Ch.148″Heh heh heh, that guy is the weakest among our rankers.” (4)
by fnovelpia
Of course, everyone already knew about that problem.
Heaven knew it, earth knew it, and Jessica knew it too.
It was none other than my cursed, rotten, absolutely terrible gacha luck.
To be precise, the problem was that unlike others, my gacha luck was nonexistent.
If I had possessed even average luck like everyone else…
After acquiring the Overseer from that newbie whose name I’ve forgotten…
Instead of being pushed into a defensive position later on…
No joke, I could have assembled a proper hero lineup and become an “emperor without fighting” with fleet command buffs and support…
But in reality, my luck was so bad that my gacha pulls were disasters.
When I should have been playing “emperor” with the Overseer, my hero lineup was in such poor shape that showing off was impossible.
I did eventually get Griyanar, the all-purpose support professor, after upgrading my base…
But shortly after she appeared, a new event started, and I had no time for emperor-like behavior.
By the time the event ended, other users had grown too much for me to mindlessly play emperor with my Overseer and Berial-Griyanar combination.
And since then, if I’m being completely honest, all I’ve gotten from gacha was Partia, who’s basically just Ignis MK-2 minus the comedic aspects.
Everything else was a complete failure, and I couldn’t get any ships that should have formed my fleet’s strength alongside the Overseer.
Even though I recently pulled the Kraken—a super-large assault carrier with a 1,000,000 to 1 chance, or 0.0001% drop rate—
The problem was that I had nothing to escort it and serve as the fleet’s backbone except…
The Overseer-class cruiser that I’ve been using like bone broth, plus various light cruisers and destroyers I bought from the “Price of Goodwill” shop.
But ships from the event shop aren’t worth mentioning since everyone else has them too—they’re just “basic” equipment.
So I should buy ships from the “Trading Window,” but…
Ships there are basically expensive, and…
Above all, I don’t have the “gold” to trade there right now.
Well, I’m not completely broke, but…
—————————————-
<Shop-Trading Window>
<Remaining Gold: 100G>
—————————————-
Since users start with nothing and can’t acquire gold without spending real money…
I only had the basic gold provided by the administrators.
Besides this, I’d need to either sell my “gacha” ships directly in the shop’s auction house…
Or list them and wait forever until other users buy them.
But since the only gacha ship I have is the Overseer, selling it would make fleet battles impossible, so that’s meaningless too.
With my gacha luck being so terrible, the auction house became pointless for me.
Thanks to this, my ship situation was a complete mess, and the Kraken’s appearance was practically my last chance…
But here came the final problem among all my accumulated issues:
“So I pulled the Kraken, but who’s going to command it?”
In other words, I didn’t have a character who could provide the “necessary” buffs for my precious Kraken-class combat carrier.
Of course, Jessica, who had been listening to my self-questioning, gave me a puzzled look and asked:
“Commander, couldn’t you just put Griyanar on the Kraken?”
“Griyanar, you say?”
“Yes, I think she’d be thrilled and would rush to merge with it immediately.”
Lately she’s been going around saying “Wow! Tentacles!” while keeping pet tentacles.
As I recalled the increasingly creepy purple-haired flat-chested professor who’s been modifying her captives and developing strange fetishes…
I had to admit Jessica was probably right.
If I really suggested it, she might try to relocate her research lab from the “Biology Research Institute” to the Kraken’s bridge… or rather, its brain.
Or she might try to integrate herself with the Kraken, claiming she wanted to become a complete organism.
But that wasn’t the important issue.
Above all, there was no need to put Griyanar on the Kraken specifically, so I shook my head in denial at Jessica’s suggestion.
“While I’m quite curious what kind of tentacle show Griyanar might create on the Kraken… I currently have no intention of putting her there.”
“Um… why not?”
Of course, at my response, not only Jessica…
But also Berial, who had been talking with Marian at the command center for some reason, seemed to turn her attention toward us.
So I felt the need to provide at least a simple explanation.
“It’s simple. Griyanar’s totem buffs are shared with the entire fleet anyway.”
“Is that so? But Commander, you assigned Griyanar permanently to the Overseer before.”
Then I realized why Jessica had such a question.
‘I suppose others might think Griyanar has a special ship buff that made me assign her permanently.’
But that wasn’t the case at all.
“Back then, the Overseer had been so heavily modified that it became too unstable, so I had no choice.”
“Unstable? Was there such a system?”
There was.
To prevent situations where users mindlessly stack equipment and modifications until their patrol ships could one-shot newbies’ battleships…
The administrators designed a system where excessive ship modifications dramatically increased the chance of problems.
The Overseer, already specialized in firepower with other aspects being barely adequate, was modified to have fleet-level power in a single ship.
Despite Griyanar using special biological components (30% pirate content) for bypassing and extensively working to improve durability…
Our Overseer had reached a point where it couldn’t be deployed without Griyanar herself being attached to it.
“That’s why as soon as I pulled the Kraken, I ordered the Overseer’s modifications to be dismantled and restored to factory settings.”
“Ah, I see…”
“Anyway, the important thing is that I don’t have anyone suitable to put on the Kraken.”
“What about Berial? If you want fleet command buffs, couldn’t she do it?”
As we said this, Berial, who had been talking with Marian, was seen adjusting the collar of her uniform and fixing her posture.
But at this point, I realized I had never shown Jessica why Berial’s command buffs would be “meaningless” for the Kraken.
“Jessica, look at this.”
“What is it… ah, I see.”
As I spoke in a “Look, a glow-in-the-dark dinosaur!” kind of tone…
Jessica looked puzzled but checked the status window I had just opened.

<Berial>
<Command Buff>
<Fleet, Fire in Position!>
<Cannon Accuracy +15%, Cannon Rate of Fire +5%, Mobility -1%>
—————————————-
Seeing the “accuracy” and “rate of fire” clearly displayed…
“So that’s why you said it wouldn’t work.”
As the saying goes, even a dog that spends three years in a classroom can recite poetry.
Even Jessica, who had little interest or knowledge about combat or fleet battles, nodded as she understood why I hadn’t mentioned Berial.
“Yes, if I were only going to use the Kraken as an artillery ship, it might work… but that would render most of the Kraken’s armaments meaningless.”
Of course, in response to our reaction, Berial’s shoulders slumped slightly as she was adjusting her uniform.
Her expression seemed to become somewhat gloomy.
But no matter what, what doesn’t work doesn’t work, so I inwardly shook my head and remained firm in my resolve.
