Chapter 70: The Angel Learns the Style (1)

    Episode 70

    James smiled and said,

“Don’t worry too much. Leffriel is such a passive being that he’s been called the tool of Heaven… so the risk of going berserk is much lower compared to other awakenings.”

James nodded after saying those words. But Leffrey couldn’t easily believe it.

‘Hmph, the moment Leffriel awakened, he severed the limbs of a Demon King’s Four Heavenly Kings and slaughtered the surrounding demon army elites. And you’re calling him passive?’

    Leffrey sighed.

It was already done, there’s no point in arguing with James.

He said he had no choice but to do it for humanity. Let’s just let it go.

Besides, there’s no point fighting against someone much stronger and more powerful than him, an academy principal.

‘Ugh, there’s no other choice but to let it go.’

Truly he was Leffrey, the Buddha Angel.

He almost looked like he was about to enter Nirvana.

Leffrey, pulling himself together, said to James,

    “Okay.”

“As expected, I knew you would understand.”

    “But still……”

Leffrey glared at James with his bloodshot eyes.

“You’ll have to pay me compensation!”

Even if he became a Buddha Angel, he still had to receive what he deserved.

How dare James summon such a dangerous entity like Leffriel without his consent. He had to receive hefty compensation for this.

    Extortion Angel Leffrey activated.

    “C-Compensation?”

    James tilted his head.

As if he couldn’t believe an angel would even say such things.

    “Give it to me!”

    “W-Wait a moment.”

Leffrey was too short to grab the collar of James, who was over 6’2. So, he clung to the sleeve of James’ suit, whining instead. (TL Note: 190 cm is like 6’2)

    “Givegivegive it to me!”

    Thus, Leffrey’s tantrum continued.

    James watched him.

‘Could this be how Park Jin-ho felt?’

The boy clutching his sleeve, throwing a tantrum,

Honestly, all angels were beautiful, but…

    Leffrey was somehow even cuter.

    “I’ll give it to you.”

James said with a smile like a doting father.

    * * *

Leffrey, returned to the Central Academy through James’ magic.

Inside Leffrey’s arms were various expensive items James had given him.

“Phew, seeing these items… I feel much better now.”

    Leffrey’s eyes sparkled.

He had only taken the items that looked expensive from James’ magical workshop, so… Just selling these would be enough for him to live comfortably for the rest of his life.

Plus, there were a few items that James had specially picked for him.

    Saying they were particularly good.

‘Now all that’s left is to defeat the demon king!’

So, all he had to do was defeat the demon king.

Once he defeated the demon king, Leffrey could live a luxurious life with all the items he had gotten.

    “…Good!”

Leffrey’s mood improved again, imagining such a future.

‘I’ll ask Jack to appraise them later.’

Jack White, a golden spoon from the White family, and… naturally, a member of the Connoisseurs’ Club.

Although Jack didn’t admit it, he and Leffrey were already somewhat friends, so he would appraise these items while grumbling.

    So Leffrey decided to smile.

That was the only way to suppress the unease rising within him.

    ‘You must fulfill your mission.’

    Leffriel whispered in his mind.

    ‘Let me out.’

An ominous voice echoed within Leffrey’s small head.

    “No.”

    Leffrey replied.

    “I’ll never hurt my friends.”

    The little angel vowed.

    * * *

    Humans are adaptable creatures.

Of course, Leffrey was an angel, but… well, that wasn’t important now.

    ‘…Leffriel? Are you sleeping?’

It had been a week since the Past Life Awakening selection test, and Leffrey was already used to living with Leffriel in his head.

First of all, Leffriel was mostly silent.

He rarely talked about himself, except for occasionally telling Leffrey to let him out and fulfill his mission.

    And Leffriel was well-behaved.

He didn’t try to forcefully take over Leffrey’s body like the sealed beings in mangas, and he didn’t seem to have any ambitions or be consumed by madness.

He just sat there blankly, spending time in Leffrey’s mind.

