Chapter 425
by MeherChapter 13 – Angel’s Advent #3
Count Bayer was flustered.
He was a seasoned veteran of a hundred battles and a Sword Saint on the verge of reaching the realm of principle, but even for him, some things were simply beyond his control.
“I-Isn’t the due date still more than a month away?”
The words slipped out unconsciously. Despite her pain, Yuna managed a smile and said, “It seems our child is a bit impatient.”
It wasn’t a convincing explanation, but the validity of her reasoning was hardly the most important thing right now.
Snapping back to his senses, Count Bayer lowered himself to meet Yuna’s gaze and squeezed her hand tightly.
“Yuder will be here soon. Everything will be alright, so don’t you worry.”
“Yes, dear.”
Just as Yuna smiled again, a voice cut through the air.
“Father! Bring Mother this way!”
Having grasped the situation the moment he stepped off the stage, Yuder had unleashed the divinity of night to block the view of outsiders before shouting to Count Bayer.
Fortunately, a number of individuals with diverse abilities had gathered around the Count.
Lena, who had risen hastily, used her telekinesis to levitate Yuna, keeping her lying down. Belkian and Fran, who wielded the power of life, followed right behind to monitor Yuna’s condition.
“We’re going to the royal palace. Cordelia, please take care of the others.”
“Huh? O-Okay.”
As Cordelia answered in a daze, Yuder took a deep breath and began to run, leading the way.
*
About an hour later.
Cordelia, having escorted the others from the VIP seats to the royal palace—or more precisely, to a room right next to the delivery room Yuder had prepared—fidgeted with her fingers, her face etched with anxiety.
A baby was being born.
Her mother-in-law was giving birth to her third child.
Yuder’s younger sister was being born.
Cordelia swallowed hard.
She wasn’t the one giving birth, but her heart wouldn’t stop pounding. No, her heart wasn’t just pounding; it was hammering so hard she felt dizzy.
Will she be okay? Will she be born safely?
Yuna’s due date was originally more than a month away. That was the only reason she had been able to attend the Advent ritual in the first place.
But for it to happen now…
There was no rule that a baby had to be born after a full ten months, but coming a month—no, almost two months—early, it was impossible not to worry.
Oh, please. Oh, please.
Cordelia clasped her hands together and prayed. As a Guardian of Pleiades, she had no idea who she was supposed to pray to, but she prayed anyway.
Please, please. Lady Athalia, Lord Yuder, Lady Cordelia.
After praying even to Yuder and herself, Cordelia took a deep breath and opened her eyes. She saw the others gathered around, their faces filled with concern.
“Are you alright, sister?”
“Huh? Oh, yeah, I’m fine. Of course, I’m fine.”
Cordelia forced a smile as she answered Red Wind’s question. And when she thought about it, it was true. The one giving birth was Yuna, not Cordelia herself. So there was no reason for her to be so anxious and on edge—
How could I not be?!
This wasn’t just anyone; it was Yuna, her mother-in-law, giving birth. And to Yuder’s younger sister, no less!
“Sister, it’s really okay. I’m not just saying that. I’ve given birth before. It’ll be fine.”
Red Wind said with a smile, and Sun Song, standing behind her, nodded with a bright smile of his own.
What Red Wind said was true. She had already had a child with Sun Song. Cordelia hadn’t seen the baby at this Advent ritual, but she had seen him when she visited the Wild Lands. He took after Sun Song, an exceptionally robust baby who was a full head taller than other children his age.
I was so shocked back then, thinking a kid was having a kid.
Recalling the memory, Cordelia let out a weak laugh and took another deep breath. To calm herself further, she turned to Adelia, another married woman with children, who was right beside her.
“Adelia, you were okay, right?”
“Huh? Oh… I… was f-fine.”
Adelia broke into a cold sweat, forcing an awkward smile. It was no wonder; she had gone through a terrible ordeal giving birth to twins. It wasn’t a joke—the memory of nearly dying made her break out in a cold sweat all over again.
