”

I settled into a comfortable chair and began reading. I absorbed every detail, every connection, every financial transaction.

“Master, are you planning to visit Baron Gerard’s castle immediately?”

“I was, but I think I need to adjust my plans.”

I tossed the file onto the table. It contained a portrait of Satyr.

“I have a bad feeling about this guy. Let’s start with him.”

    “What about an escort?”

“The two of us are enough. We can’t afford to be seen mobilizing troops while under the protection of the Inspection Unit.”

    Hours passed.

The aroma of delicious food filled the air. Jericho emerged from the kitchen, a wide grin on his face.

“I’m sure you’re both famished. My masterpiece is ready. Come and get it!”

We gathered around the table. The chicken was golden brown, expertly carved.

    “This is amazing.”

It was truly delicious. His ‘signature stew’ lived up to its name.

“Hahaha, eat up! There’s plenty more where that came from.”

“Jericho, I’m planning to visit Baron Gerard’s territory tomorrow. Would you like to join us?”

    “Me, sir?”

I tore into a chicken leg, my tone casual.

“It can get a bit stuffy staying cooped up in the safe house. A change of scenery might do you some good.”

“But as I mentioned before, I’m not very good at fighting.”

“Fighting is a skill you learn by getting hit.”

    “…Sir?”