    Spaced out-

Leffrey’s heart felt strange whenever he saw Leffriel’s blank face.

    ‘Leffriel? Are you sleeping?’

Then came a flat voice from within his mind.

It was strange how despite the flat tone, he felt comforted by such a voice.

    ‘Angels don’t need sleep.’

‘I see. Then can you tell me how to use this dagger?’

Leffrey held Flabellum and muttered to himself.

    Flabellum.

A dagger that came with Sanctus, an angelic item that Leffrey had yet to figure out how to properly use.

With Sanctus, he had figured out how to use it after a lot of trial and error…

‘If it had bad stats like Sanctus, I could have found a way to use it… But Flabellum’s stats aren’t bad.’

Sanctus, the angel’s rainbow glowing gloves, was an item that aided in controlling Angelic Abilities.

However, it turned out that it consumed a lot of Angelic Power while not increasing the power of Angelic Abilities, but rather specialized in restricting them…

Leffrey had to rack his brain to find a special way to use it.

    But Flabellum was different.

    ‘Flabellum.’

    ===

    Flabellum (EX)

    Dagger Item

    Item Attribute: Holy

In the age when legends and myths were recorded on maps, angels enforced the will of Heaven upon Earth through countless powers.

Sometimes by helping the weak and doing good, sometimes by filling the stomachs of the hungry, sometimes by choosing heroes and defeating evil, and sometimes, as an authority of Heaven, by directly carrying out judgment.

And there was a dagger bestowed upon the archangel to signify the authority of the judge.

Flabellum symbolizes the honor of Heaven, and its role is to drive away impurities during sacrifices offered to Heaven.

This dagger inflicts massive damage against impure and evil beings.

This dagger strengthens an angel’s combat-related powers.

This dagger is imbued with the honor of Heaven, revealing its brilliance in the hands of the righteous.

[Angelic Power consumption increases when this item is equipped!]

[Martial Arts of the Archangel who Tramples Dragons is enhanced when this item is equipped!]

[This item is EX-rank and cannot be destroyed!]

    ===

    Leffrey, reading the description, thought,

    ‘It’s a bit ambiguous.’

    Flabellum’s stats were good.

It had the flaw of consuming a lot of Angelic Power, just like Sanctus, but the additional damage against impure and evil beings was great, and it enhanced the Martial Arts of the Archangel who Tramples Dragons.

And it could emit a powerful light by consuming Angelic Power.

‘The last perk is a bit strange… but the other two are quite good.’

But the problem was that Flabellum was a dagger.

‘My current fighting style is a combination of Fairy Martial Arts for footwork, Cheongu for swordsmanship, and Klein-style magic for ranged attacks. So if Flabellum is a dagger…’

Of course, he could use Cheongu Swordsmanship with a dagger.

But Cheongu Swordsmanship with a dagger…

‘The reach is too short. I would have to fully engage in close combat to use it properly.’

Then there would be no chance to use Klein-style magic.

‘This can’t be Flabellum’s true strength. Because Leffriel…’

Against Drewmark, when Leffriel was judging him, he was using a combination of close and long-ranged attacks.

    Leffrey, seeing that, instinctively realized.

That this was the true essence of angelic combat.

    So Leffrey asked Leffriel again.

‘Stop being stubborn and just tell me!’

    ‘……’

‘Are you not going to talk?’

    ‘……’

Leffriel, looking like a doll with his blank expression that rivaled Mari’s, blatantly ignored the boy.

Crouched down, his eyes peeking out, he looked a little pitiful.

‘Hmph, it doesn’t matter if you don’t tell me. I have great teachers anyway.’

Leffriel tilted his head, not answering.

    ‘Great, they’re great teachers!’

Park Jin-ho, who always focused on swordsmanship, Lusa, who always emphasized martial arts, and Klein, who pressured him to only focus on magic.

The reason why Leffrey’s fighting style was so awkward was because of those professors who were fanatics about their own techniques.

