05. New Force

05. New Force.
“Of course, I’m not asking you to do it without any compensation.”
“What kind of compensation can a state institution offer?”
The police chief turned his head to the side and nodded towards the policewoman.
“I’ll explain that part.”
Yeah. A woman’s voice is much better than that old man’s.
“Currently, Yu-eun-nim is the guild leader of the Harem Palace…guild, and is in a position to practically control Gangnam Dungeon City. Yu-eun-nim determines the toll for the dungeon, the growth of adventurers, and their hunting grounds, wielding considerable influence in many areas.”
“That’s right. Just so you know, my annual income is already in the tens of billions, so don’t even think about trying to buy me off with money.”
“…Don’t worry, we don’t have that kind of money.”
She glared for a moment before focusing on the documents again.
“All of this is because our police force’s public safety is unstable. Adventurers are taking down monsters that ordinary bullets can’t penetrate, and as long as those adventurers are the main constituents of Dungeon City, there will inevitably be limitations to maintaining public order with police force alone. If our police force were effective against monsters and adventurers, we wouldn’t need to borrow the power of a guild like Yu-eun-nim’s. Do you acknowledge that?”
“Sure, let’s go with that.”
“But how long will that last?”
“?”
“The police aren’t a bunch of idiots. Eventually, we will regain our public safety, and the city and adventurers will once again be under the control of the police. Maybe the dungeon will disappear before that happens.”
“Haha. I don’t think that’s very likely.”
“As you said earlier, we can raise one from F-class dungeon if we start from there.”
“You said that’s difficult due to various conditions.”
“We can ignore them.”
“….”
“It’s just a dungeon in the middle of Seoul, and it’s just a dungeon where the military is stationed. The Association’s influence? We’ll just ignore it once.”
What? She’s coming on strong.
“Right now, the adventurers aren’t causing much harm and are living in symbiosis with the guilds, so we don’t feel the need to do so, but if necessary, we will even drive out the Association. That’s what the organization is there for. When that happens, do you think Yu-eun-nim’s control can continue?”
“So, what are you trying to say?”
She took a slight breath.
“If you cooperate with this, our police organization…no, the prosecution and police will not interfere with you and your guild in any way, except for the most basic legal clauses.”
“…What does that roughly mean?”
“It sounds like they’re talking about extraterritorial rights.”
Sonya-ssi explains briefly.
Extraterritorial rights…but aren’t we already practically extraterritorial? Why bother-.
“And it’s not just tacit like it is now, but officially recognized by a state institution…but will that be effective? If it becomes public knowledge, wouldn’t Yu-eun-ssi be giving everything away and only taking damage?”
Oh. Sonya-ssi is stepping up.
“…Who are you?”
“She’s my legal advisor. This is Lee Sonya-ssi.”
“Hmm?!”
The police chief is surprised.
Indeed. She’s famous enough for the police chief to know.
“And, the phrase ‘most basic legal clauses’ is also ambiguous. There aren’t just one or two laws, so where and to what extent are you talking about? Even if we acknowledge that, does it create legal effect in itself? Or are you planning to create special laws or clauses to make separate exceptions?”
The policewoman-nuna paused for a moment before answering.
“It seems like there’s been some misunderstanding. We’re not talking about extraterritorial rights. We’re talking about the dominion over this Dungeon City.”
“Does that mean you’re permanently acknowledging Yu-eun-ssi’s control over Gangnam?”
“…In a semantic sense, yes.”
“It’s not even worth discussing.”
“What did you say?”
“Yu-eun-ssi already controls this city. No one can deny it. She has a firm grip on the parts that the state’s authority doesn’t reach. Unless the military is deployed, she can’t be pushed out, but it’s not worth doing that. The risk is too great.”
Actually, I’m confident I can win even if the military pushes in. Hehet.
“So that’s-.”
“The possibility of something like that happening in the future~ can’t be a part of the deal. That’s just your hypothetical. The reality is very different. Even if some police officers gain the power of adventurers, Yu-eun-ssi will have become even stronger in the meantime. The same goes for other guilds. You can tell without even comparing the growth rate of guilds that already have power and know-how with that of you police officers who are starting from scratch, right?”
“No….”
“And you mentioned dominion, but as a lawyer, I interpret that to mean that you’re going to ‘legalize’ the control of the guild leaders, including Yu-eun-ssi, over Dungeon City. Is that what you intend to do? It would take more than two or three years to do that.”
“….”
