Apocrypha 2 : Fig Tree / Bodhi Tree / The King’s Decision

~~Fig Tree~~
<Side : Myrit Radius>
God is a monster that feeds on faith.
It might sound offensive to those who worship gods, but that’s how I see it.
Various documents prove that gods are beings with will and substance. However, no one has proven where gods reside or why they save humans from Monsters.
Is it merely a god’s amusement, or do they save their creations because their nature is benevolent? No one knows.
No, there’s not even proof that humans created gods. Only the passage in myths that they molded their own image to create humans is passed around by word of mouth.
It is the power of faith that upholds this ambiguous, mysterious being and elevates it to its current status. In other words, it’s the power of believers.
What if people hadn’t created songs praising gods? What if they hadn’t made statues in the image of gods and bowed their heads before them?
The Light of Judgment, called a miracle of god, would turn into a light of death that could strike at any moment.
In the end, everything depends on people. People have the power to turn natural phenomena like rain and snow, or natural disasters like lightning and earthquakes, into gods at any time.
I realized this when I was just a naive five-year-old kid, when I was called the manager who could freely enter the World Tree—or, in other words, the Pointy-ear’s Slave.
I had no parents by the time I could speak and walk. I had no peers, no adults to rely on, and I was left in a remote alley.
My childhood memories began then. I ate starving rats because I had nothing to eat, and I scavenged leftover food scraps to survive.
Even now, I think it was a harsh reality for a young child who hadn’t even reached double-digit age. Then one day, it was the Pointy-ears who saved me from those hellish days.
“Did the World Tree really choose such a lowly Inferior Species? I can’t understand it at all.”
“Don’t say such things. How can we understand the will of the World Tree, our mother? Let’s quickly retrieve him and return. The smell of the Inferior Species is foul. I need to bathe as soon as we get back.”
“W-Who are you…?”
I still remember that moment vividly. The appearance of a beautiful woman with a sharp nose, large eyes, and a sculpted body, whom I saw for the first time in my life. They didn’t even answer my question and just took me away.
The place they took me to was not a dirty, dusty back alley, but a forest filled with refreshing, clear air.
The moment my life, which had been overflowing with gray, was dyed blue… was shattered to pieces just a few days after being dragged away by the Pointy-ears.
“From today, you are the manager of the Sapling chosen directly by the World Tree. This is the handover document left by the previous manager. Read and learn it. You will soon be participating in the work, so it would be good to learn quickly.”
“From today, your name will be… Myrit, Radius. We’ll call you that. It’s taken from the names of the humans who dared to enter our forest. I hope you don’t make the same choices as those humans.”
The Pointy-ears roughly washed my dirty body, dressed me in ill-fitting clothes, gave me a name, and taught me how to read.
At first, I couldn’t even write properly, and I didn’t even have a name. I learned diligently how to do the work, hoping to repay their kindness in helping me.
I didn’t fully understand what the manager of the Sapling meant, but I desperately took over the work.
I thought something was wrong from the start, and I had to escape somehow.
Of course, when I was young, I didn’t know what kind of reputation the Pointy-ears had in the world, or how they viewed humans, so I lived in the Pointy-ear’s base like a fool.
I was living a life of eating dead rats, so I thought I was enjoying a slightly better life. I even looked down on the people left in the back alleys. But…
“Is this all you can do! This is why they’re called Inferior Species…!”
“If you give it this much water, the roots will rot. You don’t even know such basic knowledge. If you hadn’t been chosen by the World Tree, I would have buried you from the start.”
“Pathetic… It was my mistake to expect anything from an Inferior Species. We need to find the next manager quickly. I can’t stand breathing the same air as this Inferior Species, it makes me sick.”
“A useless fellow who can’t even move this small Sapling. If you make such a mistake again, I will personally punish you.”
It was a harsh treatment for a five-year-old child. The gratitude and expectations I had for the Pointy-ears, who had taken me in with good intentions, were gradually trampled on by their hands.
