Chapter 62 : Heading Towards the Truth (2)
by AfuhfuihgsIn the North China region, a huge underground research facility hidden in the heart of the Gobi Desert was filled with the clamor of busy
researchers.
The laboratory, entirely painted white, displayed a chaotic scene as the siren announcing an ‘Emergency Situation’ blared, its red light
flickering erratically on the white partition walls.
When a woman with a ponytail, seemingly the head of the facility, vented her frustration, the subordinate researchers began moving busily as
if to avoid her anger.
Her name was Angelica, the director in charge of the Gobi Desert research facility and a capable scientist with exceptional talent in human
experimentation.
“Grab only the backed-up data immediately and proceed with incinerating or deleting the rest of the research materials. We are abandoning
this facility and evacuating to the headquarters in Shanghai!”
Amidst the researchers scurrying around following the irritable command, a cold yet clear voice, devoid of any emotion, reached Angelica’s
ear.
“Contact has been lost with all three SC-37 units dispatched for air defense. It seems the Chinese military has given up on resolving this
situation and is attempting to cut ties using us as scapegoats. Furthermore, the annihilation of the combat experiment squad led by Jang Wei,
dispatched to escort the SC-37s, has been confirmed.”
“What about Eunrang’s clone? Don’t tell me even that was taken down?”
“That is unclear. We cannot establish any contact, whether it turned to dust swept away by the powerful energy wave detected on radar
moments ago, or if the internal machinery malfunctioned due to the wave’s influence. My speculation is…”
“Summarize it briefly!”
“While the exact details are unknown, based on the circumstances, it is reasonable to assume it was defeated.”
“Damn it! We’re all ruined!”
Bang, a loud noise echoed as file folders and writing utensils on the desk scattered onto the floor.
She clutched the hand she had slammed on the desk, enduring the stinging pain, and asked her trustworthy adjutant.
“If we were to mobilize the test subjects and fight back against that crazy b*tch, what are our chances of survival?”
“Exactly 0.3%.”
An immediate reply.
Hearing the words spoken with near 100% certainty, Angelica grabbed the back of her neck.
That man was the only researcher in this facility she could trust completely and entrust with everything, a talented individual.
Perhaps even more talented than herself.
Especially in the field of probability calculation, he had already overwhelmingly surpassed her talent, so his words would be as accurate as a
computer’s calculation.
A hopeless situation where even he was certain of a near-zero probability.
She felt incredibly wronged that such a situation had befallen her, who had expected nothing but smooth sailing after securing the position of
research director.
‘Even God is too harsh. Why give me such a trial.’
Pressing the back of her neck to lower her rising blood pressure, Angelica exhaled the breath she had been holding and opened her mouth.
“Sigh… In that case, what’s the probability of a successful escape?”
“Around 20%, I’d say. Though it would literally require using every possible means, regardless of cost.”
20%.
That was a much higher figure than she had calculated.
A small smile touched her lips at the thought that there might be hope.
“20%? That’s worth gambling on. I’ve risked my life on worse odds to get to this position. So, what’s the method?”
According to the GPS map on my smartphone, my current location was North China.
While briefly admiring the golden sea of sand, reminiscent of gold dust glittering in the sunlight, I felt a momentary displeasure from the
intensely beating sun.
As soon as I moved out of the range of the powerful, cold breath I had unleashed, the perceived temperature soared endlessly.
As soon as my body temperature showed signs of rising, I enveloped myself in cold mana, so I didn’t feel hot or sweat, but having inherited
half the blood of a White Dragon, which is inherently opposed to the fire energy (火氣) contained in sunlight and heat, I felt a subtle
discomfort.
If I had my way, I would have blasted the area with my breath to turn it into a snowfield, but this region is bordered by Mongolia and China.
Acting rashly could provoke both the Mongolian and Chinese governments, so I decided to exercise some patience.
My usual self would have immediately transformed this desert into a snowy plain… but recalling the beautiful amethyst mine and the
monetary compensation offered by the government, I mentally repeated the character for patience (忍) as I flew.
After engraving the character for patience about a hundred times in my mind, a rocky canyon below, marked by an unusual barrier, caught
my eye.
Befitting the rocky Gobi Desert, hidden in the middle of a vast rocky area, I dispelled the barrier, revealing the entrance to the research
facility, which boasted a surface identical to sand, likely for camouflage.
The facility door, which I expected to be firmly shut, was wide open as if welcoming me.
Although the situation clearly suggested a trap, I obediently walked through the open door.
This action stemmed from the confidence that traps were no problem for me, the inheritor of great blood.
Whatever the enemies had prepared to face me, I just had to destroy it all.
Just 30 minutes after thinking that, I was deeply regretting my foolish choice.
Bizarre creatures, reminiscent of that horrifyingly strong test subject witnessed in the basement of the Korean research facility, began
pouring out endlessly.
Of course, each one’s strength was pitifully weak compared to that one, but the problem was the sheer numbers.
Kill after kill, there was no end.
The overwhelming Zerg-rush style offensive, reminiscent of a certain race in St*rCraft, was exhausting.
Additionally, every time I destroyed the partition walls that came down as soon as I entered the facility, hostile test subjects were
continuously refilled, making it impossible to even guess how many more I had to kill to end this.
White frost spread out, freezing dozens of test subjects to death, but the sight of new ones covering them made my head ache.
These test subjects, presumed to be created by putting their own nation’s users into the lab, all reeked of rotting flesh as they charged at me.
Those who looked strong enough to wield considerable force engaged me in melee combat, wielding rebar or concrete fragments apparently
from the destroyed lab, while the rest hindered my movements by casting magic from the rear.
‘They’re much more organized than expected. They lack reason, but perhaps the experience of playing the game as users in the past remains
in their minds?’
It felt like facing users with their consciousness properly intact.
Of course, their movements were absolutely incomparable to users skilled in PvP.
The difference in basic stats and levels was like heaven and earth, so massacring them itself wasn’t difficult.
However, just as even feeble powers can become a driving force for significant achievements when gathered, these test subjects’ interference
steadily slowed down my progress into the facility.
“Annoying!”
As freezing and shattering the endlessly swarming enemies repeatedly failed to reduce their numbers, I drew upon mana of an opposing
attribute to the cold mana I possessed.
The unholy flames of hell swept through the tanker line preparing to charge at me.
Due to their sheer numbers, they were packed together like a crowded subway during rush hour, and the fire quickly spread from one to
another, rapidly intensifying.
Meanwhile, some test subjects, apparently originating from mage users, attempted to extinguish the fire with water-generating magic, but
their desperate efforts had no effect on the flames.
Hellfire, bearing the name Unholy Flame which defies ordinary principles, cannot be extinguished unless by water-attribute magic or
spirit power containing even greater force.
As someone inheriting the blood of a White Dragon, it hurt my pride, but when it came to dealing with sheer numbers, the fire attribute was
superior to the ice attribute.
Watching the test subjects instantly oxidizing into black ash, I couldn’t help but admit it.
As the fire’s intensity grew, toxic gases began to fill the laboratory.
After blowing the gases outside using wind magic, I destroyed the next partition wall to advance to the next section.
As expected, test subjects poured out as soon as the next partition wall broke.
Looking beyond the partition wall, neatly cleared by three blasts of Hellfire, I began to increase my speed of entry into the facility’s interior.
