Episode 102: The Angel Goes to Sea (1)
Leffrey gazed at the sparkling Silver Shoes, contemplating the events that had unfolded in the past week.
‘The second semester has started, and I’ve been diligently volunteering… then I discovered Bethel, one of the Four Heavenly Kings, and like a true angel, defeated her…’
There were many dangerous situations, but they were all resolved.
‘Leffrey, the Capable Angel…!’
Rescuing Soya!
Eliminating a Demon King’s Four Heavenly Kings!
Building a close relationship with Headmaster Iriel!
“I even had dinner with the Headmaster, and even went to Cyworld together!” (TL Note: Cyworld is essentially the korean equivalent of Myspace. Kinda funny that Leffrey is showing Myspace to Iriel.)
Fufufu- Thinking about his achievements, an arrogant expression naturally spread across Leffrey’s face.
“Hehe, So… what do you think? About my amazing connections?”
“…Cute.”
“Huh?”
Of course, Leffrey was trying his best to look cool, but with his angelic face, he could never look arrogant.
He just looked cute.
“Boy, you’re so cute!”
The beautiful girl with long, pink hair, Hongwol, ruffled Leffrey’s golden hair as if she couldn’t resist.
And she even nibbled on his ear.
“Ah!”
“Cute! So cute!”
“U-Ugh, I-I’m not cute! And stop nibbling on my ear!”
Three girls watched those two playing around with cold eyes.
One of them was a gray-haired mage girl, trembling slightly, and muttering, “H-How… How dare…” The other was a girl with black hair, always sporting a blank expression.
And lastly, a beautiful woman with silver hair and golden eyes, colors representing the noble bloodline of the old other world’s imperial family.
Hexi, the Artificial Hero.
Anyway, those three girls were coldly watching Leffrey and Hongwol playing, then…
“Professor, have you seen this video?”
Soya showed them a video on her smartphone.
“Oh…”
“Hmm.”
The two girls, after watching the video, nodded silently.
The prank had begun.
“Thank you, student! You’ve been a great help!”
Leffrey, unaware of the prank, was working hard on his Volunteer Club business as usual.
“It was nothing, really. Helping those in need is our club activity.”
[Helping poor graduate students is an angelic act!]
[You have gained Angelic Power.]
[Helping poor graduate students is an angelic act!]
[You have gained Angelic Power.]
Leffrey, feeling the accumulating Angelic Power, held the hand of the weeping researcher before him.
‘Wait, the system recognized them as pitiful. It even gave me double Angelic Power, showing how pitiful those graduate students are.’
Leffrey felt a slight chill.
‘Just what kind of lives do graduate students lead?’
Shudder- He felt as if he had uncovered a dark secret he shouldn’t have, like discovering the meat in the ramen was actually made of soy, or some other cosmic truth…
‘I’ve become Leffrey, the Cosmic Angel…’
Leffrey shook his head, then looked at the graduate student again.
“No, thank you, seriously. You’ve organized all these samples so quickly… Sniff, I never thought there would be a day where a graduate student could be happy. Now, all that’s left is to finish this paper…”
The Magic University graduate student looked at the countless flasks neatly arranged on the shelves with a touched expression. The various colors of mana contained within them were quite beautiful.
‘Wow, to gather all those mana samples manually… someone must have worked themselves to the bone.’
Leffrey glanced at the graduate student. The dark circles that reached almost to his cheekbones.
‘I’m… I’m really curious just who worked themselves to the bone…’
Leffrey averted his gaze, clenched his fist, and thought,
‘But this is good. I’ve built a connection with the mage tower and the Magic University, so… I’ll be able to help many other unfortunate graduate students from now on.’
And he could gain Angelic Power by helping them, get closer to the Magic University, and gain even more opportunities to earn Angelic Power and build even closer connections…
Truly, a virtuous cycle.
This was how Leffrey, the Profit Angel, never missed an opportunity.
‘And… I have to help Soya, so she won’t be looked down on in the magic world.’
Leffrey nodded.
“Ah, boy. Look at that little thing, crawling around.”
Hongwol, already half in a hunting stance, was looking at the remnants of mana, moving around inside a flask.
“It makes me want to touch it.”
What a creepy thing to say.
Looking at it that way, it did resemble a small bird. It was understandable how Hongwol could mistake it for prey.
Leffrey, looking uneasy, said to Hongwol,
“Hey, Wol, be careful. This is a laboratory.”
“I know. Do you think I’m some animal who wants to break every glass bottle I see? I’m human, you know.”
Hongwol, puffing out her chest, boasted that she was much smarter than that.
But why…
Why did he feel even more uneasy seeing her boast?
“Oh, look, something’s fallen on the floor.”
Yumari’s awkward voice came from behind. Leffrey and Hongwol turned to look. There was a long, green cucumber on the floor.
Really, just a normal, regular cucumber.
“It’s just a cucumber…”
“Nya, nyaang!”
Leap-
The moment Leffrey opened his mouth, Hongwol jumped with a “Nyaang!” sound.
“Ah…”
Where would Hongwol land if she jumped in this small laboratory? And Hongwol, whose jumping ability was several times that of ordinary people…
She could easily reach the shelf where the flasks were placed. With a lot of force.
Crash- Crack-
Those ominous sounds, followed by…
Shatter- Crash- Clatter-
…those unfortunate sounds of breaking flasks.
The graduate student, watching this all happen, fainted on the spot.
