27. I Don’t Hate Sister Anymore
Thump, thump-thump.
Sister is knocking on the door. But I have no intention of opening it.
Sister lied to me twice. And not just any lie, but a lie involving food. Good heavens, even that wicked hamster who tried to steal my Ice fruit last time wouldn’t do that!
As far as I’m concerned, Sister is just a child with a big body. Before, Sister was my number one ‘future self I want to become,’ but now that I know the truth about Sister, I think I need to change my role model to someone else.
“Hmph.”
I just hope Sister matures a bit from this incident. I’m going to cover myself with the blanket and spend time endlessly… but then I suddenly realized something.
Sister is strong. Isn’t it natural for a wolf suin to be strong, but Sister, being the daughter of the chief, was particularly strong even among wolf suins.
So… this means that if Sister wanted to, she could break down the door I’ve locked in an instant, like crushing a delicate cookie.
“Huk!”
Of course, Sister isn’t the type of person to do something like that impulsively. Sister is kind, gentle, cool, smart, and mature… no, not mature, but a bit childish!
But there’s always a ‘what if.’ If Sister gets worried about me not coming out after locking the door, she might resort to drastic measures. Then the door will burst open, and I’ll be helplessly caught by Sister.
That’s dangerous. I still have no intention of forgiving Sister.
I quickly got out of bed and started dragging the chair from the desk with a grunt. It was a child-sized chair, so it was quite small, but it would help a little in blocking Sister’s entry.
“Done!”
Just like in the movies I saw in my past life, I wedged the chair under the doorknob, tilting it to prevent the door from opening. I’ve only seen it done before, this is my first time actually doing it, but I think I did it properly.
“Chair… you have to block it well, okay?”
I patted the chair and said. It’s a chair I’ve used since I was little, and its sturdiness is proven, so just standing there in front of the door made it look reliable.
With such perfect security, another problem arose.
“C-cold….”
The stove in my room had gone out, leaving only black ashes. The reason was simple. I slept in Sister’s room yesterday, not my own.
I caught a cold during the snowball fight, came to my room, found the fire out, went to Sister’s room, my cold miraculously disappeared, and I slept soundly. So, of course, the stove in my room had to be out.
Moreover, it had been left unattended for over a day, so there wasn’t even a hint of warmth left in the ashes inside the stove. Because of that, my room, to be honest, had no temperature difference from the outside.
“Hoo hoo…. Ugh.”
My body shivered. Even when I gathered my small hands and blew into them, it was only warm for that moment. Soon, a bone-chilling cold enveloped me.
I’m wearing pajamas right now. The clothes were too thin to withstand the cold of the North.
Still, it’s fortunate that I have my tail. If I hid myself in my fluffy and warm tail, I could endure this much.
After spending some time in my tail, I soon heard a sound from somewhere. I thought it was Sister knocking on the door and ignored it, but it was different.
“Kkang!”
Huk.
I quickly pulled my face out from where it was buried in my tail. The source of the sound was the window. Outside the window, an Arctic fox was scratching at the window!
“Fox!”
Instinctively, I knew this fox was special. Whether it cured my cold or helped me avoid danger. It couldn’t be a mere coincidence. So, it must have come to help me again!
I quickly opened the window to let the fox inside.
“Ugh!”
Whoooosh-! But in that fleeting moment, a tremendous snowstorm swept into the room. Did I say earlier that my room had no temperature difference from the outside? Seeing the room instantly buried in snow, I regretted my complacent thought.
“C-colddd….”
“Kkang!”
It was much colder outside than I thought. My room, which had been bearable just a moment ago, had now become a real cold ice freezer.
If this continues, I might turn into a frozen wolf. If a super-genius cool wolf like me turns into an ice statue, it would be a great national loss.
I shook my body to blow away the snow that had covered me, and then, hugging the fox, I said.
“Fox, quickly warm up the room!”
“Kkang?”
However, the fox tilted its head as if to say, ‘What are you talking about?’ and only made a ‘kkang’ sound. I, who felt like I was going to freeze to death, quickly continued.
“You- you came to help me, right? Hurry!”
“Kkang.”
