Ch.161Chapter 161 – The Fight Between Two People (2)
by fnovelpia
Around the time Eve and Sera subdued the three elf sisters.
A hellish scene was unfolding atop the city walls.
“There are too many enemies…!”
“Wyverns! Wyverns are coming! Duck!”
“The ballista?! Use arrows or anything to block them!”
Soldiers and adventurers were fighting while screaming.
Although the defending forces were few in number since many had left with Lord Sestas on an expedition, they still had walls and defensive facilities prepared against monsters. With some sacrifice, defense would have been possible.
If only it weren’t for those damned wyverns.
“Duck!!!”
With someone’s loud shout, people threw themselves down from the wall.
Soon after, with a tremendous crashing sound, a wyvern broke through part of the wall as it passed.
-Kieeaaaa!
“Damn, here comes another…!”
After one passed, another wyvern began a steep dive, apparently having waited for an opportunity.
Fear rose in the eyes of those who had just gotten back to their feet.
“‘Protect the young lambs!'”
A golden shield appeared in front of the wyvern.
With a terrifying impact, the diving wyvern collided with the shield and began falling to the ground.
Seeing its companion’s fate, another wyvern hesitated momentarily.
“An opening!!!!!”
Suddenly, a chain split into nine strands and wrapped around the wyvern’s entire body.
Having bound the wyvern in mid-air, Beatrice swung it like a morning star.
-Kieeaaa!!
-Krararack!
Unfortunately for another wyvern, it was caught in the attack, and Beatrice slammed both wyverns to the ground.
Then, using her chain, she landed safely on top of the wall.
“That’s two down!”
“Thank you!”
Allen shouted as he began casting spells from the wall.
Though his magic was lukewarm compared to Beatrice’s attack, it was powerful enough against the monsters below.
“The wyverns have been neutralized!”
“A mage! A mage has arrived!”
Cheers erupted from the soldiers on the wall.
Naturally, mages were quintessential asymmetric forces—beings who could drastically change the tide of battle with a single spell.
‘Even so, those numbers are too dangerous.’
Though she had come to the most critical section of the wall from the start, the monsters were truly overwhelming in number.
They were so numerous that Beatrice even felt a slight headache.
She used magic to enhance her senses.
In the distance, she could hear buildings being destroyed, and simultaneously, sounds came from the sky and other sections of the wall.
-Kraaaack!!
-“Save me!!”
-“Shoot arrows! Shoot arrows!!”
‘For now, three of them are attacking separately, one at each section of the wall.’
Looking at the sky, she could see wyverns circling and attacking one wall at a time.
They seemed to be prioritizing attacks on people, perhaps excited by something.
Fortunately, whether because two had already been taken down or because it was their nature, the three remaining wyverns were attacking one wall each, one at a time.
And they didn’t seem inclined to target this section yet.
Beatrice made her decision and stopped her magic.
‘I’ll focus only on this section.’
With her power alone, it would be difficult to cover other areas immediately.
Though she wanted to separate from Allen and Christina to defend elsewhere, she didn’t know Allen’s exact capabilities, and she feared something might happen to Christina if they separated.
‘If I did that, I wouldn’t be able to face the helmet.’
Although she had come to support the wall in this situation, she needed to prioritize her own group.
With so many monsters, they could be overwhelmed in an instant.
‘But, well, “our side,” huh.’
Beatrice smiled bitterly at the thought.
It was a self-mocking smile, directed at how she had been influenced by these good people to the point where she would prioritize them over others.
‘Not that it feels bad, though.’
Quickly organizing her thoughts, Beatrice called out to Christina.
“Sister!”
“Ah, yes!”
Christina, who had been deploying her shield, quickly turned around.
Some purple liquid was dripping down her golden shield, suggesting that monsters capable of shooting dangerous fluids were mixed in with the horde.
“I’m about to be immobilized, so please protect me as much as possible!”
“…Understood!”
As soon as she finished speaking, Beatrice crossed her arms.
She quickly began casting with her mouth.
‘I’ll divert all my magic power to this.’
