Chapter 93: CUT. Carnival (2)

The news broadcasted footage of pedestrians being attacked by werewolves.

It was a scene straight out of <30 Days of Night>.

    Yeoreum was shocked.

“What the hell are those things?”

    Yuna answered.

    “Alien werewolf vampires.”

    “Alien… what?”

“I watched the videotape, and those things from S#15 came out…”

As expected, they were entities that had crossed over.

They were similar to zombies. If you got bitten by an alien werewolf vampire, you would become one too.

They infected by biting with their snouts.

Of course, they were much stronger than zombies and would spread much faster. The entire city could be overrun within a day.

Yeoreum shuddered as he imagined himself and Yuna being devoured by werewolves.

    Darkness fell over his vision.

It had started raining at some point.

The full moon was obscured by gathering storm clouds. Rainwater began to soak the ground.

    Yuna’s face darkened.

“Their weakness is water. But the rain…”

    “Isn’t it a good thing?”

    “No, it’s the opposite.”

    Raindrops pelted the window.

“They’ll avoid the rain and flood into buildings.”

    Yuna moved immediately without hesitation.

She turned on the gas stove and lit a blanket on fire.

She placed the burning blanket inside the bedroom closet.

    “What are you doing, Yuna?”

    “Just trust me…!”

The closet, now a ball of fire, would soon engulf the bedroom in flames.

Yuna shut the bedroom door and taped the edges.

She cut the gas pipe in the kitchen with a knife. Pungent gas leaked out.

As soon as the door caught fire, the gas filling the room would ignite.

    And then, it would explode.

    “Let’s go, Yeoreum.”

Yuna set the house ablaze and led Yeoreum to the rooftop.

The two of them climbed up to the rooftop.

The rain was pouring down so hard it stung.

In the cold rain, Yeoreum felt the warmth of Yuna’s hand in his.

    “So, what’s the plan now?”

“We just need to wait here until sunrise. We only need to endure tonight…!”

    “Why?”

“Alien werewolf vampires die in sunlight.”

They would burn to death in the sun. They had the same trait as vampires.

Until the morning sun rose, they were stuck on the rooftop.

    Isolated together…

Yuna sat down on the rooftop floor. Water was overflowing as if there had been a flood.

    “Yeoreum… sit next to me.”

“Sitting on the bare ground? It’s dirty.”

“What does it matter, it’s raining anyway.”

Yeoreum hesitated but eventually sat down.

The two of them sat there, staring at the rooftop door.

The chance of werewolves, who hated water, stepping onto a rain-soaked rooftop was slim, but they couldn’t be too sure.

    Yuna spoke up.

“Should we have gone to the university festival?”

“It’s probably more of a mess there than here.”

    “Yeah… that’s true.”

The sound of the rain poured down.

In the distance, screams and roars echoed. The sound of car tires screeching and crashes reverberated like an echo.

Yeoreum wondered if the world was heading towards its end.

“You rarely talk about yourself, Yeoreum.”

    “About what?”

    “About yourself.”

    Yuna said.

To Yeoreum, ‘talking about himself’ wasn’t something to be proud of.

It wasn’t something he wanted anyone to know.

    But Yuna wanted to know.

    So he told her.

Stories of his childhood stained by abuse. His troubled school years. The days he struggled to become a killer—

Yuna listened without anger or sorrow, but calmly.

    “So, that’s what happened.”

    “……”

“Don’t worry, Yeoreum. The people who made you suffer…”

    She met his eyes.

    “…I’ll kill them all.”

    That’s what Yuna said.

Her eyes were lifeless. Her jet-black pupils were deep and dark.

The beautiful woman exuded a chilling aura.

    Boom!

    An explosion shook the building.

The house they had rigged exploded.

Windows shattered, and a firestorm swept through the house.

Like mosquito coils driving away mosquitoes, they hoped the rising smoke would drive away the werewolves.

Suddenly, he felt a damp shoulder touch his.

    “Hehe, it’s cold.”

Yuna leaned her head on Yeoreum’s shoulder.

    The rooftop door opened.

Yuna, still leaning on him, moved only her hand.

She threw the sharp knife she had kept in her pocket.

The blade stuck into the door.

    “Ah! Don’t hurt me…! I’m human, human…!!”

It was the landlord who opened the door.

He recognized his tenants, Yuna and Yeoreum.

    “Oh… it’s you students.”

    “Are you okay, sir…?”

“No, I’m not okay. I can’t reach the police or the fire department, and what the hell is going on.”

The landlord scratched the back of his head.

He stepped into the rain and looked alternately at the two sitting down.

“Monstrous things are roaming outside, and suddenly the villa catches fire. You must have been very scared.”

    “Yes, a little bit.”

“I was scared too. But not because of the monsters or the fire. Just now, the lady from unit 307 bit my arm. Not a tiger, but why would a person bite…”

The landlord rolled up his sleeve to show the wound. There were clear bite marks on his forearm.