Not long after I started managing the Sapling, I was subjected to all sorts of insults and criticisms. I was thrown to the ground for giving it just a little too much water.
I was slapped for not being able to move a Sapling bigger than my own body.
From then on, the Pointy-ear’s punishments became more severe. It was a matter of course that they only gave me enough food to barely survive, and they didn’t even treat my injured wounds.
I couldn’t stand it and tried to escape, but I was caught by the Pointy-ears in less than a minute after leaving the forest. What happened after that… Ugh, I don’t even want to think about it.
That’s when it started. I began to feel a great antipathy towards the World Tree, whom the Pointy-ears called mother and god, and I began to deny the existence of gods altogether.
Perhaps this was a reaction to my inability to directly resist the Pointy-ears, and I came to hate the World Tree…
Even now, as I’ve grown older, that ideology hasn’t changed. God is a monster that feeds on faith. Even if I’m tortured, my thoughts will never change.
I later learned that not all Pointy-ears were like that. It was just that the Pointy-ears of the World Tree were particularly more exclusive of other races, and especially despised humans.
Of course, there were only a few things I could do in the forest, from which I couldn’t escape.
If only I had known sooner that the Pointy-ears couldn’t kill me, my range of actions would have increased much more.
In the past, when I didn’t know that, I couldn’t even think about sabotage, and I had no choice but to adapt to reality and become accustomed to the work.
“Hmm… You’ve become a little more useful. But you still don’t measure up to even the tips of our Pointy-ear’s toes.”
“Heh…! Not bad for an Inferior Species! If you had done that from the beginning, you wouldn’t have been hit and it would have been better~”
“Always be grateful for the grace of the World Tree. If the World Tree hadn’t chosen you, you would have been destined to die without a place to go.”
That’s enough bullshit… If you hadn’t brought me here, I would have found my own way to survive.
Is it the result of experiencing all the hardships of the world with a young body? Perhaps that’s why I became more mature than my age.
It was also around that time that I gradually closed my heart. I knelt before the thought that no one would help me and the reality that no human other than me could enter this place.
The days of living as a Slave of the World Tree passed for 15 years… And then I met the person who would completely change my life once again…
“……Well, that’s all for today’s story~ I’m thirsty from talking so much. Huh? You want to hear more? Really…? Ahaha, unfortunately, Liza is more suited to be the narrator for the next story than I am. When Liza comes back, buy her a drink and ask her to tell you the story. Liza is the type to loosen her tongue when she drinks.”
“Hic… Hey, you can’t just leave like that. Why don’t you tell us the ending? Even the most skilled bards couldn’t tell such a tantalizing story. I’ll buy you another drink! How about it?”
“Ah~ If you beg me like that, I can’t help it. I’ll just tell you a little bit of the rest of the story as you wish. I’m really doing you a favor, you know? It’s the story of a man who is living a fairytale-like life in the present, which you can’t hear anywhere else.”
One way or another, my fateful meeting with Liza ended, and I decided to leave the Pointy-ear’s forest.
Because at that time, I had escaped from being a pathetic man who succumbed to the Pointy-ear’s coercion and the World Tree’s pressure, and had become a confident man who could stand firmly on his own two feet.
Of course, I wanted to give up my position as the manager of the Sapling at the time, but even if I wanted to quit, I didn’t know how to quit.
So I just decided to leave. I wasn’t afraid of the Pointy-ears anymore.
“Myrit Radius! Are you not afraid of the World Tree’s wrath…! Are you going to betray the grace of the World Tree, who saved you from a fate of dying without a place to go!!”
“I’m going to leave now to find freedom. I’m not a coward anymore. You can take care of the Sapling manager position yourselves. Complain to the World Tree from 15 years ago, who chose me, a human, in the first place, not a Pointy-ear.”
