Chapter 67: The Angel Realizes His Past Life (6)

    Episode 67

    A chance to atone.

Actually, atonement was a very important act in religion.

Humans inevitably commit sins while living, and it was a religion’s duty to absolve those sins through the right method.

‘Honestly, besides all that complicated stuff, I’m doing this for my connections… no, ahem ahem. As an angel, it’s natural to be on good terms with the Theology Department students.’

If he shouted “You are all heretics!” and started cutting them down with the Inquisition Sword, it would just mean war with the Theology Department.

So, the best course of action would be to correct the wrong judgment and farm Angelic Power, heal the divine power of the Theology Department elite seniors who had been selected for Past Life Awakening, and gain favor with the Theology Department.

And make Ramone atone, to gain control over the Church.

    Moreover…

    ‘There’s still more to gain.’

    Leffrey managed his expression.

A boy who forgave the Theology Department students who tried to apprehend him and even healed their wounds inflicted by the inquisition.

This boy even offered a chance for atonement to the corrupted priest Ramone, who had shown such a deplorable side.

With a truly selfless expression, the boy looked at Ramone and said,

“This sword does not belong in the hands of someone like you.”

    Then he looked around.

“How many people have been judged by you and the Berios family? How much divine power, that should have been used for the people, has been wasted by the arrogance of the Berios family?”

    The surrounding students nodded.

How dare the Berios family judge healers and eliminate their divine power? Divine power in the present day was a strategic asset more valuable than any medicine. If the Berios family and the Church hadn’t conducted inquisitions so often…

‘Humanity’s future would have been extended by several years. And I wouldn’t have died like that in my past life.’

    Leffrey bit his lip.

    He made a mournful expression.

Of course, the reason Leffrey was making a mournful expression was because of his own experience of struggling due to lack of healers.

‘Leffrey… is grieving because of the divine power users who suffered under the Berios family.’

The surrounding students, including the Theology Department students, interpreted Leffrey’s expression this way.

“Therefore, this sword does not belong to you and the Berios family.”

    “Th-Then you mean…”

“Swear, in the name of Heaven, that you, on behalf of the Berios family… will relinquish ownership of this sword.”

    Cheers erupted as he spoke.

“As expected of the martial arts department cutie! He speaks so well!”

“What? He’s our swordsmanship department cutie!”

    “Awesome! So cute!”

Flustered by the sudden cheers, Leffrey blushed.

‘Ugh, too much attention…! I’m not a celebrity or anything.’

    Blushing shyly.

A few who had already become Leffrey’s fans, clutched their hearts and fainted.

    “Ugh, my heart.”

“Sniff, it was a happy life. I have no regrets.”

“You guys… Tone it down a little. This is an important moment.”

Leffrey, still embarrassed, turned and shouted, bowing to hide his face from the students, then turned towards Ramone and coldly declared,

“Swear. Or I will use this sword to declare your Church a heretical sect.”

    “O-Our Church?”

    “Yes.”

    Leffrey smiled slightly.

    “Do you think that’s impossible?”

Ramone quickly thought. He was chosen as a candidate for Past Life Awakening because he was considered to have the purest divine power among the current descendants of the Berios family, but that boy has even purer divine power than him.

Moreover, that boy had even shown the miraculous feat of nullifying the inquisition using the Inquisition Sword. In other words, he was more adept at handling holy relics than the Church.

‘H-He might actually be able to use inquisition on our entire Church.’

    Leffrey opened his mouth,

    “Ramone, quickly swear.”

But the Inquisition Sword was also the most important relic of the Church. Without it, there was no way to control the healers outside the Church… but if the Church were to be deemed heretical, then the Church would be destroyed… but there was no way to control the healers other than… the Church’s inquisition.

“I swear! I swear by the name of Heaven, on behalf of the Berios family!”

    Ramone shouted, crying.

“Our Church will relinquish the Inquisition Sword!”

    Swoosh-

The binding restrictions on the Inquisition Sword, which had been a bound item, began to disappear.

    Leffrey, seeing that, smiled brightly.

‘Now the Inquisition Sword is mine.’

The Berios family and the Church could no longer summon the Inquisition Sword. But the Inquisition Sword had already been summoned and had chosen Leffrey as the inquisitor.

In other words, it meant that Leffrey could possess the Inquisition Sword forever.

But this wasn’t enough for Leffrey, The Profit Angel.

He needed more Angelic Power, more profit.

    “This isn’t the end.”

    “Yes?”

“Confiscating the weapon used in the crime… is something we naturally have to do. Atonement begins now.”

Ramone, who had thought the atonement was over after simply losing the sword, started to tremble again.

“Go to those whose divine power you and the Berios family have stolen… and sincerely apologize to them.”

This was something that naturally had to be done.

    And then…

“And if they forgive you… bring them to me.”

    “Wh-Why?”

    Leffrey continued,

    “I will heal them.”

    Leffrey gathered his thoughts.

‘There must be quite a few divine power users who were subjected to inquisition by the Berios family. If I heal all those divine power users…’

    Smile smile-

Leffrey couldn’t stop smiling, imagining the Angelic Power he would gain.

And then, feeling generous from all the profit he had made…

    “This is your atonement.”

    He just forgave Ramone.