Adelia’s reaction made Cordelia’s face cloud with worry once more, and Red Wind was at a loss for words, merely pursing her lips.
But it was at that very moment.
“My lady, my lady. Please listen to me.”
“Huh? Oh, Kirara.”
Kirara, who had been standing near Red Wind, smiled prettily when Cordelia responded. She raised her right index finger and said, “Her Ladyship has already given birth twice, hasn’t she? Doesn’t that make her a pro at giving birth? So the third one should be fine, too. Because she’s a pro.”
“Huhhh?”
A pro at giving birth?
She thought it was utter nonsense, but somehow, it was also strangely convincing. After all, this was Yuna’s third time.
Meanwhile, while Cordelia was seriously pondering Kirara’s nonsense—no, her cat-sense—Red Wind shot Kirara a look of utter exasperation and sent a telepathic message.
[Hey! You crazy cat! What do you mean, a pro at giving birth! A pro! Huh?]
[What, what, what! It’s not like I said something completely wrong!]
[Aargh, seriously. You have no common sense. None at all.]
As Red Wind clicked her tongue, Kirara clenched her tiny fists and her tail shot straight up. She was furious that a barbarian was lecturing her about common sense.
[Says the barbarian!]
[What? What did you just say? Huh? What did you say?!]
[I called you a barbarian! You barbarian!]
[This cat is asking for it! Maybe I should make some butterfly soup to help Her Ladyship recover?!]
True to their nature of bickering like cats and dogs whenever they met, the two began another war of words—or more accurately, a silent war waged through telepathy and magic.
Standing next to the two of them, Adelia glanced at Gale, who had been sitting with a stiff expression for a while now. He seemed incredibly nervous about the birth of his new sibling.
Well, she is his sister, born nearly thirty years apart.
She had thought it was an amazing feat to begin with, but phrasing it as a sentence made the fact seem even more incredible in various ways.
Come to think of it, she’s younger than my own children.
Adelia briefly imagined Amber and Aiden playing with their aunt, who was younger than them, and was overcome by a truly strange feeling.
And that strange feeling was shared by Yuder, who was in a similar situation to Gale. Whether it was a thirty-year or twenty-year age gap, his new sibling was young enough to be his daughter rather than his sister.
But Yuder didn’t dwell on it. He had already accepted the fact that she was his sister, and more importantly, his priority right now was to soothe the anxious Cordelia.
“It’s okay, Cordelia. She’ll be fine.”
The baby was being born a little early, but there shouldn’t be any major problems. And even if there were, there was a high chance that he and Cordelia could do something about it with their powers.
As Yuder held her hand tightly and calmly explained, one by one, all the reasons why everything would be fine, Cordelia felt not only her breathing but also her heart rate gradually stabilize.
That’s my Yuder. My cure-all.
Finally reassured by Yuder’s words that there would be no problems, and that even if there were, he could solve them, Cordelia let out a long breath and straightened her posture.
“Feeling better now?”
“Yes, I’m fine. Thank you.”
Cordelia replied with a small smile. After taking a few more breaths, she looked up as if something had just occurred to her.
“By the way, Yuder. Where are Dahlia and Maia?”
Almost everyone from the VIP seats was gathered here, but now that she looked, she couldn’t see Dahlia or Maia. In terms of their relationship with Yuna, the two of them were much closer than Scarlett, Kaisa, and Lucas, who were sitting here somewhat by chance.
“Dahlia and Maia are outside the palace. This Advent ritual is a national event, so it has to continue. By now… they’re probably handing out scriptures and holding a signing event.”
Cordelia nodded in understanding at Yuder’s explanation. The old Cordelia might have questioned it, asking, “What are they, idols?” but having experienced all sorts of events because of Yuder, she simply accepted it as a matter of course.
Some more time passed.