“You Inferior Species!! An ungrateful fellow who doesn’t understand the great will of the World Tree! The World Tree’s wrath will threaten you forever. You will never bear fruit. Your name will forever be placed before the World Tree, and you will work for the World Tree even in death. It will be too late to regret it then. You are now…”
“Ah, I get it, you Pointy-ear bastards! Stop talking so much, it hurts my ears. It’s annoying. Myrit…, was it? Then I, Elizabeth Pendragon, declare in front of this name. I will definitely protect Myrit Radius. No matter how many spies you Pointy-ears send, or how many arrows you shoot, I will crush them all. Come if you dare.”
……Thus, the story of a pitiful man came to an end, and the story of a man living a happy life, having a sweet honeymoon with Liza, began.
How was it, fun, right? Oops…, it’s almost time for Liza to come back, so I’ll be going now. It feels refreshing to talk about old stories once in a while. Then see you next time~

~~Bodhi Tree~~
<Side : Elizabeth Pendragon>
Dragons are monsters that eat blood and flesh. Their scales are so hard that they can’t be cut by any famous sword… Huh? Are dragons real? Of course, they are, you idiot.
How many people are still dying because of dragons in kingdoms and empires? Are you living in a different world than me?
Oh? You’re from out of town and don’t know much about dragons…? Then listen carefully, because I’ll tell you from the beginning.
In this region, dragons are truly symbols of disaster. A single flap of their wings can blow away a village, landing on the ground can collapse castle walls, and breathing fire can destroy a country.
Moreover, they are so greedy that they pile up gold and jewels in their nests, and when they get upset, they casually burn down villages.
Hmm…? Are they like Monsters? They’re a little different. ‘Dragons are not Monsters’ is the prevailing theory in academia. At least, the old dragons are said to be older than the history of Monsters.
They’re completely separate beings. I don’t know the details. I’m not some scholar.
So, should everyone run away when a dragon appears… You’re really behind on your information. That’s an old story.
We humans, you see, are not so powerless that we cower and wave the white flag just because a dragon appears.
The current perception of dragons is… a bonanza, a bonanza! Their scales are used as materials for the highest-grade armor, their claws and teeth are used for weapons, and their membranes and blood are used as the highest-grade medicinal ingredients.
Of course, catching a single dragon requires more than 30 first-class adventurers and more than 10 top-tier mages, making it a large-scale expedition…
Hey! Stop asking so many questions. If you keep bothering me, I’m just going to leave!! I came all the way here to tell you the story at his request, but are you just going to ask questions?
I would have told you everything anyway… Oh, ah… Scales? Didn’t I say earlier that dragon scales can’t be cut by any sword?
You really lack common sense. Everyone in the world has known how to break and melt dragon scales for a long time.
I heard that a young, prominent blacksmith in the royal palace before I was even born discovered a way to break and melt dragon scales, and he even received a medal from the king at the time.
I don’t know much about it because it was before I was born. His name was Youth… or something?
……Ah, really, stop rushing me. Okay, okay, I’ll just tell you this and then get back to the main story.
You can tell from the story I’m telling you now that the perception of dragons here is different from that in the East, right?
Dragons here are monsters. But in some places, dragons are revered as sacred beings, and the people who come from out of town always praise them highly.
There’s a reason why that’s the case. The habitats of dragons are all concentrated here, so dragons rarely appear in other places, and the damage is naturally reduced accordingly.
That’s why the phrase ‘how to slay a dragon’ is used in completely different ways here and in other places.
Well, here, there are even books like ‘108 Ways to Defeat a Dragon,’ so it’s now used as a common idiom, but here, ‘how to slay a dragon’ means something impossible.
In the past, when a dragon appeared, people had no choice but to suffer helplessly, and no attacks or Magic worked.
On the other hand, in other places, ‘how to slay a dragon’ probably meant something that doesn’t exist, right? I know it’s used to mean that there’s no such thing as a dragon, so how can you slay it.
Is that right…? Ah, that’s right! I knew my memory wouldn’t fail me!
But why am I just talking about dragons when I came here to tell you the story of how I met him?
Hehe… That story is very closely related, so that’s why I’ve been laying the groundwork like this.
