Ch.284″Finally, heading towards Base Level 8.”
by fnovelpia
Three days later.
“You’ve really done a lot of work, Admiral Liran.”
-“…I’ve certainly had all kinds of experiences here.”
We were seeing off the bearded Liran and his fleet as they departed from the base. Liran had been transformed into a male pig(???) due to the 3,000-fold sensitivity enhancement.
Of course, this was after Griyanar and her research team had spent two full days working overnight on surgery and reconstruction to block the drug that had spread meticulously throughout his body and its side effects.
Anyway, right after we bid farewell to the pirate alliance’s protective fleet leaving the base.

<<Fleet Association Construction Complete!>>
<You can now build and repair ‘Battleships’!>

‘Oh.’
Seeing the construction completion event message that appeared at just the right timing, I turned off the communication screen and said to Jessica who was standing next to me.
“Jessica, those two battleships currently waiting at the docking facility.”
“Yes, Commander.”
“Move both of them to the dock, let’s proceed with the repairs we’ve been postponing.”
“Understood, I’ll contact them right away.”
Following my orders, I watched as the two battleships were gently tugged by dozens of shuttles acting as tugboats toward the large ship dock from the command center.
Sitting in the command seat, I decided to check the ‘Base Level 8 Upgrade Menu’ that had newly appeared with the completion of the Fleet Association construction.
And as soon as I saw the menu, I felt a groan escape from my mouth at the outrageously high price.

<Base Level 8 Upgrade>
<<<Required Resources: 1,200,000 Minerals, 500,000 Rare Resources>>>
<Upgrade Unlocks>
˪<Additional Docking Facility Unlocked>
˪<Additional Docking Facility Unlocked>
˪<Additional Large Ship Shipyard Construction Available>
˪<Strategic Tactics Research Institute Construction Available>
˪<Superhuman Soldier Training Facility Construction Available>

‘The price is insane.’
While the level 7 upgrade required about 500,000 minerals and 30,000 rare resources.
Level 8 demands minerals in the millions and hundreds of thousands of rare resources.
Despite the price being beyond imagination, and despite knowing we had been diligently accumulating resources, I immediately asked Jessica, who was standing by, how many resources we currently had to check if we were short on anything.
In response to my question, Jessica nodded confidently and answered.
“We’ve accumulated about 1.7 million minerals and about 900,000 rare resources!”
“But now we need to spend 1.2 million minerals and 500,000 rare resources.”
“…”
But when I told her that the resources we needed to spend right now were more than half of what we had worked so hard to collect.
Jessica’s expression conveyed the question, ‘You know what happens to your wrists if you’re caught lying, right?’
Of course, in response to Jessica’s reaction, I quietly took her wrist, pulled her closer, and showed her the menu.
Seeing the price clearly written on the menu screen, Jessica also showed the same expression I had just moments ago.
==========
But it’s not like the set price would be reduced or anything.
And since there was nowhere else to spend the resources right now anyway.
I decided to proceed with the base level 8 upgrade immediately.
If there was one fortunate aspect…

<Base Level 8 Upgrade in Progress…>
<Time Remaining Until Completion: 7 days 1 hour 35 minutes 28 seconds>

While the previous level upgrade consumed nearly a month for the base upgrade itself.
This level 8 upgrade would only take about a week, showing a surprisingly reasonable construction time.
Of course, after consistently increasing exponentially until now, it suddenly decreased, which was strange.
“That’s interesting though.”
“What is?”
“The level 8 upgrade time. It’s been increasing all this time, but suddenly it’s drastically reduced just for this level?”
“Ah… that.”
In response to Jessica’s very puzzled reaction, I shrugged and calmly said.
“Well, that’s because level 8 doesn’t have any particularly special or important buildings.”
“Oh, is that so?”
“Apart from the basic additional docking facilities and the large ship shipyard, the rest are just mediocre.”
To be frank, the level 8 base upgrade was essentially like a rest stop before the next upgrade, which would introduce ‘Dreadnought-class’ and various other advanced ships that would consume a lot of fleet points.
Of course, as always, I found it too bothersome to explain all this in detail myself.
So instead of explaining everything to Jessica directly, I naturally opened the gallery wiki tab to show her.
“Here, all the information you want is in here.”
“Ah, yes…”

Title: Introducing Base Level 8 Upgrade.txt

First of all, those who have built level 8 in the original game, or users who have built it here already know this,
But level 8 upgrade in our base is quite underwhelming in performance compared to other upgrade levels
First, the mineral cost for level 8 upgrade jumps more than double which is terrible,
And suddenly it demands rare resources at about 15 times the previous level, giving a big middle finger to those who haven’t saved up in advance
But then, as if to show it’s not completely without conscience, the construction time drastically decreases
The previous level took 25 days and some more hours, but level 8 suddenly drops to about a week
But there’s a good reason for this
Apart from one resource storage warehouse, a bunch of additional docking facilities, and one more large ship dock,
The rest of the newly added auxiliary buildings have terrible performance
There are exactly 2 new buildings
One is the Strategic Tactics Research Institute, which gives minor buffs to the fleet when built
But the level is only about 1-2 levels higher, so it doesn’t make much difference unless you’re in combat between super high-level players where tiny differences matter
The other one is the Superhuman Soldier Training Facility
But it’s not like SSS-class superhumans pop out of there; on average, you get D-class, or if you’re lucky, C-class superhumans
The characters from gacha get stronger as they level up,
But these guys are treated as “regular soldiers” so there’s no leveling system
To be honest, they’re just slightly stronger assault infantry or special forces that you can recruit from each faction’s delegation
Plus, while the base level upgrade time itself is faster, these new auxiliary buildings take even longer to build
And they consume a ton of resources.
Maybe because level 8 itself has such terrible performance overall
People who have done level 8 will soon think, “Damn, they compensate for this crap with just a reduction in base level upgrade time?”
Comments:
-[Wow, really?]
-[That’s right, I’m in the middle of level 8 construction and the resource cost is killing me]
-[Can’t be helped. Level 8 is basically preparation for the next level]
-[In the lore, they’re supposed to be enhanced soldiers to protect the interiors of Dreadnoughts and other advanced ships, and for ship command]
-[Like it or not, we’re stuck with this avant-garde setting]
-˪[Now that they’ve kidnapped us, can’t they drop the avant-garde setting?]
-˪[But being avant-garde is what makes it avant-garde…]

According to the wiki tab, level 8 base symbolized pure mediocrity.
But it’s not like we had any choice in the matter.
So we decided to diligently build it, consuming resources generously, while the level 5 stronghold served as a “solid defensive wall.”