“That’s why it’s not worth discussing. It doesn’t make sense to create special clauses for one individual, and it doesn’t make sense for a state institution that exists to maintain law and order and public safety to give up even part of that duty. I think it’s better to be incompetent than to intentionally give up duty, don’t you think?”
Sonya-ssi pushed forward almost unilaterally.
In fact, the content itself is too unfavorable to the police.
Just as the policewoman-nuna had completely lost her words, I took over the baton.
“Then let’s do this. Give me an honorary position.”
“…What kind of honorary position…?”
“Senior Superintendent General.”
“W-what did you say?!”
“What?!!”
The policewoman-nuna and the police chief-ajusshi, who had been watching the situation with displeasure, jumped up from their seats.
“If I become a Senior Superintendent General, it’ll be difficult for the police to stab me in the back or abandon me, right? I think it’s a good insurance policy, what do you think?”
“W-what nonsense! Do you even know what rank a Senior Superintendent General is when you say that?!”
“Hmm…roughly equivalent to ‘high-ranking officials’?”
“Ha….”
The policewoman-nuna is looking at me as if I’m ridiculous, and even Sonya-ssi next to me is stunned.
Is it such a high rank?
I thought this was a concession on my part. Well…I guess it’ll be difficult.
“Oh, and as an addition, please make sure that all the police officers who will be getting carried are young women. There are a lot of women in our guild…and also, Yuna-ssi over there hates men. She’s a little uncomfortable, so please understand.”
“Are you crazy….”
“And since it’s an honorary position, don’t order me around just because there’s someone higher up. Just treat me as an honorary position that’s treated well. Instead, I’ll make sure to keep Gangnam’s public safety under control, so don’t worry.”
Yeah. That’s right. There won’t be any humans committing crimes other than me. Other than me.
“Hoo…hey. A Senior Superintendent General is…right below a Superintendent General, you know? From Superintendent General on up, it’s practically the president who chooses them, so excluding their influence, it’s the highest rank in the police. You’re asking for that as an honorary position? Do you think that makes sense?”
“What’s not to be done? I’ll raise you guys well and give you strength, huh? I’ll give you some items too. And…give you advice on various things. So when you guys regain your public safety, ah, then Senior Superintendent General won’t be enough. Isn’t that right?”
“Even so….”
The policewoman-nuna bites her lower lip.
Hehe. It’ll be difficult, right? You can’t do it, right?
There’s no way they’d appoint a fresh twenty-year-old brat as a Senior Superintendent General, even if it’s an honorary position~
It’ll fizzle out like this.
I already have a lot of things to do, so there’s no need to be tied up with the police, right? I have to go to Manhattan too.
“Okay. My condition is that for now.”
“For now? So there’s more?”
“Senior Superintendent General is the minimum. If you can’t do it, please go back. I have nothing more to say. What time is it now…ah, it’s already 2 o’clock. Aren’t you going to sleep? I’m going to sleep. Eucha.”
I got up from my seat.
Then Sonya-ssi and Yuna-ssi next to me, and even Sora-nuna, who was yawning, got up one after another.
“Ah, no…”
And the policewoman-nuna and the police chief, as if being pulled up, stood up.
Ah, by the way, a Senior Superintendent General is higher than a police chief (Senior Superintendent). Heuk heuk. Of course, it’s impossible.
Okay~ then let’s go enjoy a fun sex life-.
“Will that be enough?”
The police chief-ajusshi, whose mood suddenly changed, threw out a random remark.
“…What?”
“I asked if Senior Superintendent General will be enough.”
What…suddenly…?
“If that’s enough, I’ll appoint you. Right here.”
“…Huh?”
I inadvertently made a dumb sound.
Then the policewoman-nuna glanced around for a moment and sighed deeply.
“…Are you really going to do it?”
“Isn’t it inevitable? They say you’re an unparalleled talent.”
“That’s definitely true. It’s the strongest job I’ve ever seen among adventurers.”
Excuse me? What’s going on right now? I can’t figure out the situation.
“…The job title is a bit strange, but….”
…
Shit…talent.
“What are you guys…talent? Then that means you’ve opened your stats.”
Yuna-ssi frowns deeply.
As she said, if I have talent, that means I’ve already entered the dungeon.
“No. It’s different. I just awakened my talent as soon as I opened my stats, but I don’t have any combat abilities.”
“Then does that mean you only opened your stats with an item?”
“Yes. Ah, and I should reintroduce myself.”
The policewoman-nuna handed over a business card.
“I’m Shin Do-hee, the chief of the Gangnam Police Station. My rank is Senior Superintendent.”
“….”