Beatrice was sacrificing even the magic she normally used to strengthen her body for protection.
She was drawing in all the surrounding magical energy with all her might.
‘I’ll give up on helping the other sections myself.’
She immediately began to sweat due to the rapid diversion of magical energy.
Then Beatrice smiled fiercely.
“I’ll definitely clear this section.”
If this area with the most monsters could be secured, the forces here could reinforce other sections, ultimately saving more lives.
‘With luck, the helmet will join us with the others.’
Beatrice had confidence.
Though she knew that puppet master was extraordinary, she was certain that Kei would win.
Magic circles began to unfold beyond her crossed arms.
As the magic circles expanded continuously in all directions, Allen shouted:
“I thought you weren’t an ordinary mage…!”
Perhaps as a fellow mage, he could sense what Beatrice was attempting.
Or maybe he could feel the flow of magical energy being almost entirely appropriated for her use.
This flow also agitated the monsters with keen senses.
“Their attacks are intensifying!”
“Block them! Block them somehow!”
Monkey-like and locust-like monsters with sinister faces began climbing the walls.
Monsters that shot poison began launching attacks at the top of the wall.
Monsters already on the wall began to rampage more violently, attacking soldiers and running.
At the end of their gaze was Beatrice.
“They’re targeting the mage! Block them! Blo—!”
The voice of someone who appeared to be a commander was cut off as he was buried under monsters.
Nearby soldiers began fighting to rescue him, and soon the chaos of the battlefield intensified.
Christina formed a hand seal and extended it toward the surrounding monsters.
“Holy Light!”
Sacred light burned the monsters’ eyes.
Though the effect was mild since they weren’t undead, the sudden flash was enough to make the monsters cower momentarily.
Christina immediately rotated her staff and activated another holy spell.
“Holy Arrow!”
Arrows of light flew toward the monsters climbing the wall.
Though not lethally powerful, they were strong enough to shock the climbing creatures and make them fall back down.
Christina rotated her staff once more and chanted.
“‘Grant us sturdy bodies!'”
The holy spell activated.
Golden energy seeped into the surrounding soldiers and began to emit a faint light.
“I feel overflowing strength!”
“The priestess has blessed us! Charge!!”
The soldiers, strengthened by the blessing that enhanced their bodies, began to drive away the monsters with renewed vigor.
Gradually, the monsters near Beatrice began to be cleared out.
A large magic circle began to form in front of the wall where monsters were concentrated, rotating in conjunction with the magic circles Beatrice had deployed.
-Kraaaaa!!
“The wyverns!”
The wyverns that had fallen to the ground after colliding with each other took flight again.
Sensing the ominous flow of magical energy, they landed on top of the wall rather than flying away.
-Kroaaaa!!!
Unlike the other wyverns that weren’t approaching this section, these wyverns attacked the soldiers more ferociously.
Perhaps they instinctively realized it was too late to fly away and escape.
The wyverns attacked soldiers with their claws and wings, looking around frantically.
When Beatrice came into their view, flames began to rise in their throats.
“B-block them! Don’t let them attack!”
Fortunately still alive, the commander shouted again, but no one dared to step forward.
Though cute compared to a dragon’s breath, the fireballs wyverns spat were more than enough to incinerate a person.
Allen threw magically created icicles into one wyvern’s mouth, attempting to disrupt it.
-Kraaaa!!
The remaining wyvern’s fireball flew toward Beatrice.
Having diverted even her protective magic for the attack, Beatrice would not survive if hit.
Yet she continued casting with her eyes closed.
“‘Protect the young lamb!'”
A golden shield protected Beatrice.
Christina, standing right behind the shield, glared at the wyverns.
With their survival at stake, the wyverns roared loudly and charged at her.
Christina quietly overlapped her hands to form a seal.
“Holy Light!”
-Kraaaa?!!
The wyverns stopped their charge and began twisting their bodies.
As flying creatures with good eyesight, wyverns were particularly sensitive to intense flashes of light.
Allen didn’t miss the opportunity and cast a spell.
“Grease!”
A spell to make targets slip.