Yuna quietly stood up, pulled the knife from the door, and turned to charge at the landlord.

The landlord was startled and tried to run away.

    “What, what the hell…!!”

“I’m sorry, please die for us!”

“No! What are you saying, f*ck…!? I have a family!!”

“We have no choice, in three minutes you’ll lose your mind and attack us!”

Yeoreum, who had been sitting, grabbed the landlord’s legs.

    The landlord fell.

    “Nooo! Please, spare me!!!”

    “You can’t go back now!”

    Yeoreum shouted.

If bitten by an alien werewolf vampire, one turns into one. There was no other way.

They had to kill him before he turned.

Yuna brought the knife down. The landlord moved his head.

The blade, aimed at his temple, sliced through his eyes instead.

    “Aaaaaaahhh!!”

The landlord screamed. Dark blood mixed with the rainwater on the ground.

Wolf ears sprouted from the head of the landlord writhing in pain, and a wolf tail grew from his rear.

Even the severed eyes were rapidly regenerating.

He was transforming into an alien werewolf vampire.

    “I made a mistake…”

Yuna threw the broken knife aside.

The landlord would now turn into a crazed werewolf, and they had no chance in a direct fight. They had to run before his vision fully recovered.

She grabbed Yeoreum’s hand and ran.

Just as they opened the rooftop door to go down, they saw a black figure ascending the stairs. Something was coming up to the rooftop.

A kitchen knife was stuck in its back, and a long steel cross was embedded in its chest.

It was the werewolf Yuna had dropkicked away.

Its tenacity was like that of a cockroach…

If they confronted it, they wouldn’t stand a chance. Yuna and Yeoreum went back to the rooftop.

The landlord had torn all his clothes, revealing a twisted skeleton covered in wolf fur.

His bulging eyes, which had recovered 70%, darted around.

    “I’ll kill you…! I’ll kill you!!!”

He roared and swung his forearms.

Fortunately, his vision hadn’t fully recovered, so he couldn’t pinpoint Yuna and Yeoreum’s location.

But the werewolf coming up the stairs was close.

    Where should they go?

    Yeoreum frantically looked around.

He saw two abandoned water tanks on one side of the rooftop.

They were half-filled with water. He and Yuna got inside. Despite his recurring nightmares of being in a submarine, he had to endure.

The landlord let out a long howl.

The werewolf with the cross embedded in its chest also reached the rooftop.

They stared at the landlord standing in the rain.

    “Where are the humans?”

“Grrr… I couldn’t see because I was temporarily blinded. But they must be somewhere around here.”

    “Find them and bring them.”

“No. You come over here and find them yourself.”

“You’ve already gotten wet, so it doesn’t matter to you.”

“Looks like you’re already wet too.”

The werewolf that had climbed onto the roof was soaked from the water Yuna had thrown.

The two werewolves stared at each other and then suddenly charged at each other.

They began to fight fiercely, biting and clawing at each other.

    “Beasts will be beasts…”

Yuna muttered as she listened to the harsh sounds outside the water tank.

The rain-slicked floor was slippery. In the midst of their biting and clawing, the landlord slipped.

The werewolf seized the opportunity, grabbing the landlord and throwing him off the roof.

He fell, his head smashing upon impact.

The werewolf didn’t revel in its victory. Its priority was to kill the two arrogant humans who had stabbed it with a knife and a cross.

It found the two water tanks. It immediately ran over and dug its claws into the surface of one.

    It tore it open.

Yuna and Yeoreum, who had been holding their breath inside, were horrified.

The werewolf stuck its head through the tear. It was a scene reminiscent of <The Shining>.

    “Ha-ha, prepare to die!”

The werewolf laughed. Yuna, unarmed, was helpless.

Excited at the thought of feeding on their blood, the beast widened the tear.

It thrust its snout deeply, ready to sink its teeth into its prey.

    Something grabbed its body.

    “What, what’s this…?!”

The werewolf was lifted into the air.

A gigantic, pale hand was holding its body.

It was the 15-meter-tall ghost giant that had emerged from the large screen in the auditorium.

The giant opened its enormous mouth wide.

    “No, nooo!”

The werewolf screamed. The giant bit into its upper body.

    Crunch— it chewed.

The werewolf’s tail went limp. Raindrops and blood droplets splattered together.

Yeoreum looked up at the giant in disbelief.

“Yuna, isn’t that the ghost from <The Ring>?”

    “Yeah… it seems like it…”

The giant chewed the werewolf thoroughly and swallowed it.

Then it looked down at the second water tank next to where Yuna and Yeoreum were.

From above, the water tank’s opening looked like a ‘○’.

The giant lowered its head. It put its arm into the tank, followed by its head, and then squeezed its entire body inside.

Even though the giant was much larger than the water tank, making it physically impossible, it entered smoothly as if its body had turned into liquid.

    It was a bizarre sight.

    “……”

The two watched in a daze as the giant entered the water tank.

Once the giant was completely inside, Yuna closed the lid of the tank.
