Chapter 4 – Equilibrium
“Is this the end, or the beginning?”
The voice resonated from the massive door, a deep, echoing sound that vibrated not just in my ears, but in my very core. This was no ordinary door; it was a manifestation of the Abyss’s will.
“Noah…” Yuri whispered, taking a step back, her voice a mix of fear and fascination. “Did that… did that door just speak?”
“I think so.” I gripped the compass, its needle still pointing towards the door, trembling faintly.
“But… how do we open it?” Yuri reached out hesitantly, then pulled back her hand.
“Careful,” I warned, stepping forward. The geometric patterns on the door’s surface shimmered, pulsing with an inner light, as if anticipating our next move.
I held the compass closer. The needle spun wildly, emitting a soft glow. The patterns on the door reacted, the light spreading across its surface like liquid fire, coalescing into a single, massive image.
“Noah, it’s doing something!”
I pressed the compass against the door. The light intensified, the patterns swirling and shifting, until finally, with a groan of ancient mechanisms, the door slowly began to open.
“What’s… in there?” Yuri pointed, her voice barely a whisper.
The scene beyond the doorway was both breathtaking and terrifying. On one side, a frozen wasteland stretched as far as the eye could see, ice pillars reaching towards a sky we couldn’t see, the air heavy with an oppressive cold. On the other, a raging inferno consumed the earth, flames licking at the very air, twisting and distorting the space around them. Ice and fire, coexisting in an impossible, paradoxical landscape.
“How… how can this be?” I murmured, checking the compass. The needle pointed steadily downwards. The direction was correct. We had no choice but to proceed.
“It’s another Trial,” I said grimly. “The Abyss wants to see how we handle this.”
Then I noticed it. Etched into the floor just beyond the doorway, a new pattern. Different from the others. An incomplete square.
“That pattern…I think it means something,” Yuri said, pointing.
I studied it, trying to decipher its meaning. Another puzzle from the Abyss.
“It’s… incomplete. Is it supposed to be like that? Or is something missing?” I muttered, quickly sketching the pattern in my notebook.
“Noah,” Yuri said, her voice tight with apprehension, shielding her face from the conflicting blasts of hot and cold air emanating from the doorway, “if we go in there… can we even survive? It’s too extreme.”
I surveyed the scene. There was no clear boundary between the ice and fire, just a chaotic, ever-shifting line of conflict.
“We have no choice,” I said firmly. “The compass points this way. The Abyss is leading us.”
The patterns on the door flared brightly, a voice echoing in my mind.
“Cold breath and burning flame. Walk the path you cannot choose. Remember, survival stems from decision.”
I paused, taking a deep breath. This wasn’t just a hallucination; it was a message, a warning.
“Noah? Did you hear that?” Yuri asked, her eyes wide with fear. “A voice…”
“I heard it. The Abyss is trying to tell us something. But we don’t have time to figure it out. We have to go in.”
I gripped the compass tightly. “Come on. This has to be the way to the fourth floor.”
We stepped through the doorway, into the heart of the paradox.
[Abyss – 4th Floor Entrance – 200m Underground]
“Cold breath and burning flame. You walk a path you cannot choose.”
The moment we crossed the threshold, a blast of frigid air slammed into us, stealing our breath. The cold seeped into our bones, numbing our skin.
“Noah, I… I can’t…” Yuri gasped, covering her face with her hands, her breath frosting in the air.
“We have to keep moving,” I said, my voice trembling, my body shivering uncontrollably. “We have to find the path.”
We took a few tentative steps forward. The air shifted abruptly, the biting cold replaced by an intense, searing heat. My frozen clothes instantly became damp, clinging to my skin.
“What the—?! First we freeze, now we burn?!” Yuri cried, her voice cracking. She fumbled with her jacket, then stopped, shivering as another wave of cold washed over us. “This is insane!”
I glanced at the compass. The needle pointed down, but its tip trembled, wavering slightly. The Abyss wasn’t just pointing the way down; it was pointing to something else.
“It’s not trying to kill us…” I said, studying the needle’s erratic movements. “It’s testing us. It wants… balance.”
“Balance?” Yuri scoffed, glaring at me. “You call this balance? Freezing to death or burning alive?”
“It means we can’t choose one or the other,” I said, pointing to the chaotic line where the ice met the fire. “We have to walk the boundary.”
“The boundary?! That’s even more dangerous!” Yuri cried, her voice laced with panic.
“Exactly. We have to choose.” I grabbed her hand, my voice firm. “If we pick one extreme, the Abyss will consume us. We have to find the equilibrium.”
We began to walk the narrow path between the ice and fire. The ground was icy cold beneath our feet, the heat of the flames licking at our skin.
“It’s… slippery,” Yuri whispered, her voice tight with fear. “If I fall…”
“I won’t let you fall.” I gripped her hand tighter. “Just trust me.”
The path was treacherous. Flames erupted sporadically, the ice cracked and groaned beneath our feet.
Suddenly, the ice gave way beneath Yuri.
“Noah!” she screamed, stumbling.
I yanked her back, pulling her against me, regaining our balance.
“Yuri! You okay?”
“It’s so cold… I can’t feel my feet…” She clung to my arm, tears welling in her eyes.
I forced myself to remain calm. “We can’t stop. We have to keep moving. Slowly. One step at a time.”
We pressed on. A wave of heat washed over us, searing my skin.
“It’s burning! I can’t! I can’t do this!” Yuri cried, pulling back.
“Yes, you can.” I shielded her with my body, taking the brunt of the heat. The flames retreated momentarily, then surged forward again, even stronger.
“How are we supposed to do this, Noah? This is impossible!”
I glanced at the compass. The needle held steady, pointing along the boundary.
“The Abyss isn’t giving us a choice, Yuri. This is about survival. It’s about understanding balance.”
“Balance, balance! That’s all you can say!” Yuri’s voice was thick with frustration and despair.
I took her hand, squeezing it gently. “Yuri… I’ll go first. Follow me.” I turned to her, forcing a smile. “We can’t find balance alone. It’s like a seesaw. You be my… my equilibrium.”
She stared at me, surprised, then blushed, looking down.
“Honestly… you’re the only one who could say that in this situation.” She sighed, then took a step forward. “Fine. Equilibrium. I’ll be your equilibrium. Just… don’t fall.”
“Don’t worry. I won’t let you go.”
We continued our slow, careful trek along the boundary, the ice groaning beneath our feet, the flames swirling above. I gripped the compass, the needle’s trembling growing fainter, steadier. Perhaps we were on the right track.
Suddenly, the stone beneath our feet began to glow. The incomplete square pattern illuminated our path.
“Noah…” Yuri whispered, staring at the glowing symbol.
“It’s acknowledging us,” I murmured, placing my hand on the pattern. A voice echoed in my mind.
“Between ice and fire, all is incomplete. Have you found the balance within?”
The words resonated with the weight of the Abyss itself. I closed my eyes, considering their meaning. The incomplete square… us?
I lifted my hand. The pattern pulsed with light, revealing a new path, leading away from the precarious boundary.
“Noah, we did it! We actually did it!” Yuri laughed, relief washing over her face.
“Not yet,” I said quietly, my gaze fixed on the path ahead, disappearing into the darkness.
We had learned the lesson of balance, but the Abyss had more trials in store for us. It was watching, always watching.