Normally it wouldn’t work on wyverns, but they were currently disoriented by the flash.
As they fell helplessly, Christina quickly shouted:
“‘Grant us sturdy bodies!'”
The soldiers around Christina were strengthened once more by her blessing.
She immediately called out to them:
“Please push the wyverns off the edge!”
The soldiers charged toward the wyverns that had fallen due to the Grease spell.
Holding their shields forward and bending low, they began forcibly pushing the wyverns.
-Kra, kraaaa?!
“Push! Don’t be afraid!”
“Trust in the priestess’s holy magic!!”
The soldiers desperately began pushing the wyverns.
-Kraraa!!
The wyverns immediately began to resist.
They tried to bite and push back the soldiers with their claws and heads.
But the soldiers steadfastly got up and rushed back in.
Thanks to Christina’s blessing, they were tough enough to withstand a few blind attacks, and additional soldiers blessed by Christina ran over to help.
“Puuuush!!!”
Finally, the wyverns fell back to the ground.
And at that moment.
The magic was complete.
“Get down if you don’t want to be caught in this!!”
With Beatrice’s shout, Christina used another holy spell.
A shield larger than usual formed, blocking part of the wall.
Beatrice’s magic circle also expanded greatly, protecting the wall.
And in front of it, Beatrice’s magic activated.
-Kugugugugugugugu…
The ground began to split.
As an earthquake started, monsters screamed and struggled to escape.
Then Beatrice quietly spoke the name of her spell.
“Explosion.”
With those words.
Flames erupted.
-Kraaaaa!!!
-Kieeeeek!!!
Flames made of magical energy burned the earth and devoured the monsters.
Naturally, the wyverns pushed to the ground also began to burn, and parts of the wall began to melt.
“Burn everything to ashes.”
As Beatrice said this and rotated the magic circle that appeared in her hand, the intensity of the flames briefly weakened.
Then they began to burn even more fiercely.
-Kwaaang!!
A thunderous sound rang out.
Stones of the wall not protected by magic and holy spells began to melt slightly.
Through the gaps, burning monsters began to collapse one by one and turn to ash.
+
After everything in front had burned away, the flames subsided and disappeared as if they had never been there.
“…My God…”
A soldier muttered.
Below the wall that had been teeming with monsters, only gray ash remained.
‘That’s taken care of.’
It was worth using up all her magic power and drawing in all the surrounding magical energy.
Then Beatrice didn’t resist the sudden feeling of nausea.
“Kuluk!”
“Lady Beatrice?!”
Christina approached in alarm.
Beatrice looked ruefully at the wall in front of her, now stained red.
“…Ah, I guess I used too much magic beyond my limit.”
It was a backlash from suddenly expending an enormous amount of magical energy, putting strain on her body.
This wouldn’t have happened if she had prepared as thoroughly as when facing the dragon.
Christina quickly tried to use a holy spell.
“Stop.”
“But this is dangerous…”
“It’s not a dangerous state. I’m just exhausted.”
Saying this, Beatrice sat down.
“Sorry, but please take care of the other sections.”
“…Yes.”
After saying this, Christina searched her belongings and placed something in front of Beatrice.
“Please take this.”
“What is it?”
“It’s an internal injury medicine made by Sera.”
They even prepared something like this?
Beatrice accepted it with a bitter smile.
“Go on. I’ll follow as soon as I recover a bit.”
“Yes, understood!”
Christina said this and ran to the soldiers with her staff.
Fortunately, the quick-witted commander was already reorganizing the troops to support other sections of the wall.
Watching this, Beatrice smiled and looked at the medicine.
“You really thought of everything.”
Smiling at the fact that she could rest and leave things to others for a while, Beatrice opened the lid of the medicine.
She drank it boldly like alcohol.
“Uwek!”
Almost spilling the medicine, Beatrice desperately covered her mouth.
After barely swallowing the medicine, she grumbled.
“Ugh, it’s so bitter, this is insane.”
With nothing to wash away the taste, the bitterness lingered.
Making a grimace, Beatrice took out a cigarette from her pocket and put it in her mouth.
