The Adopted Son of House Skyroad

The Adopted Son of House Skyroad

In the eastern Arcan Empire, there were three ducal houses.

House Skyroad, House Arsein, and House Lurain.

Among them, House Skyroad had only a single daughter, but they caused quite a stir by adopting a son.

Rumors circulated about the adopted son of unknown true identity, ranging from claims that he was the Duke of Skyroad’s illegitimate child to stories that he was a distant relative, but the real truth remained unknown.

However, a few facts were certain.

When he appeared in high society alongside the daughter of House Skyroad, he seemed to be on extremely close terms with her, and he clearly enjoyed the deep trust and affection of House Skyroad.

With his slightly tousled blonde hair, fair skin, tall stature, and subtly trained physique, he was handsome enough to stir the hearts of countless women just by his appearance, and he was exceptional in ability.

He was a genius in both swordsmanship and magic to the point where he had no equal, and there were even rumors that he was so talented in cooking that all the recipes for the social parties held by House Skyroad came from his mind.

And now, the Duke of Arsein was meeting this rumored adopted son of House Skyroad.

“Do you know why I invited you?”

The Duke of Arsein asked in a calm tone as he looked at the young man who had come at his invitation.

    “Because of the engagement matter?”

The handsome young man, now 21 years old, asked with a gentle smile that seemed somewhat sly and unfathomable. The Duke of Arsein felt as if he were dealing with a seasoned, cunning nobleman.

“Theodore Skyroad. That’s part of it, but it’s also because you and my daughter will be going to the Britannia Empire this year as you both become second-year students.”

    Theodore smiled at those words.

“Because we were selected as scholarship students, right? Don’t worry, I’ll go to the Britannia Empire and show them how excellent a person I am, and demonstrate the dignity of the Arcan Empire that has such exceptional people as myself.”

“No, that’s part of it, but more importantly, it’s about my daughter. I called you here because of my daughter, Yuria.”

At the Duke of Arsein’s words, Theodore folded his arms and nodded.

“I see. So it’s about my fiancée, who is also famous at the academy.”

Looking at Theodore’s face as he spoke with a smirk, the Duke of Arsein found him quite irritating.

He knew well how Theodore conducted himself at the academy.

He had gathered numerous followers, and it was well-known that the majority of them were women.

Since there were no rumors linking him romantically with any woman, and he didn’t behave inappropriately, this was tolerated, but as a father with a daughter, the Duke didn’t approve of his behavior.

However, his abilities were genuine, and he proudly held the top position at Jeiha Academy, the premier academy in the Arcan Empire. For reference, his daughter, the eldest daughter of House Arsein, Yuria, was ranked second overall behind him.

“I’ve heard that you don’t interact much with my daughter at the academy.”

“How could that be? I sincerely wish to become close with Lady Yuria. I always treat my fiancée with the utmost courtesy and do my best for her. It’s just that I’m such an excellent man that Lady Yuria finds me a bit intimidating.”

“…Do you not understand why so many male students hold grudges against you?”

“That’s obviously due to competitive psychology. Men naturally aim for higher places. It’s merely the lamentation of those walking on the ground, envying me who walks in the sky.”

The Duke of Arsein felt that if he continued this conversation, his blood pressure might rise.

While the young man was popular enough to have followers due to his handsome appearance, good background, exceptional abilities, and courteous behavior toward women, from the perspective of a father with a daughter or just as a man, the Duke felt he would feel better if he could land a punch on that smug face.

Unfortunately, the young man before him was unbelievably strong for his age, to the point where even the Duke of Arsein, famous as an excellent swordsman, had little chance of winning against him.

“If you go to the Britannia Empire this time, I cannot guarantee my daughter’s safety. In particular, there will be many who might try to kidnap her for ransom, and among the nobles of other countries, there will be those who harbor impure desires for my daughter’s beauty. Can you protect my daughter from such people as her fiancé?”

