Chapter Index

    The next day.

    After hearing that some users who ignored the announcement and continued to receive “their self-determined” amounts had their resources forcibly reclaimed by the administrators.

    As they say, when you’re busy, take the long way around, and even when crossing a stone bridge, tap it first to check its stability.

    After getting a good night’s sleep to calm yesterday’s confusion, I felt my mind becoming much clearer.

    And with this clarity, the first thing I decided to do was…

    <Base Buff: Activated>

    <Base Mercenary Corps: Currently Not Hired>

    —————————————-

    “Finally, the time has come to hire a mercenary corps for this Tannhäuser base, Jessica.”

    “Drum roll, please.”

    Since new forces are always welcome.

    I started spinning the base mercenary corps gacha(?) with an excited heart, wondering which friends would appear this time.

    Of course, as soon as I saw the gacha starting to spin, I momentarily worried about what would happen if it turned out terribly…

    But that thought didn’t last long.

    ‘Wait… thinking about it, as long as it’s not just filled with small ships, there shouldn’t be much of a problem, right?’

    After careful consideration, my fleet’s firepower was already among the top tier of users, no exaggeration.

    Unlike before, I wasn’t limited to just regular-grade ships except for that somewhat peculiar Kraken.

    With super high-firepower ships like Ouroboros and Hresvelgr firmly in place, my fleet could be considered sufficiently powerful in many ways.

    Anyway, for these reasons, I decided to take a lighter approach.

    For this base mercenary corps, I just hoped for something average, regardless of what came out.

    <Tannhäuser Gateway Fortress Base Mercenary Corps Hiring Menu>

    <When hiring a mercenary corps, the fleet composition is as follows:>

    <Base level x100 points>

    <Current base level: 7>

    <The mercenary corps’ fleet will be matched to ‘700 points’.>

    <Commander: ???>

    <A random commander will be assigned when you hire the mercenary corps.>

    <Note that the mercenary corps commander may or may not be a Superhuman.>

    … … … … … …

    —————————————–

    And a moment later.

    With Jessica making drum sounds beside me to heighten the tension, I proceeded with hiring the mercenary corps and its commander.

    And within just a few minutes.

    -Whoosh!

    “Oh, Commander! A large number of ships are warping toward us from the front!”

    “Oh.”

    Looking at the “Lemmings Assault Team,” the Tannhäuser base mercenary corps I hired by manipulating the status menu.

    I could feel both genuine amazement and negative amazement erupting simultaneously.

    And for good reason, as the fleet composition of this “Lemmings Assault Team” I got from the gacha…

    From my perspective, it had a composition that far exceeded my expectations.

    <Lemmings Assault Team>

    <Fleet Composition>

    <Electronic Warfare Cruiser 1, Light Cruisers 3, Assault Ships 672>

    <Commander: Bendalof>

    —————————————-

    “What the heck?”

    “That’s incredible, 672 small ships.”

    How is this any different from the “500 Suicide Squad” patrol ship spam that users made fun of when the base update was first implemented?

    ‘What kind of nonsense is this, damn system.’

    Thanks to this, I felt my anger rising rapidly…

    But that didn’t last long.

    “Greetings, Commander Icarus!”

    “Oh, hello.”

    I saw a fairly tall male character… no, wait.

    An alien mercenary leader named “Bendalof” with peculiarly shaped horns and a thick, long tail that he was swishing around.

    As he greeted me with an extremely cheerful attitude, I felt my rising emotions gradually subsiding.

    ‘How can I spit in the face of someone who’s smiling?’

    Of course, no matter how cheerful and smiling someone might be toward me.

    Given the situation, I might have unconsciously shown my irritation…

    Surprisingly, Bendalof’s performance was excellent enough to outclass not only the upper-middle ranks of SS-grade.

    But even the top ranks of SS-grade.

    “Welcome, Bendalof!”

    “It’s an honor, Commander.”

    ‘Who cares if the fleet is a bit subpar when it comes with such an outstanding commander?’

    Along with Leonard, I decided to express an appropriate level of welcome to one of the few “normal” male characters at our base.

    ==========

    After finishing the welcoming ceremony for Bendalof and his fleet.

    As he walked out of the command center, saying he was returning to his fleet…

    “By the way, Commander, what exactly are these ‘assault ships’?”

    “Huh? Oh… good question.”

    Hearing Jessica’s words, I realized that I had initially thought they were similar in size to patrol ships.

    But now that I looked more carefully, the shape and overall appearance of these “assault ships” that Bendalof brought seemed quite different from typical patrol ships.

    The problem was that even I found myself wondering what these ships were actually for…

    As a result, Jessica and I spent time pondering together about what these ships were actually meant to do.

    After a long time (2 minutes) of deep contemplation.

    “Let’s just check the gallery wiki tab.”

    “Okay.”

    Thinking about it, I realized it would be better to just browse the wiki tab rather than keep pondering.

    I opened the community window… and as always, deleted a large number of accumulated inappropriate content reports.

    After issuing 1-day bans to some troublemakers, I immediately opened the gallery wiki tab to look up information about “assault ships.”

    Perhaps because it had been nearly 3 years since everyone had been transported here.

    <A total of 15,265 search results found.>

    —————————————-

    ‘My goodness, there’s so many.’

    Unlike before, the wiki tab had become quite abundant in content.

    I had to filter out unnecessary duplicate materials and entries that were just using the term as a “title” before I could find the post I wanted.

    And after finding the article about “assault ships”…

    Title: Setting explanation about the ship class called Assault Ships.txt

    Author: Wiki Historian mk-26

    Content: [‘Chess-class Assault Ship’ concept art.jpg]

    Cutting straight to the point without unnecessary talk

    You know those assault-type small monster ships that monsters use?

    They’re similar to those

    Except that small monster ships are actually used to “ram into” targets to infiltrate assault troops inside, so apart from frontal armor and speed, the rest is just at bug level

    Assault ships get up close not for assault troops but to deliver super powerful quantum depth charges at extremely close range for burst damage

    Kind of like a larger, more beautiful shotgun missile?

    Anyway, the important thing is that despite being small ships, they’re heavily armed while maintaining mobility

    So their durability is really at the level of carrier-based aircraft rather than actual ships

    So if you just rely on firepower and charge in, you’ll see them melt away like level 1 carrier aircraft

    And this is a special characteristic: due to their structure, they always appear in “squadron” units when they come out in gacha

    They’re one of the rare cases where “multiple ships appear simultaneously” in gacha

    Comments

    -[So they’re basically kamikaze units?]

    -˪[Aaack, no they’re not](Author)

    -[Close-range burst damage with paper armor, this is super appealing]

    -[Upvoting for the information]

    —————————————–

    “So that’s what they are.”

    “I see.”

    In summary, they’re extremely fast glass cannons, which made me wonder why I always seem to get such unusual units.
