Chapter 65
My parents and my little sister—yeah, that was something worth asking about.
“Since when were you so interested in my family affairs?
They’re alive. They were severely injured, so they’re just recovering.”
Of course, that was the official story.
I had already built their graves and placed fresh flowers on them every day.
“…I didn’t see them anywhere in the mansion.”
“What exactly are you trying to say?”
“You dodge questions about that building behind the mansion, you lie every time I ask about your family, and I’ve seen carts full of demons enter that place, only to leave empty.
Even the demon you executed at Isabel’s church got swept under the rug….”
“So, what do you want?”
I could see both fear and anger in his eyes.
Like someone utterly terrified.
It made him look a little pathetic, but that was when people were most dangerous.
You never knew what they might do.
“I… I don’t want to believe it.
You said they were fine, that they were alive.
Are you really doing that same disgusting shit again…?”
Muttering like a madman, his hand drifted to the sword at his waist.
He hadn’t drawn it yet, but it was only a matter of time.
Hmm, if I fought Theo, I’d probably die.
He was stronger than most of the so-called elite fighters.
“You should take your hand off that sword.”
Not that I was too worried.
For all his strength, he had morals.
Ah, should I call him the protagonist or, wait—righteous dumbass might be a better fit?
Whatever. The point was, he cared too much and tried too hard to protect what he held dear.
“Ha, and what exactly can you do?
Aside from lying, deceiving people, and ambushing them?”
How did he know?
So much for my crying and throwing myself into his arms strategy.
Maybe the name was too stupid.
“Hmm, I can do a lot more than that.”
“Then explain it to me.
What happened to all the demons that went into that building?
And if your family is alive, why haven’t I seen a trace of them?”
“Do you really need to hear this?”
He nodded.
And this was exactly why I hated impudent bastards.
Speak politely to them, and they start thinking they’re above you.
Theo himself was incredibly strong—my subordinates were no match for him.
But the ones following him?
They were strong, sure.
But they had… vulnerabilities.
For example, if they were distracted listening to someone, completely unguarded—
And then suddenly got ambushed by armed men.
“Fine. My parents and little sister are dead.”
I took a sip of coffee as I spoke.
He better appreciate the effort it took to say that out loud.
“You already know why.
You guys weren’t even in the city that night.
The records show you were here, Theo, but you arrived a little too late.”
“So, you decided demons weren’t even people and slaughtered them like animals.”
“Wow, you catch on quick.
Don’t worry, soon enough, there won’t be a single one left in this city.”
Theo unsheathed his sword.
The glint of the blade was as terrifying as ever.
“Haha, calm down.
What exactly do you think drawing a weapon will solve?”
“At the very least, it’ll rid the world of a monster like you.”
“You won’t be able to.”
I didn’t like fighting.
I was weak, after all. A delicate, innocent young girl.
I smirked, mocking him, and the sword lunged toward me.
If I reached for my gun, my wrist would be gone before I could even aim.
Not that I knew why he was so wary of me.
I never showed him how I fought.
Then again, he was the protagonist. Maybe he had some weird sixth sense.
I let out a long sigh, relaxing my body.
Then, I finished my coffee.
And at that moment, the subordinates stationed around the café sprang into action.
Theo managed to take down one of them immediately, but Isabel, Ethel, and Diana were quickly restrained.
With a blade pressing into their sides, there was no way they wouldn’t get caught.
“Don’t kill them. Just cut their shoulders.
If they try casting a spell, then you can kill them.”
“Miss, isn’t that a bit cruel?”
Marco, dressed in his usual suit and hat, smirked as he taunted me.
As if he wasn’t going to do exactly as I said.
That smug face of his—it made me want to put a bullet through his skull.
“If you don’t, that terrifying hero over there will split your head in two.”
“Oof, now that would be unfortunate.”
My men did as I ordered, slashing their shoulders and holding their swords to their throats.
The three girls screamed in pain.
Hearing them cry out wasn’t exactly pleasant.
Especially since, at one point, we had been friends.
But after a month of barely speaking and avoiding them, could I still call them friends?
I had even let them live and sent them off safely, only for them to cling to Theo like parasites.
How annoying.
Of course, I couldn’t do the same to Theo.
Who could do anything to that walking monster?