Just as Red Wind and Kirara, having exhausted their energy and mana in their telepathic and magical battle, were sitting side by side and panting…
Cordelia, who had been half-dozing from tension and fatigue, suddenly snapped her eyes open.
She had a feeling.
And Cordelia’s beast-like intuition was not wrong this time either.
“She’s born. Mother and baby are both healthy.”
Count Chase appeared, opening the door to the room, and spoke briefly and to the point. At his words, everyone who had gathered from the VIP seats let out a small cheer.
Count Chase then took another step forward and spread his arms, creating a silver mirror with his mana.
Everyone stood up as the magic mirror showed the inside of the delivery room, and Cordelia gasped.
“Mother!”
Yuna, drenched in sweat, was smiling brightly as she held a baby wrapped in a swaddling cloth. Count Chase smiled anew at the sight of Count Bayer, who was shedding tears of joy. Yuder and Cordelia focused their gazes on the baby in Yuna’s arms.
She had blue hair like Gale and mystical green eyes like Yuder.
But one look was enough to tell she was no ordinary baby. Despite being a premature baby born more than a month early, her hair was almost fully grown, and on her head, a pair of wolf ears perked up.
“It’s because she was born with a strong infusion of the Wild God’s power. Unlike Yuder and Gale, who were born closer to human.”
Rough Avalanche, who no one had even noticed was there, waddled forward and spoke, drawing everyone’s attention. Enjoying the spotlight—a pleasure he had come to know thanks to his life as a mascot in the Bayer household—he continued his explanation.
“This child was conceived not long after Yuna recovered a great deal of her power in the holy land. If Yuder is half-human, half-Wild God, this child is far more Wild God than human. The ratio is about 7:3… no, more like 8:2 in favor of the Wild God. I suspect that’s why she was born early.”
At Rough Avalanche’s explanation that this was essentially the birth of a Wild God, Cordelia blinked a few times before asking the most important question.
“So there are no problems with her health, right?”
“That’s right. She seems very healthy.”
Finally relieved by Rough Avalanche’s answer, Cordelia beamed and squeezed Yuder’s hand.
“The baby is beautiful.”
“She is. Very beautiful.”
She had heard from various people that newborn babies usually looked like monkeys, but the youngest of the Bayer family was not like that at all. As her long hair proved, she already had the appearance of a beautiful baby who looked to be at least a month old.
Cordelia stared at the baby’s face for a long time before her gaze shifted to Yuna and Count Bayer. The sight of the two of them crying and laughing with happy faces was wonderful to see, and she felt a pang of envy.
“Yuder.”
“Yes?”
“Let’s work hard, too.”
The words slipped out, and Cordelia instantly flinched, her body stiffening. She had belatedly realized what she had just said and how Yuder might react to it.
“Yes, Cordelia. Let’s work hard. I’ll work very hard.”
Yuder gave a jet-black smile and squeezed her hand. A sudden fear gripped Cordelia, and she forced a weak smile, trying to reason with him.
“L-Let’s work a little less hard. Okay?”
“No, I’ll do my best.”
Yuder declared emphatically and began to chug a potion from a brown bottle he had produced from who-knows-where.
“Wh-What is that?”
“Oh, come on. You know.”
No, I don’t. And I don’t want to know. You’re already a black beast without needing to drink that stuff.
Cordelia began to send him desperate looks, and Yuder responded with his own looks, conveying black-hearted replies.
And the three people watching them had their own reactions.
[I think I’ll need to focus on meditation for a while.]
[Lady Valencia, you’re not abandoning me, are you? Why don’t you play with me instead?]
Two of them tried their best to ignore the situation that seemed likely to continue for at least a week, and—
I should start thinking of a name for my new grandchild soon.
—Count Chase, who smiled with satisfaction.
However, their time of being lost in their own thoughts was short-lived. Today’s protagonist, no matter what anyone said, was the youngest daughter of the Bayer family.
The Wild God of the wind, with blue hair and green eyes.
The baby born with the advent of the angels was named Regina.
Regina Bayer.
