28. Letter
Our house isn’t that complex.
It’s composed of a straight hallway and rooms attached to the hallway. The storage is at the very end of the hallway, and my room is one space next to the opposite end.
Simply put, the storage and my room are at opposite ends.
“Okay, Fox. You understand the plan, right?”
“Kkang.”
After going out of the room, we go down the hallway and find paper in the storage. Then we come back down the hallway to my room, and that’s it. It’s not difficult, just a long distance.
I peeked out of the door and looked around again. The hallway was deserted. No one was there. Not Sister, not Mom, not Dad.
Fortunately, all the doors in the hallway were closed. I didn’t have to worry about being seen going to the storage.
“Okay, let’s go!”
I stepped out first to lead the fox. My footsteps, utilizing the wolf’s stealth abilities to the fullest, made a loud creaking sound on the wooden floorboards.
“Huk….”
Stop. My body froze.
Did someone hear? I looked around, sweating profusely. Fortunately, no one seemed to have noticed me coming out.
“Be careful, Fox! Maybe the wood is old, so it’s a bit sensitive!”
“Kkang.”
This feels like the time in my past life when I went to the bathroom early in the morning and was startled by the sound, or like when I tiptoed around without Mom knowing and the floorboards stuck to my feet. Of course, I’ve never experienced that…
“Okay, stealthily….”
I gently leaned forward and lifted my other foot. Fortunately, my magnificent tail had excellent performance in maintaining my balance, and although there was a creaking sound, it was smaller than before.
As long as I keep going like this.
“Fox, you’re following me well, right? Huh?”
After taking a few steps forward, I turned around and spoke. The fox, which should have been following me stealthily, was nowhere to be seen.
Instead, I felt something wriggling on my head. Startled, I shook my head.
“Ugh!”
“Kkang!”
My body, which had been barely maintaining balance on tiptoe, lost its balance due to the struggle and fell with a thud. I rubbed my sore backside and looked ahead. The fox was there.
The fox had climbed onto my head.
“You should have told me before climbing, you idiot!”
“Kkang….”
The fox pouted. Hmph, that fox is definitely an idiot. Snorting, I lifted the fox onto my head and started moving forward again.
Stealthily, passing over the creaking wooden planks for a moment. Due to the commotion earlier, something big happened.
“Seol-ah?”
“Huk!”
Sister started opening her door! Sister’s room is next to mine, at the end of the hallway. Simply put, Sister was coming out from behind us.
As I said before, I couldn’t let Sister see me like this. This is the final stealth mission, staking the pride of one wolf and one fox. I quickly looked around.
“There!”
Behind a decorative pedestal in the hallway, there was a space just big enough to hide someone my size. If Sister doesn’t come this way, I can hide.
“Fox, you hide too!”
Hustle- I quickly hid behind the pedestal. Then I swallowed hard.
“… Seol-ah?”
Flinch, my tail trembled. But I have to endure. I can’t arouse any suspicion in Sister. If I do, Sister will come this way, and I’ll be caught helplessly.
“Seol-ah, um… no, no.”
But fortunately, my hiding seems to have been perfect, as Sister hesitated and then went back into her room. When the door clicked shut, I cheered inwardly.
“Great!”
I almost got caught because of this foolish fox, but fortunately, I’m a genius at stealth. I’m so cool. A wolf who is strong, powerful, cool, talented in art, and good at hiding! I’m truly the best talent the wolf tribe needs.
I put the fox on my head again and headed for the storage. Fortunately, I reached the storage without any major problems this time.
But….
“Huh…? There should be paper here?”
“Kkang?”
There was no paper in the storage. I searched every shelf and opened every box, but not a single sheet of paper was found. I pouted.
“What should I do… Ah!”
After pondering for a moment, I came up with a clever idea. I lifted the fox sitting on my head, placed it in front of me, and said.
“Fox, there’s no paper here, but there’s definitely paper in Sister’s room.”
“Kkang?”
“So, we have to sneak into Sister’s room now…!”
It’s not an easy task. Sister is in Sister’s room. It’s like willingly entering a tiger’s den… no, a wolf’s den.
But if we cooperate with the fox, we can surely achieve it.
Alright… With a firm resolve, we left the storage. The storage, which was the last thing we saw before closing the door, was completely messed up from our search.
“… Fox, can’t you clean the room with this stone?”
“Kkang.”
“Ugh….”
We stealthily made our way back. Creak, creak, I tried my best to suppress the wood’s screams. My calves are cramping from walking on tiptoe so much.