“Now we finally have a proper setting for a conversation.
If we’re going to talk, the conditions should at least be equal, don’t you think?”
“Holding hostages and calling it a conversation—”
I expected him to say something like that, but hearing it still pissed me off.
“You were about to split my skull open.
So don’t act like you’re above using people.
If you don’t like it, just kill me and abandon them.”
I pulled out my gun.
Not to aim at Theo—there was no point.
In this state of high alert, he’d deflect it with magic or some unknown technique.
No, my target was Ethel, Isabel, and Diana.
“Ugh, my throat feels a little dry.
Ethel, mind if I take a sip of your drink?”
Ethel glared at me, eyes brimming with tears.
Well, she didn’t say no, so I guess it was fine.
I took a sip of the sweet lime juice she had ordered, but the overwhelming sweetness made me spit it out immediately, wiping my mouth in disgust.
The three of them continued chattering, spewing their little insults at me.
“Shut them up. If they don’t, just kill them.”
Finally, a little silence.
Of course, if a blade did sink into their throats, I could always pour a potion on them afterward.
No need to kill them just yet.
I could threaten to, though.
Ugh, I really was too kind for my own good.
“Anyway, I do appreciate you handling that corrupt baron in the countryside.
And that lunatic count who tried to resurrect his daughter through dark magic.
That was originally our job, but after we leaked the information, you dealt with it for us.”
“You… What the hell are you?”
Still talking, even with a blade buried in his side. Guess it didn’t hurt much.
“Marco, go downstairs and bring me some coffee.”
“And what about the young lady I’m holding?”
I pulled the trigger.
A soft, almost disappointing bang echoed through the air.
A bullet lodged itself into Ethel’s shoulder, splattering Marco’s face with blood.
Of course, she wouldn’t die from that.
It would hurt, though.
“That good enough for you?”
“For fuck’s sake, at least warn me before you shoot, miss!”
“Shut up and get the coffee.”
Marco was smirking even as he complained.
Theo almost lunged at me, but he held back when he saw the gun aimed at Ethel’s head.
“You’ve solved quite a few incidents in the academy.
And you took care of some villains who crossed the line.”
“What’s your point? Quit rambling.”
“I had a feeling things might go this way, so I sent some people to your family’s estate.
They’re all safely gathered in the guest rooms by now.”
A lie.
I had sent people, but just now.
They would be in the guest rooms soon.
Marco returned with the coffee. I downed it in one go, then pulled out a cigar, taking my time lighting it.
“Senior, just stay put for a few days.
It’ll all be over soon.
After that, you can do whatever you want—rip my head off, if that makes you feel better.”
That overwhelming sense of déjà vu had been screaming at me, warning me that Theo would attack.
If not for that, I might have actually messed this up.
Was something finally going my way for once?
Ever since Alicia died, everything had been horrible.
At least this was cathartic.
After all, our great hero already had everything.
A loving family, women who adored him, overwhelming strength.
And me? All I had was money and power.
My family was dead.
The person I loved was gone.
Julian was nothing but a hollow shell now.
So I deserved this much.
It’s not like he lost anything because some demons died.
But this was all I had left.
“Or, if you’d rather play the noble savior, you could cut me down right here and now.
Just make sure you’re okay with your kind, loving parents and adorable little sister burning alive in their home.
Oh, and your little harem here?
They’d be lucky if all that happened to them was getting their throats slit.”
“I… why did I ever…?”
I didn’t care to hear the rest.
Must’ve been nice.
To live a life where everyone loved you.
To be believed without question.
To deal with enemies by simply cutting them down, no complications.
“No time for hesitation. Make your choice.”
Theo silently sheathed his sword.
“Hah. Pathetic.”
I stepped closer, gently patting his cheek with my bare hand.
Then, I tapped the ashes from my cigar onto his head.
And I smirked.
Theo trembled, biting his lip hard enough to draw blood—then he punched me.
I was knocked to the ground.
But honestly?
I couldn’t stop laughing.
“Don’t stab, don’t stab. I’m fine, see?
Let’s let the ladies go and head back to the mansion, ahaha.”
Blood dripped from my nose as I wiped it, but even pain felt pleasant now.
Ah.
Now, this was a beautiful world.
