Ch.300300. Then Are You Helpful to My Life?
by fnovelpia
“····For now, I’ll depart tomorrow. And····”
I tucked the paper received from Robert into my sleeve and continued.
“I have a few questions. When I met you, Robert, I immediately sensed that you were a dragon.”
“Ah····you mean the dragon’s aura?”
“Yes. When Headmaster Rupert first called Lucien a dragon, I didn’t understand, but after seeing you, I knew exactly what he meant.”
“That makes sense. Dragons emit a different aura than humans.”
He adjusted his posture and put on a serious expression.
“Is it possible to conceal a dragon’s aura?”
“A dragon’s aura?”
“Yes. Lucien grew up in my care and trusts humans greatly, but what if bad people intentionally approach him after identifying him as a dragon?”
“Ah····so that’s your concern.”
“Am I being strange?”
As I tilted my head in confusion, Robert’s expression turned flustered.
“As a father with a daughter myself, I completely understand your feelings, Lord Selden Alphonse. And yes, it is certainly possible to conceal a dragon’s aura.”
“····What?”
“You ask and then act surprised?”
“I didn’t think there would be a way to erase a dragon’s aura.”
“Why not?”
“Because if there were, you would have hidden your own dragon aura.”
At that, Robert let out a gentle laugh.
“There are two reasons for that.”
“Two reasons?”
“First, I didn’t hide it because there was no need to.”
“What do you mean?”
“There are no dragons that would harm humans.”
“Ah····”
“However, after meeting you, Lord Selden Alphonse, my thinking has changed. I realized for the first time that there are humans who can surpass a dragon’s power.”
I scratched my head with an embarrassed expression.
“It’s not that significant.”
“····And the second reason is that someone who can sense a dragon’s aura cannot be a bad person.”
“What does that mean?”
“Only those who can emotionally connect with dragons can sense their aura.”
“Ah····”
“In other words, someone with ill intentions wouldn’t be able to sense a dragon’s gentle aura. This is also something I discovered through research with Kabla.”
Research on interactions between dragons and humans····
It felt like creating something from nothing, which made it seem even more impressive.
“May I ask one more question?”
Robert responded to my query with an interested expression.
“Go ahead.”
“Just as there are good humans, aren’t there also bad humans?”
“Hmm, are you wondering if there are bad dragons as well?”
“You catch on quickly.”
“Even if there are bad dragons, none of them would want to interfere with the human world.”
“Why not?”
Robert made a slightly troubled expression before continuing.
“If you dig in the ground outside, you’ll find insects called ants, right?”
“A-ants? Yes, there are.”
“Are there humans who want to torment ants?”
“So you’re saying that to dragons, humans are like ants?”
“I may have explained it in a way that could offend you, but dragons have absolutely no interest in human politics or power.”
I let out a short sigh.
“But you know what? There are humans who do want to torment ants.”
“····Is that so?”
“Especially humans who regard life as trivial tend to have such inclinations.”
“Hmm····perhaps it’s because I haven’t yet encountered the ‘bad dragons’ you speak of, Lord Selden Alphonse. However, if such a situation arises, I can certainly help you. I’m surrounded only by ‘good dragons.'”
Despite Robert’s words, I couldn’t feel at ease.
I became firmly resolved to continue my training diligently.
After all, this world could be destroyed by ‘bad dragons’ while I’m living my comfortable life.
Of course, if things follow the original story, nothing major should happen until Serion Lycus defeats the final villain.
Though my mind was already filled with worry, I put on a smile.
“Haha! If bad dragons appear, we might need to rely on our Lucien.”
“By then, Lord Selden Alphonse, you will have become even stronger.”
Tomorrow I would have to embark on another long journey to retrieve Robert’s research materials.
Having asked most of my questions, I rose from the sofa to retire early.
“Then I’ll see you when I return.”
*
“····Young master, you really don’t contribute anything positive to my life.”
It had been a week of non-stop carriage travel to retrieve the research materials.
The distance was farther than expected, and I was already irritated as I looked at Jawil Wilson.