You impatient humans. Then, let’s start the long-awaited story. Open your ears wide and listen carefully.
“Hey Herry. Are you sure this is the right way? The more we go, the more trees there are.”
“Ah, I’m sure. It’s a bit of a detour, but if we keep going at this pace, we’ll be there soon.”
“But Herry. Are you sure we can trust this request? Was it okay to accept a request from the Pointy-ears of the World Tree, who have a very bad reputation among the Pointy-ears, so readily?”
“That’s exactly it, Annie! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Pointy-ears, who hate humans to the point of despising them, sent us a request directly by urgent mail! This smells very fishy, doesn’t it? I feel like my academic zeal as the top student of the academy is burning! What is the Pointy-ear’s forest like? Why did the Pointy-ears send us a request? Aren’t you excited?”
The magician Harry Tetrahedron, the Vanguard Anidiart Serenpid, and the sniper Elizabeth Pendragon. The three-person party, including me, was a well-known first-class adventurer party.
But suddenly, Herry brought in some strange request and set off for the Pointy-ear’s forest without hesitation. That was the starting point of this story.
“Top student my ass. Summoning and employing Monsters from another world? You were expelled from the academy after half-destroying it with such a strange experiment, what academic zeal do you have left? Didn’t you just accept it to satisfy your curiosity?”
“Beth, that’s too harsh. It’s true that my curiosity was also added a little~ But I thought I might be able to find my groom! So I inadvertently agreed. Male Pointy-ears grow slower than female Pointy-ears, so they must be very small!”
“Haa… The Pointy-ears cherish animals, so we didn’t even bring the animals we employ on purpose, but to think that the reason we accepted the request was for such a reason… It was my mistake to believe Herry.”
“You crazy bitch. You’ll never have a good marriage. What kind of taste is it to like a man who is 10 years younger than you? If you hadn’t learned Magic, you would have rotted and died in prison forever.”
A 14-year-old party that laughed off each other’s good and bad words. Me, living as a wandering mercenary, Herry, who was expelled from the academy and wandered around the adventurer’s guild, and Annie, who came out to find her lost younger sibling.
It’s a hard combination to imagine, right? Actually, I think so too. It’s really amazing that we’ve been doing well for 14 years without any conflicts between the party members, isn’t it?
…What, you knew about our party? You should have said so. Well, the party disbanded a year later, but I’m still continuing my adventurer life with him.
“Any·way! We’ll be there soon! We must never surprise the Pointy-ears. Of course! We’re not weak enough to be easily defeated either!”
“Okay. Hey, but what was the request about? Let’s at least know that much before we go. It’s too much to come all the way here without knowing anything about the content, isn’t it?”
“Ah, that’s right… Where did I put the request form? Ah… I found it. Let’s see… The request is… deworming? It seems like it’s about catching bugs?”
“Ugh… I can’t control bugs, so that’s not ideal. I knew it, my superhuman Sixth Sense gave me a feeling when we left today. ‘Beware of centipedes!’ it said. But aren’t centipedes not bugs?”
“If it’s creepy, it’s a bug. What even defines a bug? …Hey, there it is. That place screams ‘Elves live here~’.”
After hacking our way through the forest path, we arrived at an entrance made of huge interwoven branches, so green you could practically smell it.
As soon as we got there, pointy-ear assassins in full black garb popped out in front of us. I was so startled I almost went straight into battle mode, you know?
“Ah, Cunt! You scared the shit out of me! I almost shot you!”
“Hey, you bitches almost gave me a heart attack! I’ll blast you with Magic!”
“Whoa!? You wanna die!!”
–WHACK!!!!
“…How barbaric. Whipping us without a word. Even if the Elder handpicked you adventurers, do we really have to rely on such lowlifes? Our elven honor has fallen to the ground.”
“It can’t be helped. Our elven Magic doesn’t work on that centipede, and neither do swords or spears. The Elder decided that this was the only way to end this situation as quickly as possible and free the World Tree from its suffering. That’s why she chose the party with the best reputation among the human adventurers.”
