Ch.35Chapter 35 – The Mechanic Enrolls in the Academy (3)
by fnovelpia
Shannon led me up to the upper floor of the dormitory, guiding me to a room located at the very edge.
She pulled out something like a bracelet from her bosom and held it against the doorknob. With a sound of the lock disengaging, the door opened automatically.
“Here is the dormitory room where you’ll be staying from now on, Lord Pathos.”
“Hmm.”
Shannon entered through the automatically opened door, and as I followed her inside, I was greeted by an utterly ordinary-looking room.
An old desk and chair attached to the wall. And behind them, a slightly worn bed.
Then there was a wardrobe with one door completely shattered and about to fall off. Even the bathroom and toilet had a door half torn away, exposing the interior clearly.
In short, it was a room that could hardly be considered suitable for a noble.
“Ahaha…”
“The room has quite an artistic quality to it.”
“W-well, there’s actually a story behind this…”
Shannon gave an awkward smile as she began explaining about the room.
“This room was previously assigned to a student who enrolled last year—a young noble with the worst personality and most delinquent behavior. We had placed fairly decent furniture here, but that student caused a commotion demanding more luxurious furnishings.”
Hmm, I wonder if giving in to a delinquent’s demands only made him more arrogant, leading to excessive requests.
“And that was just the beginning. He assaulted staff members, caused discord among students, and deliberately went to where commoner students gathered to cause trouble…”
“Was such behavior tolerated because he was a noble?”
“Of course not. Most nobles don’t want to create conflicts by deliberately clashing with commoners. The delinquent who owned this room was simply… unusual.”
“What happened to him?”
I asked Shannon about the fate of the noble delinquent who had previously owned this room.
“That troublemaker? He was always arrogant and disrespectful. But he made the mistake of physically assaulting the Prime Minister’s granddaughter, which led the Prime Minister to send an ultimatum to his family: either the family would take responsibility for his crimes, or they would execute him.”
I could guess the outcome without being told.
Since he had laid hands on the granddaughter of the Prime Minister—the second most powerful person in the Empire—the delinquent’s family must have abandoned him to save themselves.
“Well, I think you can guess the conclusion, Lord Pathos. After assaulting the Prime Minister’s granddaughter, all his connections were severed. Additionally, he was caught using illegal substances prohibited by imperial law, and ultimately faced execution.”
So the previous occupant of this room had been executed and departed from this world.
Hearing about his involvement with illegal substances, I suspected that the room’s previous owner might not have been mentally stable.
Perhaps his mental instability led him to trash the room like this.
Or maybe he had already been using substances before enrolling.
Well, it’s all speculation about someone who’s no longer in this world.
“But why is the furniture still in such a neglected state?”
“Oh, this? All of it will be replaced with new items by the end of today. We’ve ordered some of the finest quality furniture in the Empire…”
I could hear Shannon explaining something, but I wasn’t paying attention to her explanation.
Why? Because I was already planning to fix all these worn-out pieces of furniture myself.
Honestly, I’d prefer new furniture over old ones too.
But since I have the ability to fix them, why should I wait for new furniture to arrive?
‘Instead of waiting, I might as well fix all the furniture and do something else with my time.’
Having decided to repair the furniture, I called out to Shannon.
“Secretary Shannon.”
“…and so our academy—yes?”
“Do you happen to have a hammer in the academy? Or could you tell me where I might find one?”
I asked Shannon where I could find a hammer within the academy.
“A hammer should be available in the staff lounges located on each floor. Oh, could it be…?”
I nodded to confirm her suspicion.
“Then would you mind waiting a moment? I’ll go get a hammer for you.”
“It needs to be a hammer with a metal head.”
I gave Shannon this instruction as she went to find a hammer.
And shortly after…
“Haa, haa. Is this what you need?”
Shannon handed me a suitably sized metal hammer.
Judging by her heavy breathing, she must have run quite a distance.
“Take a moment to catch your breath.”
With the metal hammer Shannon gave me, I first repaired the chair.
This time, instead of striking downward, I swung the hammer three times as if hitting the headmaster’s head.
