    ◇◇◇◆◇◇◇

A dim monitor’s light illuminated one wall of the dark room.

Surrounded by scattered books, memos and empty cups, I tapped at the keyboard.

On the screen, a man lay dead.

Many rejoiced at his demise, but I let out a sigh.

“Such a waste, truly a waste.”

A mix of lingering attachment and emptiness colored my deep breath.

My shoulders slumped, defeated by the answers I couldn’t find no matter how hard I searched.

“Is there truly no other way?”

My complaints stemmed from the sorrow I felt over his death.

Arnold, the villain in the game [Saint Academy].

He was a product of a tragedy created by society.

    Why?

He was hated simply for being born to wicked parents.

He hadn’t lived a particularly bad life.

On the contrary, he tried to prove himself by doing good deeds, but instead of acknowledging his virtuous acts, people pushed him further with even harsher gazes.

It was as if his entire being was denied solely because he was the “son of a criminal.”

What was the developer’s intention in creating such a character?

If they wanted a complete villain, they could have just made him purely evil.

If they wanted a character with a story, they should have given him a chance at redemption.

    But Arnold was neither.

In every ending, he met a tragic end, either by death or disappearance.

It was once a hot topic in the community.

Complaints and criticisms such as “What were they trying to show by making this character?” were endless.

    “Poor Arnold…”

And I was one of them.

In the end, Arnold couldn’t bear the unjust treatment and his mind broke.

He succumbed to the devil’s whispers, agreeing to become a true monster and appearing as a boss in the latter half of the game.

But even then, he was used as a mere pawn and killed miserably by the protagonists.

    It was truly sigh-inducing.

Despite living a decent life while being misunderstood, a single misstep branded him as an eternal villain in people’s memories.

‘If I were Arnold, how would I have lived?’

The thought suddenly crossed my mind.

    “Haah.”

I rubbed my forehead with a tired hand.

The monitor remained on, I closed my eyes and let go of my consciousness.

It was the aftereffect of spending all night playing the game.

Just before falling asleep, a faint light momentarily flashed across my eyelids.

That was the last memory I had.