Sister’s room is at the very end of the hallway. It’s right next to my room. Fortunately, no one opened a door and popped out on the way back. I stood in front of my room door and started planning with the fox.
“Fox, Sister is in Sister’s room.”
“Kkang.”
Of course. Just as Rang Seol-ah is in the cool wolf’s room, Sister is in Sister’s room. And we have to get paper from there without Sister knowing.
“So, we have to get Sister out of the room first.”
“Kkang?”
“How? Of course, I’ve already thought of that.”
I didn’t just blurt out the plan without any backup. I glanced around, confirmed no one was there, and then whispered into the Arctic fox’s blunt ear.
“Listen carefully, Fox….”
First, I hide in the room. I close the door and pretend to still be upset. And this is the important part: the fox makes a loud ‘kkang’ sound outside to lure Sister out.
In infiltration games, don’t guards come out to check when they hear a noise? I’m using that.
Sister will come out and walk down the hallway to check the source of the sound. And then! I’ll open the door, dash out, and sneak into Sister’s room!
From there, I’ll grab a blank sheet of paper in an instant and then leave the room, returning to my room. The fox is elusive, so it will surely come back on its own.
“Perfect!”
“Kkang….”
“It’s okay, just trust me. I’m so quick!”
The fox, with a worried expression, went out of the room. I closed the door and waited for the fox to give the signal.
Then, I heard the sound ‘Kkang!’
Gulp, I swallowed. At that moment, I heard a sound.
“Seol-ah?”
It’s not me, it’s the fox.
Still, it seems I succeeded in getting Sister out, as I heard the sound of the door opening. Creak, creak… The wooden planks that had startled me with their noise earlier now became my ally and informed me of Sister’s location.
The whole world is helping me.
I heard Sister’s footsteps pass by my door. And then, after some more time passed and the footsteps faded, I kicked open the door and ran out.
“Quickly!”
Sister’s door was wide open. Quickly entering and looking around, I saw various books and papers scattered on the desk.
This paper has writing on it, and that paper is what Sister is writing on…
After searching the desk for a while, I finally succeeded in obtaining a perfectly blank sheet of paper. Time is running out!
“Yup…!”
Leaving the room, I turned my body around and threw myself forward like a touchdown, successfully entering my room before Sister could catch me.
Success!!
“Fox!! I succeeded!!”
“Kkang!”
As expected, the fox was already waiting inside. I cheered, hugging the fox. But it’s not over yet.
“Now I have to write the letter!”
“Kkang!”
The fox jumped onto my desk and came down with my short pencil in its mouth. But that wasn’t necessary. Because…!
“Ta-da!”
I brought not only paper but also Sister’s fountain pen and ink!
“Kkang?”
“When you apologize, you have to write politely!”
It’s not that I absolutely wanted to try using the fountain pen and took it as soon as I saw it. It’s just that I chose the fountain pen as a way to apologize more politely to Sister.
Wouldn’t it convey more sincerity to write elegantly with ink than to apologize with a common pencil?
“Hehe….”
I sat down at the chair and slowly began to write the letter on the paper. Of course, since I didn’t know the words to express my true feelings, I just assembled the letters I knew.
“Sister… I’m sorry… for being angry. I’m not angry anymore… anymore? anymore? Fox, can you write letters?”
“Kkang….”
No matter how I think about it, letters are too difficult for the wolf tribe. But with my smart memory and effort combined, I finally succeeded in finishing the letter.
“To my beloved… younger sibling… Rang Seol-ah. Hehe!”
Since it was my first time using a fountain pen, the paper tore slightly, but it should be fine. I decided to put my seal at the end of the letter.
“Uh… I don’t have a seal, come to think of it.”
As I was wondering what to do, the fox, who was playing with the ink, dipped its paw in it.
“Ah! You shouldn’t touch that!”
“Kkang!”
“Huk!”
As the fox ran around with its ink-covered paw, small footprints began to appear everywhere. Seeing that gave me a great idea.
I immediately followed the fox and got ink on my hands. My hands turned black. Then, I pressed my hand onto the paper!
“Done!”
Elegant writing with a fountain pen, and a cute handprint indicating it was me. It’s a perfect letter. My hands and the room are a mess, but it was worth it. Sister will clean it up anyway.
I quietly left the room and slid the paper under Sister’s door. Then, I ran back to my room.
Hoo hoo, I can’t wait to see Sister’s reaction!
