    Chapter 2

    Ŕëàd́ ̈òn̂ ́Ḱát̃R̃ëâd̃în̂ǵC̃áf̃ë

    ‘…What is she doing?’

Sam tilted his head as he looked at Lucy.

For a while now, Lucy had been standing still, staring intently into empty space.

‘What is she even looking at…?’

Sam followed Lucy’s gaze, but there didn’t seem to be anything worth staring at so intensely.

Unable to do anything else, Sam waited quietly. Still, he kept glancing at Lucy with a puzzled expression.

    ‘She’s acting strange today….’

    Lucy felt different today.

Normally, she would run around excitedly when they came to the forest, but today, she seemed uninterested.

Even when they saw the fawn, her reaction was lukewarm.

    ‘She usually loves animals….’

At that moment, Lucy nodded slightly and spoke to Sam.

    “Hey.”

    “Yeah?”

“I want to be alone for a bit.”

    “…All of a sudden?”

    Sam was taken aback.

“Uh, should I go back to the village?”

    “Yeah.”

    “…Okay.”

    “Sorry.”

    “No, it’s fine….”

Sam turned away with a bitter expression.

“Then I’ll head back to the village first… Lucy, don’t go too deep into the forest. It’s dangerous.”

    “Okay.”

Watching Sam’s retreating figure, Lucy felt a pang of guilt.

But there was no other choice.

To deal with the bandits, she needed to test her skills beforehand.

If she couldn’t stop the bandits, all the villagers would die horribly.

Including Sam. Adults and children alike—everyone would die.

Lucy didn’t want a single villager to die.

After attempting POD’s first stage 1,000 times, she had grown quite close to the villagers.

    Lucy knew all of them.

She knew Sam was the blacksmith’s son, and that her grandfather was the village’s lumberjack.

But she didn’t know the girl named Lucy.

Originally, the lumberjack didn’t have a granddaughter.

This was likely a change that came with the Overpowered Necromancer Mode.

Once Sam was out of sight, Lucy muttered again, “Skill window.”

A bluish screen appeared before her eyes.

    [ Skill Window ]

Lucy began examining her skills in detail. There were a lot of them.

They were categorized into darkness, poison, summoning, curses, bones, corpses, souls, and more. It seemed she could freely use everything, from basic to powerful skills.

Which skill would be best for dealing with the bandits?

After some thought, Lucy chose a skill from the summoning category that seemed suitable.

    [ Summon Demon: Amon ]

She decided to try the skill right away. It seemed she could activate skills with just her will.

    Whoosh-

As she stretched her hand forward, a magic circle appeared on the ground.

A black magic circle glowing with a pentagram.

    Hummm-!

Black smoke swirled from the center of the magic circle, and something gradually began to take shape.

    “Kekeke…”

    Two glowing red eyes.

    A sturdy, smooth black torso.

It looked over two meters tall.

Lucy held her breath as she stared at the being.

    The demon, Amon.

“Was it you who summoned me, little one?”

    Amon asked, looking at Lucy.

“You look small and weak. Not even a mouthful.”

    Lucy didn’t avoid Amon’s gaze.

Instead, she opened her eyes wide and met his stare.

    “Kehehe.”

Amon let out a low laugh.

“Bold little brat. So, why did you summon me?”

    “…To defeat the bandits.”

    “Bandits?”

Amon crossed his arms. His red eyes narrowed.

“You summoned me for something so trivial?”

    “Yeah.”

“Do you even know what kind of demon I am?”

    “…Not really.”

    Lucy answered honestly.

    “…”

    Amon made a dumbfounded expression.

Though his face was just a black silhouette, it was clear he was baffled.

    Amon opened his mouth.

“I am Amon, the Devourer of Despair. If a human weaker than me summons me…”

Amon took a large step forward, standing right in front of Lucy.

“I bite their head off in one go.”

Amon’s mouth stretched wide, as if he were about to swallow Lucy’s head whole.

    “Shadow Bind.”

    Lucy activated a skill.

Shadows extended from her hand, instantly wrapping around Amon.

The shadows coiled around Amon’s body like a snake, completely restraining his movements.

    “Grrk!”

Amon tried to resist, but it was no use.

His red eyes flashed with anger.