At the Duke of Arsein’s question, Theodore smirked and replied:

“That’s a foolish question. As long as she and I are engaged, I will consider her life as my own and protect her. Since I am a special person who must survive for the sake of this world, she occupies an equally special position, so there is no need to worry.”

The Duke of Arsein was relieved by Theodore’s answer.

Although this fellow who looked like a parasite playboy was annoying, his skills were undeniable, and he wasn’t the type to break his word.

“Very well, then I can trust you with this?”

“Again, a foolish question. I’ve already said there’s no need to worry.”

The Duke of Arsein nodded at Theodore’s words.

“Yes, I admit this was a foolish question. Well then, I’ll leave it to you. And will you be seeing my daughter before you leave?”

“A chance to meet the greatest beauty in the Arcan Empire? I couldn’t refuse.”

Though he expressed acceptance and praised Yuria’s beauty, the smile on his face didn’t seem to hold any deep meaning.

Having seen many people over the years, the Duke of Arsein could discern the mask hidden behind that smile.

‘He’s just being courteous because they’re engaged, nothing more?’

From what the Duke of Arsein could see, Theodore appeared to have no feelings whatsoever for his daughter Yuria.

No, that wasn’t quite right. He probably did have some feelings.

He likely had a certain degree of fondness for her as his fiancée, but nothing beyond that.

If their engagement were to be broken, he would likely say, “So we’re strangers now,” without any hesitation and lose all interest in her.

But at least while their engagement continued, he wouldn’t do anything immoral that would violate that relationship, and he would do his best to protect her as his fiancée.

“I believe she is at the training ground now, so I’ll head there.”

“…Very well, I’ll stay here, so have a good talk, just the two of you.”

“Are you suggesting we have a nice time as a young couple? I acknowledge that my fiancée’s beauty is worthy of praise, and I can’t deny that she herself is a good woman. However, I fear that if she enters into a relationship too early before becoming accustomed to a man like me who shines like the sun, her light will be enveloped by mine.”

“Stop saying such nonsense, just go and talk to her properly about going to the Britannia Empire! Why are you taking it that far!”

“My, I was under the impression that she was already pleased about going to the Britannia Empire?”

“Yes, she’s eager for it. She’s determined to prove her excellence even in a foreign country without the backing of House Arsein, to demonstrate her superiority. And because of this issue, she’s had a huge fight with my wife, and now I’m caught in the middle, feeling miserable.”

“So it’s the tragedy of a man who loves his wife and daughter too much. You are an excellent husband and father.”

It was clearly a compliment, but somehow it felt like mockery, which irritated the Duke.

However, knowing that throwing a punch would only result in being subdued, the Duke of Arsein restrained himself and said:

“Yes, well then, you should go.”

    “Yes, I’ll see you later.”

Watching him leave after giving his farewell, the Duke of Arsein let out a sigh.

“Haa, his abilities are certain, but is someone like him really… going to be the one to accomplish such a great task?”

Yuria was the eldest daughter of House Arsein.

As the eldest daughter of House Arsein, one of the three great ducal families of the Arcan Empire, and true to her family’s reputation for producing outstanding knights, she was, as always, practicing with a sword.

    “Huff~ Huff~”

Training until her entire body was drenched in sweat, she wore black leather hot pants and a white t-shirt, which was becoming soaked with her perspiration.

But her t-shirt, being made by House Arsein, was a simple yet expensive garment with magical treatment that ensured durability and prevented her skin from showing through, so her flesh wasn’t revealed despite the sweat-soaked clothing.

Objectively speaking, Yuria was truly a dazzling beauty.

With beautiful silver hair grown to her waist as if melted from the finest silver, gem-like blue eyes, skin like white jade, and a perfect figure with a generous bosom, shapely hips, and a slender waist, she was a woman with flawless beauty and physique.

Now 21 years old and becoming a second-year student at Jeiha Academy, she was frustrated that she received attention for things other than her abilities.

‘Why don’t they recognize my efforts?’