Our first impression of the elves was the worst. Seeing those Pointy-ears looking at us like we were bugs, even we big-hearted people couldn’t help but get annoyed.
Right? Right! See, even strangers from different lands can understand each other! Anyway, to continue the story, we were guided by the elves and walked deep into the forest.
At the end of the path was a shocking sight… or a disgusting sight? Something like that.
“W-what…? Is that… a centipede wrapped around the tree? My Sixth Sense was right!”
“Looks like it’s sucking sap from the tree. That’s the World Tree they cherish so much, right?”
“Looks like it. But… ugh, it’s so gross. I feel like I’m gonna throw up what I ate this morning… huh, what’s that?”
A centipede covered in black shell, so tightly packed that you couldn’t even see the bark of the huge tree. Just watching it wriggle made me lose my appetite.
I’ve exterminated centipedes before, but I’ve never seen one that big! The problem was that our mission was to exterminate that centipede.
The elf who looked like an Elder was saying something, but I caught sight of a man behind her.
“Welcome. Human adventure… hmm? There’s something strange mixed in. But no matter. I assume you know why you’re here, so I’ll get straight to the point. Exterminate the centipede that is gnawing at our mother, the World Tree, right now. You will be compensated handsomely.”
“Something strange… so even the elves living in the World Tree can tell. …But wait, what’s that human skewered on that stake?”
“Ah, ‘that’ you mean? You don’t need to worry about that. That is the Sapling’s caretaker and is being punished for failing to do what he should have as a servant of the World Tree. Allowing the centipede to invade… a situation not worth discussing further. You just need to do your job and leave this forest.”
See, isn’t that a conversation that just pisses you off? Maybe it’s because of my burning sense of justice, but I couldn’t just leave that human skewered on a stake.
So I declared in front of that Pointy-ear, ‘If you don’t release that human, we won’t kill that centipede.’ The Pointy-ear Elder got so angry and started ranting.
Actually, his expression was so funny that I don’t really remember what he said, but Herry and Annie were just as adamant, so he reluctantly let him go.
“C-cough… hukk… Th-thank you, kehuk……”
“It’s okay. Don’t talk. Herry, do you have any potions left? Pour them all on him.”
“Yes, yes~ I understand. But is it okay to waste potions?”
“Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it. If things go wrong, I can just use ‘that’.”
“Ugh… I’ve told you so many times, you really can’t use ‘that’. Anyway, let’s lay that man down and do what we need to do.”
You’re asking if that man is Myrit? Aha-ha! You’re quick on the uptake. You guys heard his story yesterday, so if I’ve told you this much, you probably know.
Yes. The man we rescued from the elves’ torture, and now my husband. That’s where I first met Myrit Radius. Isn’t that a fateful encounter?
Just thinking about it makes me dizzy. I can confidently say that even if I tried to force a romance, it wouldn’t be this good!
A romance between a man oppressed by elves and the genius adventurer who saved him. If I wrote this as a book, it would be an instant bestseller!
Ah… the story went off track. Was I a little too excited? Well, let’s skip that. The next part is just a boring story.
The centipede’s carapace, which was immune to elven Magic, was easily smashed by my Magic gun, and Annie’s whip tore the centipede to pieces. Herry burned all the remains with Magic.
You’re saying the story is suddenly speeding up? But what can I do, it’s the truth.
Honestly, when I made holes in the centipede’s body with just a few shots from my Magic gun, I even started to suspect that the Pointy-ears were tricking us.
And…! And…! The real story of how I was connected with him starts right now! Listen carefully, this is the real deal!
Actually, I… am a Half-Dragon who was splashed with dragon blood! I can even transform into a dragon…
What? You’re saying the story is too fast and out of the blue? But I’ve been laying the groundwork since before, what more do you want? Why else would I have explained about dragons at length before starting the story?
And the Pointy-ear Elder also said that there was ‘something strange’ mixed in. That’s actually me. Ah, don’t be so scared. I can’t transform into a dragon at will anyway.