Therefore, if Leffrey wanted to become stronger, he needed to develop his own unique fighting style.

But creating a fighting style, something that Yumari, Hongwol, and Soya could easily do, was a difficult task for Leffrey, the talentless angel.

‘To learn the angelic fighting style, I need Leffriel.’

    “Ugh.”

Leffrey, his head down, groaned quietly.

At that moment, he heard a girl’s footsteps.

    Thump, thump, thump-

The pink cat that had been basking in the sun nearby, purring, suddenly perked up its ears.

    “L-Leffrey!”

A girl’s voice, filled with concern.

    “Soya? Why?”

    “We’re in big trouble!”

Soya shouted, clutching her witch hat.

‘Ahhh, it’s only been a week since I repaired that witch hat…’

The brim of the hat was already crumpled.

‘I can level up my Repair skill. As expected, Soya is my Angelic Power, mineral, vespene gas…’ (TL Note: Starcraft reference. Minerals and Vespene Gas are resources.)

    Hehe- Leffrey smiled.

“Leffrey, this isn’t the time to smile!”

    “Why, what happened?”

    Soya shouted,

“For this final exam, Lusa, the Martial Arts Department professor, will be in charge of everything!”

    “…What about the other professors?”

“I don’t know. Rumor has it that something happened at the Mariana Camp, and they all went to support, but that’s just a rumor.”

Something happened at the Mariana Camp? Mariana Camp is humanity’s frontline and core base.

‘Hmm, if it was that serious, they would have canceled the exams.’

    Leffrey muttered, folding the laundry,

    “I see. It happens.”

“What do you mean, it happens?!”

    Soya whined.

“Lusa, that elf whose brain is full of muscles. A black magic hater, no, a magic hater! There’s only one thing that will happen if that kind of elf is in charge of the exam!”

    Leffrey thought for a moment.

Lusa was a good professor in her own way. She beat up students under the guise of education, slept during class while having students spar with each other, confiscated cigarettes from students then smoked them herself, picked fights, cursed, threw tantrums, and cheered for students who were fighting instead of stopping them.

    And she really hated working.

    “Hmm.”

    Leffrey shook his head.

    Well, it couldn’t be helped.

    “Soya, she’s still a professor… you know?”

    “I don’t care… If Lusa’s in charge of the exam, I’m sure it’s…”

    “It’s?”

“It’s going to be a bloodbath, sniff.”

Soya, frightened, pulled down the brim of her hat, covering her face.

And then she suddenly started coughing.

    “I suddenly have a headache. A-And chills…”

    “Are you sick?”

Then she slowly shuffled towards her bedroom.

“To be sick at a time like this. Well, can’t be helped. I already won first place on the last midterm, so I’ll just give the black magic hater a chance this ti…”

    Soya couldn’t finish her sentence.

Leffrey subtly approached her and gently touched Soya’s forehead.

“That’s strange. You don’t have a fever. Want to lie down? I’ll brew you some tea.”

    “Ah… uh!”

“Wait, I can feel a fever now. Soya, since when have you been sick?”

    Soya shouted,

    “I don’t know!”

Screech- A loud noise echoed from the academy main building.

It was the characteristic white noise of a telepathy amplifier.

“What is that? An academy-wide announcement?”

Leffrey and Soya focused on the voice that would come next.

“Ah… ah. Telepathy test, telepathy test. Good, it’s working.”

    It was Lusa’s voice.

“You little brats, I’ve posted the final exam announcement on the main building’s bulletin board, so make sure to check it. No, you don’t need to check if you’re confident. You know my style, right?”

    Then came a rough laugh.

    “Hehehehehe, great.”

    Click- The white noise disappeared.

    “Professor Lusa…”

Soya started coughing again, and Leffrey muttered in a small voice,

    ****

TL AFTERWORD: Ah when i was translating ‘Mariana Camp’ I thought it was good but now that it was to this point, I realized that mariana base sounds better. Oh well can’t stop now or else it’d be confusing.
