Chapter 24: Killing is the answer

Killing is the answer
“Your mission is just one thing. To kill Deren or inflict a fatal wound on him in front of Rumi.”
Alex, who had recently become a member of the Inquisition, couldn’t hide his bewilderment as he watched the Vice Abbot calmly smiling in front of him.
Although he had been a member of the cult for a long time.
It was the first time he learned of the existence of such a blatant mission.
‘Why do we have to do such a thing?’
While he didn’t have a strong sense of justice.
That’s not to say I wanted to plunge someone into despair without knowing any reason.
So I was about to ask about it to resolve the question that arose for the first time in my life.
“Alec. Don’t step forward.”
My senior heresy inquisitor holds me back and continues speaking.
“There are places where you should step forward, and places where you should never step forward. Among them, you’re trying to step forward where you should never step forward.”
“… That’s.”
“Don’t harbor doubts, nor try to. That’s the basic quality you should have as a heresy inquisitor.”
“……”
The moment I heard to completely exclude my emotions, I felt a sense of helplessness and frustration.
But apart from that, I couldn’t utter a single word.
If I were to be stripped of my position as a heresy inquisitor, my family would have to bear the consequences entirely.
So, regardless of the reason, I decided to endure and go on, forcibly calming my mind.
The official priest approaches me slowly, looking at me intently.
I was tense, wondering if he was going to punish me for what I had said earlier, when.
“It’s okay. It’s natural to have doubts.”
Unexpectedly, he embraces my mistake and starts explaining everything one by one, as if gently admonishing a naive child.
“However, you shouldn’t spread such doubts to others. Because often, a casually thrown doubt can cause ripples.”
“……”
Those words made me want to ask even more questions, but I kept my mouth shut and stayed as quiet as possible.
It was a bit late, but I realized it would be better to accept the senior’s advice.
So, as I was just bowing my head and silently accepting these words, the Vice Abbot whispers one thing to me.
“I’m only telling this to Acolyte Alec, but the more unhappy she becomes, the happier this world can be made.”
One person’s misfortune makes the whole world happy? Is that possible?
Far from resolving doubts, they only intensified, but sensing that further questioning would negatively affect him, he kept his mouth shut.
If he asked any more, it would go beyond simply overstepping and cross a line.
So he just nodded as if he understood.
The Vice Abbot seemed satisfied and said,
“Then let’s depart. Everything is for the Heaven God.”
With those words, they headed towards the mountains near the Academy.
*
More than a dozen heresy inquisitors were deployed to catch just one person, along with several assistants to support them.
Although it seemed excessive, no one doubted the manpower invested.
‘Or rather, they seem to think it’s not enough.’
Alex was staring at those polishing the weapons provided by the Heaven God Cult when he heard that Rumi was coming from afar.
At those words, he put away the blades and armed himself with blunt weapons like wooden swords.
Rumi’s voice was gradually getting closer to this place.
“Um, excuse me, is this the right way? I think I might have taken a wrong turn.”
That anxious voice was identical to the one the cult had described.
The moment they were certain they had caught the right target.
All the heresy inquisitors simultaneously rushed out to attack Rumi.
“Ky, kyaaak!”
Following the Vice Abbot’s instructions not to kill and avoid excessive injuries.
They only kicked or struck with wooden swords in places that would cause great pain but not endanger her life.
Although it was called a plan, it was closer to a typical group assault, which caused a slight feeling of guilt.
But that was all.
Just as I was thinking that this level of sacrifice was natural for the sake of Heaven God, my family, and other believers, while moving my hands.
– Whoosh!
I saw Rumi release mana, pushing away those around her.
The senior heresy inquisitors seemed used to this and weren’t much affected.
But those with relatively less experience, like myself and my peers, ended up rolling on the ground, covered in mud.
‘… Damn it.’
I felt angry as my clothes got quite dirty due to Rumi’s unnecessary counterattack.
I started to feel emotional as the clothes I had received not long ago were ruined, which was quite irritating.
‘Until now, I was hitting her lightly because I felt a bit sorry for her.’
But since she counterattacked, there’s no need for that anymore.
‘Why does this bitch, who should be miserable, have to act up…’
Thinking that I don’t understand why she’s dirtying my clothes, I gritted my teeth.
I ran forward and started stomping hard on Rumi’s body lying in the mud.
With each stomp, stone fragments flew, adding more wounds to Rumi’s body.
Every time I saw these wounds, I felt a strange sense of pleasure and relief, gradually increasing the intensity.
Just then, I heard a voice from far away.
“Sa, save me. Save me!”
Save you? What does that mean?
The plan I had anticipated seemed to have gone awry, and as I looked to the side with a puzzled expression.
