Ch.38Raising an Empress (1)
by fnovelpia
And just as I was thinking this.
A quest window appeared before my eyes, glimmering after a long time.

<Quest>
<For the Future Pirate Empress!>
<Through a series of coincidences, you’ve acquired someone who could become the future Pirate Empress.>
<Like an unscratched lottery ticket, care for and nurture her to ensure you receive definite rewards in the future!>
<Objective: Achieve level 50 with ‘Mary Ann’, reach minimum friendship threshold>
<Reward: Additional friendship increase with the future ‘Pirate Empress’, increased probability of positive reactions in certain events>
—————————————-
‘So I was right after all.’
Thanks to the quest window appearing at the perfect timing, I felt my overflowing confidence starting to crumble.
Now that the status window firmly confirmed it, there was no room for doubt.
So from the moment the quest appeared.
I decided to put my full-fledged Pirate Empress (Seed) development plan into action.
==========
So what should I do?
Our goal is, when she escapes and returns later.
Along with the fact that she’s an SSS-rank command-type mid-range unit, truly aristocratic in her rarity.
And by operating a separate fleet that doesn’t consume the user’s fleet points, effectively boosting the user’s power.
To obtain the ‘Pirate Empress’ who is an essential support character for solo players like me who don’t seek or can’t find alliances.
I needed to enter full affection mode for ‘Mary Ann’, the Pirate Empress (Seed).
After all, to achieve Mary Ann=Marian’s good ending(?), if I don’t manage her intensively from now on.
Even the slightest difference could lead to the dreaded Normal(?) Ending 2.
Of course, some newbies from other games often said things like, “Can’t you just check the friendship level visually and judge from there?”
But the problem was that this damn game would never, ever show the exact friendship gauge to users – how much it increased or how much had accumulated.
At best, as friendship increases, the character’s attitude and way of speaking toward the Commander changes.
So you can make some guesses based on that.
“Jessica, if you had to score her friendship level right now, what would it be?”
“…Even if you ask me, I don’t have anything to tell you about that.”
“I trust you, so tell me.”
“Commander, no matter how much you want a shortcut… what’s impossible is impossible.”
“Tsk.”
“Besides, there are people whose accumulated friendship doesn’t show on the outside.”
Just as Jessica explained, there were limitations to this approach.
So whether I liked it or not, until the day ‘Mary Ann’ escapes.
I had no choice but to shower her with affection, going “puni puni refu.”
=========
But that didn’t mean we could only show affection to ‘Mary Ann=Marian’.
It’s common sense, but if I suddenly start showing special affection to a newly recruited character.
After treating everyone equally until now, how would the others react?
‘Oh crap.’
Although it’s been 3 years since I quit the game and my memory isn’t perfect.
As evident from the criteria for Marian’s bad ending, this damn game also checks how much attention the user pays to all characters.
If I’m not careful, other characters might become jealous just because I’m showing special affection to the new girl.
Actually, this was quite common among users even before I quit.
Even looking at the community forum now…

Title: WTF why are these women suddenly fighting each other
Author: Anonymous
Content: [Superhumans fighting inside the base 1], [Superhumans fighting inside the base 2]
[Unnecessarily dynamic video]
Suddenly they’re pulling each other’s hair saying stuff like “if you weren’t here, the Commander would…” etc.
They keep fighting even when I tell them to stop, what am I supposed to do?
I want to break it up, but if I get between them I’ll be turned into ground meat

If you don’t manage friendship properly and show obvious favoritism, catfights break out due to jealousy.

…I have no idea how that’s even possible.
There’s a commander filming a real-time yandere horror show with characters who are fundamentally programmed to be absolutely loyal to their commander.
Realizing I had to manage friendship and affection levels too, I couldn’t help but shake my head.
“So I need to treat everyone equally while continuously boosting Merry’s friendship and giving her special treatment.”
“That’s not easy. If anyone could do it… incidents like we just saw wouldn’t happen.”
Even Jessica, who was reading the community posts with me, acknowledged how difficult my task was.
Managing friendship levels where I had no idea how much had accumulated or how much more I needed to reach the first stage.
And using that to achieve a late-game return – I realized how incredibly challenging this was.
‘Ah, so that’s why they offer rewards through quests.’
I came to understand that nothing in life comes easy, and great rewards require proportional labor.
==========
Anyway, after all that drama.
I continued to contemplate how to utilize Merry going forward.
But that contemplation didn’t last long.

<Quest>
<First Steps, Slow and Steady!>
<Mary Ann, who hasn’t evolved into the Pirate Empress yet, is barely an A-rank character!>
<Even that is inflated due to her S+ magic defense.>
<Keep in mind that most of her stats are below average for B-rank, let alone A-rank!>
<Rather than deploying her in battle from the start, how about training her first?>
<Objective: Complete 10 training sessions with Mary Ann>

‘Oh.’
As expected of a named NPC, seeing a properly structured curriculum made me sigh with relief.