Of course, the deteriorating old chair was enveloped in a faint glow and quickly transformed into a new chair.
“Ah, thank you.”
Shannon sat down on the chair I had fixed. Instead of a thud, I heard a soft “poof!” sound, suggesting the chair had become quite plush.
Riding this momentum, I swung the hammer three times each at the desk, wardrobe, bed, and bathroom/toilet door.
“It’s truly… even though I’m seeing it with my own eyes, it’s still an unbelievably amazing ability.”
Shannon was visibly impressed as she watched the furniture transform, enveloped in light with each swing of my hammer.
Encouraged by Shannon’s amazement, I tried tapping the dormitory floor with the hammer.
Precisely the floor of my dormitory room was enveloped in light and transformed into a smooth wooden floor.
Previously, it had been a wooden floor that looked like it might pierce you with splinters if you walked on it.
“…Could you perhaps fix the furniture in my room too?”
“Pardon?”
“Nothing. Never mind.”
Shannon seemed to have asked me for something, but I couldn’t hear clearly. When I asked again, she said it was nothing.
Well, if she says it’s nothing, I suppose it’s fine?
Having fixed the floor, I proceeded to tap the ceiling, lamps, walls, and all the fixtures in the bathroom and toilet with the hammer.
The only difference from before was that now, as I tapped with the hammer, I was wishing for a more comfortable living environment.
As I continued working, my hammer tapped everything in the dormitory room three times each, and the results were now displayed before my eyes.
“…I doubt any student in our academy lives in a better room than yours now, Lord Pathos.”
“Hmm, did I go too far?”
This room, once filled with broken and worn furniture, had been completely transformed by my ability, with everything becoming brand new.
And there was something unexpected too…
“The chair is much more comfortable than the original, and the bed is so plush too. This is honestly better than what I have in my own room!”
According to Shannon’s assessment, the furniture I had repaired was far more comfortable and better than what had been there originally.
“Is that so?”
“Oh, absolutely. This is genuinely high quality, believe me!”
Shannon seemed very pleased with the chair I had fixed.
Perhaps I should fix Shannon’s chair later when I have time?
It would be beneficial for me to make as many allies as possible.
“Would you like me to fix your chair later, Secretary Shannon?”
“Really? You’ll really fix it for me?”
“Yes, well. Not right now, but when I have some time later.”
“You must! You absolutely must fix it! A man’s word is his bond!”
Shannon was overjoyed when I offered to fix her chair.
What’s this? Is this something to be so happy about?
I didn’t understand Shannon’s reaction, but since it wasn’t something I needed to know, I decided to let it go.
Anyway, the room at the very edge of the 7th floor of the nobles’ dormitory had become my room.
From now on, I would be staying here while attending classes at Glesius Academy.
“First, please take this bracelet. It serves as both your room key and student ID. It’s essentially your identification.”
Shannon removed the bracelet she had used to open the door and handed it to me.
Suddenly, something like an internet window appeared before me.
“Oh? What’s this?”
“Because Glesius Academy has so many enrolled students, we’ve incorporated magitech to create a new system for efficient student management. What you’re seeing is the ‘Student Management Window.'”
Student Management Window. It looked similar to the status windows that appear in novels set in game worlds.
Unlike a status window, however, this only showed what grade I was in and what classes I needed to take.
Oh, and it also had a function for exchanging messages with others.
“Additionally, it contains maps of the academy and its surroundings, locations of various facilities, and information about academy facilities available to students. I recommend familiarizing yourself with at least the essential information, if not all of it.”
Having finished her explanation, Shannon closed the door and disappeared from my sight.
I lay down on the bed and stared at the ceiling.
Now, my life at the academy truly begins.
Will I be able to graduate from the academy safely?
I’m worried and a bit afraid, but thinking of it as attending university one more time somehow puts my mind at ease.
Right. It’s not like I’ve joined the military; I’ve just come to a place similar to a school. I’ll just consider it another round of university life.
“Hmm?”
—You have received a message from the Headmaster.
As I was rolling around on the bed, a notification appeared before my eyes, informing me that a message had arrived from the Headmaster.