I could see one of the helpers, with both arms tattered, running towards this place while shedding tears.
‘What’s going on?’
Realizing something had gone wrong, I looked at the senior heresy inquisitor, who silently began to divide the team with gestures.
It seems to be for rescuing the helper who is currently escaping while dealing with the approaching Deren.
After confirming such orders, I moved forward, roughly brushing off the mud on my body.
‘That’s good.’
I was just feeling that Rumi alone wasn’t enough to vent my anger on.
Moreover, thinking that hitting a man would make me feel less guilty than hitting a woman, I drew out my blade.
* * * * *
I sneered at the Heaven God Cult members gathering around me.
It was because I thought they couldn’t escape what I had anticipated.
‘How pathetic.’
What were they planning to do if I hadn’t followed?
Thinking that they were short-sighted, I quickly scanned the people around me.
‘There are about a dozen combat personnel.’
Among them, five are running at the forefront.
As soon as I finished this assessment, I rushed forward and activated my magic.
‘Space Compression Magic.’
The magic that adorns the first part of the ancient magic book and forms the basis of all ancient magic.
I could use this magic to adjust the distance between the opponent and myself, but.
That aside, there was one more method.
‘It’s a way to quickly reduce the distance between the magic I cast and the opponent.’
To explain this more simply, it meant attaching teleportation to the magic.
I raised the corner of my mouth as I saw the lightning attribute magic being created and hitting the head of the man in front at the same time.
From the looks of it, he couldn’t even react, let alone block it.
At this result, the Heaven God Cult members around seemed flustered and looked at each other.
But there must have been some experts mixed in, as a few quickly assessed the situation and turned their attention to me.
Looking at them, I recalled what I had seen earlier.
‘They were clearly trying to save their comrade.’
Considering that the attacking group and the rescue team moved separately, they seemed to be a group that cared a lot about their comrades.
The moment I realized this, I released mana towards the guy next to me and threw my mace forward.
‘Normally, the mace wouldn’t reach that distance due to its weight.’
But if I cut the space between the enemy and the mace, it would be within reach.
As I watched the mace embed itself in the face of the man who was standing still and releasing a barrier to block my mana,
I quickly used teleportation above his body and trampled him.
“Aaaaargh!”
A scream echoed.
I surveyed the situation while listening to that scream.
It was necessary to keep an eye on those who didn’t panic even in this situation.
‘There are about three of those guys.’
I decided to remember these three well as I prepared to use magic for my next goal.
In the distance, I could see Rumi lying face down on the ground, covered in mud.
‘……’
Without being told, I could roughly guess what the situation was.
As soon as I saw this, I felt a bitter laugh escaping me, and I swung my mace down at the one beneath my feet.
The sound of flesh being torn apart by metal.
When I let that incredibly cruel sound be heard around me, no one even dared to think of approaching me.
I looked at them and slowly wiped the blood off my face.
‘I had planned to take hostages without killing if possible.’
But I changed my mind.
I decided to just kill everyone except for one.
I hardened my expression and manifested my mana.
All sorts of modified magic formulas that I had poured all my time into creating since possessing this body.
Electric magic far more powerful than anything written in books enveloped the surroundings.
Using this magic, I electrocuted everyone around me simultaneously and said.
“If you don’t come, I’ll go to you.”
At those words, a few finally seemed to come to their senses and tried to manifest magic.
But in situations where there’s emotional turmoil, it’s easiest to take ownership of their magic.
So the moment their spells were completed, I simply burst them, instantly neutralizing the Heaven God Cult’s magicians.
“Kyaaah!”
“P-please spare me!”
The air is filled with screams as people burn or freeze all around.
I ran towards the man who was trembling and staring at me, ignoring the others in their current state.
“Alec! Be careful!”
A large figure nearby shouted a warning.
But I reached the man first, closing in on him.
In less time than it takes to blink.
I stood before him, striking his shin with my mace.
Then I used my knee to smash his face as he slowly fell.
A loud crunching sound spread as his nose collapsed.
I used an electric spell to ensure he was dead, as he showed no reaction, possibly unconscious.
Then I slowly looked around to gauge the reactions of those nearby.
Some were wailing in pain, some mourning their dead comrades, others looking for a chance to turn the tables.
I could see their eyes focused on me, filled with various negative emotions.
I deliberately sneered at them to provoke even more emotional turmoil as I spoke.
“It felt like this when I killed Ariel too.”
Though I hadn’t actually killed her yet, I spread this lie.
I saw one of them flinch and glare at me intensely.
‘If he’s close enough to the torture specialist… he must have some information for sure.’
That means I only need to keep that one alive.
Having made this decision, I prepared to deal with all the others.
I stomped on the head of the man below, driving it deep into the mud.