“…R-Researcher?”
Leffrey realized another cosmic truth.
As expected, graduate students can never be happy.
“Researcher! Please don’t die!”
“Ah, am I finally free…”
Leffrey, looking at magic university graduate student weeping, grabbed him and shouted,
“No! If this happens, you’ll die as a Forever Master’s! You can’t die as a Forever Master’s, can you?! Wake up!”
Leffrey, truly using such cruel… no, angelic words.
Thus, the Volunteer Club had done it again.
* * *
“Soya! Why would you do something so reckless in a lab?!”
“You played around too…”
Soya, her face hidden by her hat, avoided his gaze. Leffrey grabbed her cheeks and shook her.
“Ow, ow… That hurts!”
“W-what do you mean I played around?”
“I don’t know! You and that cat were touching and playing with each other!”
“Touching and playing”- now those were words that could be misunderstood.
“And I was just copying a video. I didn’t think it would actually work on that damned cat!”
Damned cat- a vulgar way of addressing a cat.
Soya had seen a video of a cat being startled after someone placed a cucumber behind it, and she wanted to test it out on Hongwol.
And the experiment was a success.
“Haah, so, Wol!”
“U-Uh? Is this something I should be scolded for?”
“Of course! Why did you jump so high just from seeing a cucumber?!”
…Hongwol couldn’t answer.
“Leffrey, it’s better to just let it go. There’s nothing more bizarre than a cat’s behavior.”
“Professor, why are you saying a cat’s behavior is bizarre? They’re the best hunters, doing only what’s rational. Not that I’m a cat, but…”
Come to think of it, that was true.
“Professor Hexi.”
“Yes?”
“You’re an adult… No, I mean, why didn’t you stop them? And Mari, you’re the one who gave her the cucumber, weren’t you? Why, why did you even…”
Tremble tremble tremble-
Leffrey trembled, but the four girls were oblivious.
“Soya, it’s all your fault. I had no idea you would use a cucumber like that.”
“W-what? Yumari! Are you trying to blame me for everything? We watched that video together!”
“Oh, so this damned witch and snake… are plotting to screw me over?”
“Tsk, so these are this generation’s heroes? I’m much closer to being Angel-nim’s hero than…”
The tension escalated.
On top of that, they were all superhumans.
“Professor, this is a matter between students, so shouldn’t you stay out of it?”
“You’re all being punished.”
“I really hate using the Seocheon Yu’s influence, but…”
“Tantalus, be ready.”
If these girls were to fight, it would be like detonating a tactical nuke.
A catastrophic event.
‘This can’t be helped…’
Leffrey decided once more.
To use his secret technique.
‘I have no choice but to use it. Angel’s Secret Technique, Chapter 3. Leffrey, the Tearful Angel!’
Drip- Drip-
Leffrey suddenly started shedding tears one by one. The first person to notice Leffrey crying was…
The clumsy professor, Hexi.
“Angel… No, Leffrey!”
“Professor, why are you trying to fight the students when you’re an adult?”
“I-I wasn’t trying to fight! I was just educating them…”
“And you should have stopped them when they were being reckless!”
Hexi, sweating profusely, stammered her excuses. To think that she, who was so haughty before, was now flustered by Leffrey’s tears.
“Sniffle, sniffle.”
Leffrey let out fake sobs, wiping his eyes with his sleeve, as if he were truly heartbroken.
“And Soya!”
“Ah, okay, Leffrey. I was wrong. Please don’t cry…”
Soya had already started crying before Leffrey even started his lecture.
‘Soya…’
Leffrey’s heart immediately softened, seeing Soya cry.
“If you understand…”
Sniffle.
“…You were wrong, then it’s fine.”
Next was Yumari.
“Mari!”
“Leffrey…”
“Are you always going to calculate every single human interaction? Am I nothing more to you than someone who can provide you with benefits?”
“No! Absolutely not. That’s not it at all.”
Yumari’s expression was clearly shaken.
Although, Leffrey’s heart ached a little at that change in expression… but the boy’s lecture didn’t stop.
* * *
Leffrey entered the room and immediately collapsed onto his bed, exhausted.
“Haah, I’m so glad Professor Klein got me those mana samples. Otherwise, someone would have really died today.”
Leffrey sighed.
The boy continued,
“And…”
Staring at the dark ceiling, Leffrey, for the first time in a while, was deeply troubled.
“The heroes all hate each other so much. There’s no way we can do party play like this…” (TL Note: Pokémon Go reference, where you can team up with other people to fight raid bosses.)
The demon king could never be defeated alone.
He was a raid boss.
Buzz- A faint vibration from his smartphone beside him. Leffrey sighed and grabbed the phone that glowed blue in the darkness.
“…It’s an academy-wide announcement.”
Leffrey’s eyes narrowed.
An academy-wide announcement- what kind of insane thing was this crazy academy up to now?
“Due to the national crisis of the demon army’s invasion… we’re combining the Central Superhuman Academy’s Grand Sports Meet and the midterms. I think they did something similar, right before the War of Annihilation, too.”
Leffrey, hiding his anxiety, read the next sentence.
“This midterm and Grand Sports Meet… will be replaced by a monster hunting festival held at the Mariana Camp.”
Mariana Camp? Monster Hunting Festival?
Leffrey swallowed.
A monster hunting festival meant…
“It’s a Monster Carnival. Wait, then…”
Leffrey smiled.
“It’s a party event, right?”