I participated in an expedition to hunt a dragon back when I was a wandering mercenary, and I got splashed with a lot of dragon blood while catching that dragon, and that’s how I became like this.
If I hadn’t had a single leaf stuck to my back then, I would have been completely corrupted by the dragon blood, right? Thanks to that, I gained various abilities, but if I talk about that, it’ll be all night.
Let’s put that aside for now, after we defeated that centipede, my chest suddenly started to hurt. A feeling like the inside of my chest was burning and I wanted to destroy everything?
Then my reason vanished as if it had evaporated, and I turned into a dragon!
Ah… I really thought I was done for then, you know? I felt like I was going crazy too. My limbs wouldn’t move as I wanted, and even if I wanted to speak, only screams came out.
But the Pointy-ears immediately went on the offensive when they saw my changed form, and Herry and Annie were protecting me with their weapons, and it felt like we were all going to die like this.
I wanted to die as a human, at least… the moment I thought that! That’s when it happened. A warm green Magical power enveloped my body.
My lost reason returned, my body gradually shrank, and I returned to being human. And what was in front of me when I became human again was…
“A-are you okay? Cough…! It won’t hurt anymore. So don’t worry, kuek…!”
Kyaaaa!! How romantic is that? The man I saved saves me again. This romance novel-like story is all true, isn’t this the kind of story that anyone dreams of at least once, regardless of gender?
That’s why I fell in love with him at first sight. I met the man of fate who completely changed my destiny, which was to die as a dragon.
His appearance, leading his injured body, worrying about my safety and smiling brightly. Just thinking about it makes me go crazy.
…Huh? Ah, sorry, sorry~ Did my love story suddenly go off track? But what can I do? This is the truth of that day that he didn’t tell me.
After that, I became disillusioned with the Pointy-ears, and in a fit of anger, I made a bombshell statement that I didn’t need the reward and would take him with me.
I thought the Pointy-ears would go wild, but they knew I could transform into a dragon.
They couldn’t touch me, but they were giving him strange threats. That’s where I!
“A-alright, I get it, you Pointy-ear bastards! Stop talking so much, it hurts my ears. It’s annoying. Myrit…, was it? Then I, Elizabeth Pendragon, declare in front of my name. I will definitely protect Myrit Radius. Even if you Pointy-ears send spies or shoot arrows, I’ll smash them all. Come at me if you dare.”
…I said. See, aren’t I the best bride material? Where else can you find a top-notch bride who supports her future husband this much? After rescuing him from the Pointy-ears’ forest, the four of us traveled together for a year, and then I succeeded in marrying him with his proposal! I got married much earlier than Herry or Annie.
Alright! That’s the end of the story. I’ve been talking so much that I haven’t even finished my drink. But it feels so good to tell this story after so long. I feel like I’ve gone back to the days when I was dating him♡
–Ting…
“Liza. Let’s go now. It’s getting late.”
“Wow~ honey. Did you come to pick me up because you were worried about me?”
“Well, you could say that. Alright, everyone, that’s the end of my and Liza’s story. Thank you for hanging out with Liza, and I can’t promise when the next story will be…”
“I’ll bring you a fucking awesome story. Next time, be prepared to buy all the alcohol in this store! Goodbye~”

“Your Majesty, I beg you, please! Lend us your wisdom, Your Majesty! Please reveal the true mother of this child!”
“This child is mine. There is no doubt that this child was born from my womb, not anyone else’s! That woman is lying!”
“Shut up! You’re the one who’s lying every time you open your mouth! Your Majesty, please make a wise choice, even if it’s just by looking at my earnest face. This child is mine!”
How pathetic. So pathetic. What sin does that poor child, who can only cry and struggle, have committed that two mothers are claiming ownership of him?
What I see in those eyes is greed, not even a trace of maternal love. Those are ugly eyes that see the child only as a tool for themselves.
Those people wouldn’t even bat an eye if I cut the child in half…