    “H-How dare you!”

    “…I’m stronger than you. Probably.”

The shadows tightened further around Amon.

    “Grrk!”

To be honest, Lucy could have just dismissed the summon and sent Amon back to where he came from.

But doing that wouldn’t change anything, so she figured it was better to subdue him with her skills and make him listen.

    Lucy asked Amon,

“Will you listen to me now?”

The shadows continued to tighten around Amon’s body.

    Amon writhed in agony.

    “Grrk! I-I’ll listen! I’ll listen, so please…!”

    Lucy released the skill.

As the bindings loosened, Amon collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath.

    “…I admit it.”

    Amon spoke to Lucy.

    “You’re stronger than me.”

A slow smile spread across Lucy’s lips.

Lucy stayed in the forest for quite a while.

She tested various skills and even had a conversation with Amon.

By the way, Amon is a high-ranking demon, and summoning a high-ranking demon requires an enormous amount of magical power.

“…That’s why it’s rare for a high-ranking demon like me to be summoned. It’s impossible for a human to summon a high-ranking demon with their own magical power.”

Still, there are rare cases when it happens, usually when the summoner uses forbidden magic at the cost of their own life.

“Those who use forbidden magic don’t last long. They offer their bodies to me and make their demands.”

    “Demands?”

“Yeah, most of them ask me to kill someone. Like you.”

    Lucy nodded slightly.

The reason she had summoned Amon was also to deal with the bandits.

The only difference was that Lucy hadn’t used forbidden magic, nor did she need to offer her body.

Even after summoning Amon, a high-ranking demon, Lucy’s magical power remained unaffected.

It was likely thanks to the Overpowered Necromancer Mode.

    Lucy asked Amon,

    “Is there anything you want?”

    “Anything I want?”

“Yeah. If it’s something I can do for you, I will.”

“I like chewing on human heads. They’re very delicious.”

Lucy took a small step back.

“…Not my head, nor the villagers.”

“I know. That’s why I’m planning to chew on the heads of the guys you want me to kill.”

    “That’s fine.”

After all, the bandits who raid the village deserve to die.

They mercilessly kill helpless villagers, adults and children alike.

    “There’s something else I want.”

    Amon said.

“I want you to pat my head.”

    “Your… head?”

Lucy looked up at Amon’s head.

Amon’s head was black and looked oddly smooth.

    “That doesn’t seem too hard.”

    Lucy gestured toward Amon.

Since he was tall, she was telling him to lower his head.

Amon bent his large body and leaned his head forward.

Even then, it was still high, so Lucy stood on her tiptoes and patted Amon’s head.

    Pat pat-

Amon’s head was cold and smooth.

It felt like touching a block of metal.

After patting Amon’s head for a while, Lucy looked up at the sky.

The sun hadn’t set yet, but it seemed like it was time to head back.

If she stayed in the forest too long, her grandfather would worry.

Lucy removed her hand and said to Amon,

“Amon, go back for now. I’ll summon you again when night falls.”

When Lucy returned home, she helped her grandfather with his work.

As her grandfather split logs with an axe, she carried them one by one, working diligently.

It wasn’t easy for her small body to carry thick logs, but she wanted to help as much as she could.

“Lucy, be careful not to hurt yourself.”

At her grandfather’s words, Lucy nodded.

When her grandfather swung the axe, she stepped aside and tidied up the smaller branches. When he finished, she helped him move the thicker logs.

“Lucy, thank you. It’s much easier with your help.”

Her grandfather looked at her with proud eyes.

Lucy felt a little awkward but also proud.

After finishing splitting the wood, her grandfather began tidying up the axe, and Lucy picked up the wood chips scattered on the ground and put them in a basket.

By the time they finished, the sun was setting.

Lucy ate dinner, took a bath, and then went to her room to lie down on the bed.

Her grandfather kissed her forehead and said,

    “Lucy, sleep well.”

    “…Goodnight.”

    “Yeah, see you tomorrow.”

Her grandfather smiled, patted her head once, and left the room.

    “…”

Lucy lay still, staring at the ceiling and waiting.

When she heard her grandfather start snoring outside, she got up again.

Outside, it was now completely dark.

It was almost time for the bandits to arrive.