The surrounding students, at this judgment, shouted things like, “No! You have to at least strip Ramone of his divine power!” “Where’s the justice?” “Ha… That’s Leffrey for you. Too kind.” “Ugh, so frustrating. I need some soda!” but…

The Theology Department students interpreted this judgment differently.

From start to finish, Leffrey never mentioned revenge or retribution. The only things the boy spoke of were compassion, forgiveness, and faith in humanity.

‘How can there be an inquisition like this? An inquisition that heals and forgives?’

‘Why did that boy heal us? We’re sinners, just like he said.’

‘He said we were without sin even though we committed sins as the Church… to be without sin, because we were created in the name of God.’

‘He got rid of that scary Inquisition Sword. We don’t have to be afraid of the inquisition anymore.’

The Theology Department and the Church reacted very sensitively to past lives.

According to their doctrine, divine power users were beings chosen by Heaven due to the good deeds they accumulated in their past lives, and therefore, it was natural for their past lives to be powerful and holy.

Therefore, the students chosen for this Past Life Awakening were all top elites of the Theology Department.

    And they were shedding tears.

[Restoring the faith of lost priests is a truly angelic act!]

[You have gained a large amount of Angelic Power!]

[Restoring the faith of lost priests is a truly angelic act!]

[You have gained a large amount of Angelic Power!]

Leffrey, surprised by the sudden influx of Angelic Power, bit his lip.

‘What is this? Where did all this come from?’

He quickly checked his Angelic Power.

If he had consumed about 12,000 Angelic Power because of Sanctus, then he had just received about 13,000 for free.

‘I actually gained Angelic Power despite using Sanctus. I can keep hiding the fact that I’m an angel!’

Leffrey carefully sighed in relief and looked at the mansion James had entered.

‘What kind of preparations is he making… that he’s not coming out even after all this commotion?’

    Leffrey tilted his head.

And the other students were thinking the same thing.

    “What is Principal James doing?”

“Right? Leffrey’s the one handling everything.”

There’s a saying in this country,

‘Speak of the devil, and he shall appear.’ (TL Note: The original korean proverb is ‘Even tigers come when you tell them to.’ but i thought using an english idiom that mean the same thing was better)

James was already standing behind Leffrey.

“Originally… I was going to disqualify all the divine power users.”

Only Leffrey could hear James’ mutter.

    ‘Disqualify all divine power users?’

Leffrey, who wanted to be disqualified, smiled brightly.

Could he return to the cathedral without being exposed as an angel?

“I saw everything that happened just now. That unreasonable inquisition and the victims. It was truly a disgusting situation.”

    Principal James declared coldly,

“All Theology Department students are disqualified. Return to your department.”

The Theology Department students, without any protest, packed their belongings and left the guesthouse.

Of course, Ramone, the main culprit behind the elimination of the entire Theology Department, the one who committed the grave sin of losing the Inquisition Sword… couldn’t help but tremble and shakily try to get up.

‘Wait, I’m also a member of the Theology Department.’

Leffrey, putting on a regretful expression, gathered his things.

He sealed the Inquisition Sword inside the bible that’s used as a teaching aid for the Theology Department… packed the rest of his belongings, and quickly got up.

Just as Leffrey was about to causally leave, he heard a voice from behind him,

    “Leffrey, please stay.”

    “…Ah.”

But Leffrey’s trials weren’t over yet.

‘I no longer believe in Heaven. So, I do not believe in divine power users.’

Leffrey followed James with a reluctant expression, while James looked at him, collecting his thoughts.

‘This boy, has despaired of the world. Yet, he’s still holding onto his kindness… How can he speak of forgiveness and compassion after going through something like that?’

So, he wanted to believe this time.

    The light that Leffrey showed.

The judgment that this boy had shown.

“We’ll begin the first and final test. Follow me into this mansion, and you’ll pass the test. But if you fail to enter and end up leaving the testing grounds…”

    James’ eyes gleamed red.

Then the Central Academy students chimed in,

“If we leave… is it dangerous? Like, will we be banished to a dungeon or something?”

“No, that’s too easy. He’ll probably exile us to the front lines of the other world.”

“…Hehehe, good. That’s how a test should be.”

The Central Academy students laughed as if it were entertaining.

‘…What are these students even saying? I’m a professor. What kind of professor would give such a dangerous test?’

James muttered, feeling sick and tired,

“If you leave the testing grounds, you simply fail the test. Nothing else. What kind of crazy professor would give a test like that?”

    He sighed.

“Ha… you all are mocking me because I came from the East Coast Academy, aren’t you? Whatever. Let’s begin.”

Thus, James and the students started walking toward the mansion.

    Leffrey subtly fell behind.

And while the students were focused on the test ahead… Leffrey ran away.

‘Do you know why Itachi is strong? Because he defected…!’ (TL Note: Naruto Reference.)

    Leffrey, the Runaway Angel!

The moment Leffrey defected from the guesthouse…

    “You’ve arrived.”

    James’ voice came from ahead.

    “…Yes?”

Leffrey looked around. A massive chandelier, a marble floor, and colorful decorations.

No matter how he looked at it, they were inside the mansion.

    “Huh?”

“Congratulations on passing the test, Leffrey.”

    James, smiling, looked at Leffrey.

    His eyes glowed red.

“Now, shall we check your past life?”

    “Ah.”

    Leffrey was speechless.