“H-you don’t know how? Then at least light the stove over there!”
This fox is special. So maybe it can light a fire. But the fox shattered my hopeful prediction and shook its head.
I asked with a tearful face.
“Can’t you do something with this stone? It cured my cold…”
“Kkang-kkang.”
“You can’t…? Then maybe you just came to play with me…? Not to help?”
“Kkang!”
The fox finally grinned and cried out. Whatever it meant, I could bet it wasn’t a denial. I looked even more tearful.
“It’s not time to play, you idiot! I’m cold…!”
By letting the foolish fox in, the room became even colder. If I had ignored the fox, I could have endured it in my tail for a thousand years, but it was a huge misjudgment.
This foolish fox…! It tricked me!
“Hwaang….”
“Kkang….”
The foolish fox licked my cheek. But that wouldn’t warm my body. I roughly cleared the snow piled on the bed and burrowed into the blanket. Of course, the fox came with me.
“Cold….”
With more fur balls, it was a little bearable for now. But as the snow that had swept in melted and seeped into the blanket, the warmth was gradually losing its power.
“Hoo….”
“Kkang.”
A faint breath escaped. It’s too cold. I buried my face in the foolish fox’s belly and cried. I cried because it was too cold, and because I was too sad.
I miss Sister. If Sister were by my side, she would have surely lit a fire magnificently, unlike this foolish fox. Then I could have been comfortably in a warm room.
Lying in bed, I would have read picture books with Sister, and we would have voted on which stones were cool while looking at the stones I collected. And that’s not all. Then we would have had lunch with Mom and Dad, and happily among the harmonious family….
“Huk, sob….”
Sister seems to have decided to leave me alone. She’s probably waiting for me to calm down. But I can guarantee that my anger has already completely subsided.
Still, I couldn’t bring myself to go out because of a child’s stubbornness. It’s an absurd stubbornness, wanting Sister to come to me first.
I want Sister to open the door first, hug me, apologize, and then I’ll pretend to be a little upset, and then we’ll get along well again… That’s what I was hoping for. I didn’t feel like approaching Sister first.
“Foxyyy… Sister isn’t coming….”
“Kkang!”
“But I don’t want to go….”
I know this is a childish thought. But so what? I’m a child right now. An 8-year-old child. I’m destined to become a strong and powerful wolf in the future, but I’m still young.
“Kkang!”
“Huh…?”
The fox jumped out of my arms, where I was trembling and crying, and then went to the door blocked by the chair and barked ‘kkang-kkang’.
“I don’t want to talk to Sister first, you idiot… Hing….”
“Kkang!”
The fox spun around in place. Then, it jumped onto my desk, picked up a short pencil from a container with its mouth, and took it out. It’s the pencil I use.
“Why the pencil?”
“Kang!”
Then the fox looked around and let out a weak ‘kiiing…’ cry. It seemed like something was missing for its plan.
“What a pencil needs is… paper?”
“Kkang!”
“The paper is in the storage, but what are you trying to do… Huk!”
My complaint that I didn’t want to talk to Sister first. And the pencil and paper… I soon understood what the fox was trying to say.
“Are you telling me to write a letter to Sister?”
“Kkang!”
“Fox, you’re a genius!”
Of course, I’m even more of a genius for understanding that. I quickly removed the child-sized chair that was blocking the door. I had to go outside to get the paper.
I don’t want to apologize to Sister first. But I want to reconcile with Sister. In that case, I should write a letter! Since writing a letter doesn’t involve face-to-face interaction, I won’t feel as resistant.
“Fox, you have to be stealthy so you don’t get caught, okay…?”
“Kkang…!”
After exchanging whispers and answers, we began to move slowly on tiptoe.
Creak, as the door opened, a quiet hallway with no one in sight appeared. My plan is to go to the storage, get the paper, and then leave a beautifully written letter in front of Sister’s room.
Could there be a more perfect plan than this?
Of course, I must not be caught by anyone during this process, but I am a wolf with immense talent, and this fox is a magical fox that excels at infiltration better than anyone. It’s a sure win.
Laughing softly, I let out a quiet cry.
“Kkang!”
The infiltration had begun.