“And do you contribute anything to mine?”
“I-if I’m not helpful, why did you bring me along?”
“Meat shield.”
“····What?”
“Arrow catcher.”
“····That’s too harsh.”
I spoke while looking at the constantly changing scenery through the carriage window.
“You seem disappointed that we didn’t bring Clara along, but we can’t keep taking the Guardian Captain everywhere, can we?”
“What about me!?”
“You’re the vice-captain. Have you ever seen me taking Rain Breaker, the Knight Commander, everywhere?”
Jawil Wilson seemed to ponder this before grinding his molars.
“I need to train relentlessly and rise to become Knight Commander.”
“As a man, it’s good to live with that kind of goal.”
Jawil Wilson also stuck his head out the carriage window and continued.
“Sigh····it seems we’ve entered the Northern Continent. I can tell by how chilly it is even inside the carriage.”
“If you’re cold, put on more layers.”
“I’m still fine because of my build. But still, it feels like we were in the Western Continent just yesterday, and now we’re in the Northern Continent····”
“I know, right? At this rate, we might even meet the Northern Emperor, who knows.”
Jawil Wilson turned to me with a startled expression.
“Don’t say such terrible things! Do you have any idea how shocked I was when the Emperors of the Eastern and Western Continents came to Lake Estate last time!?”
“····Were you more shocked than I was?”
“W-well, no, but my heart really dropped. I thought a war between the Eastern and Western Continents was about to break out in Lake Estate.”
“Was it that bad?”
“When you were talking with Emperor Callian of the Western Continent in the reception room, it was hell outside. The way the Western Imperial Knights were glaring at us····”
I looked at Jawil Wilson with an interested expression.
“So what did you all do?”
“Of course, we glared right back at them, trying not to lose face.”
“You didn’t need to feel intimidated, did you? By now, you should be able to roughly gauge your opponent’s abilities, right?”
“····I didn’t get the impression they were overwhelmingly stronger than me, but their killing intent was incredibly intense.”
“You were probably overwhelmed by their killing intent. That makes sense, since the Western Imperial Knights came to Lake Estate right after the war.”
At my words, Jawil Wilson raised his head with a hardened expression.
“Young master, will we ever go to war too?”
“War?”
“I know you have no interest in the succession rights, but couldn’t we still get caught up in it?”
I crossed my arms heavily and nodded my chin.
“In your opinion, do you think we would lose to the Western Imperial Knights who came to Lake Estate this time?”
“····What? I don’t think we would lose.”
“Then what are you afraid of? If you don’t think we’d lose to the Imperial Knights, why would you fear a mere succession dispute within a single family?”
“W-well, that’s not it, but····still, wouldn’t knights who are loyal to their respective families have to cross swords with each other?”
“Well, that probably won’t happen, but even if it does, don’t waver mentally. A moment’s hesitation could cost the lives of the knights who follow you, and even Clara.”
Jawil Wilson looked like he had much to say but instead smiled bitterly.
“Young master, it must be hard having so many people to protect.”
“You’re right. And you’re one of them.”
Screech-!
Knock-knock-!
Just then, the carriage stopped, and soon after, the coachman knocked and opened the door.
As soon as the door opened, a cold chill rushed in.
I narrowed my brow slightly and spoke.
“Have we arrived?”
“Young master, the road is frozen, and the carriage cannot proceed any further.”
“I understand.”
Jawil Wilson and I exchanged glances and amicably exited the carriage.
As we did, a biting wind blew, and white breath swirled in the air.
“Y-young master····isn’t it too cold?”
“It is quite cold.”
“Do people really live here? It seems too cold to survive····”
I pointed to distant lights visible to Jawil Wilson.
“The estate is over there, see?”
“····These people are truly remarkable. Let’s hurry!”
In the brief moment since leaving the carriage, Jawil Wilson had layered on so many coats that his build appeared at least twice its normal size. He waddled ahead, leading the way.
Looking at his thick backside, I chuckled and stepped forward vigorously.
“Let’s go together.”
