Chapter 151: The God of Humans (1)
by AfuhfuihgsThe God of Humans (1)
Dust was rising in the distance.
At the front of that dust cloud was a large cargo wagon running, and unlike typical magic carriages, it was pulled by horses, so it didn’t seem to be carrying any particularly important figures. However, when Kaiyak saw those riding horses around such a wagon, his face immediately hardened.
Armor all in black.
Black veils pressed down over helmets, fluttering in the wind.
Kaiyak had seen these humans’ appearance before.
When Yona attacked the headquarters to rescue Alec, he had seen them then.
Though he didn’t know what they did, judging by their appearance, it was hard to see them as people doing good deeds.
As soon as he saw that sight, Kaiyak gave a hand signal.
A signal of raising his palm flat, then suddenly bending it.
Seeing that signal, Alec and Yona immediately lay flat on the ground. Confused by the two’s sudden action, Rubina was hastily pulled down by Yona to lie on the ground as well.
Kaiyak also crouched low to the ground.
Due to his large build, even if there was some distance from the road the wagon was taking, he would stand out if he remained standing upright.
Fortunately, thanks to the thick underbrush, he wouldn’t be visible if he crouched like this.
In that state, Kaiyak observed the wagon with just his head peeking out above the bushes.
Six people in black armor.
The horses were running around the wagon as if guarding it, with a dirty white cover cloth draped over it.
As the wagon drove on, its rear view began to show.
The contents loaded in the wagon slowly began to be revealed, and seeing this, Kaiyak’s eyes grew wider and wider.
The wagon was packed full of women.
Though their expressions couldn’t be seen clearly, their external features were still recognizable.
It was all white.
Though they couldn’t erase the dirty appearance, there was still a clearly visible characteristic.
The women loaded in the wagon’s cargo area all had white hair in common.
From white hair to milky dull white like Yona’s.
Though the shade varied, they all had the same point of white hair.
‘…They’ve gone mad. The Celestine Church has all gone mad.’
With the insight and deductive ability gained from long years as an adventurer, Kaiyak could easily understand what this meant.
The Celestine Church, having been attacked at their headquarters, was all going berserk.
They were likely rounding up all women with white hair similar to Yona’s appearance, in search of Yona, the apostate.
Truly, it was something that could only be described as madness happening.
‘Should I tell Yona about this.’
The deliberation wasn’t very long.
Kaiyak decided not to tell Yona about this fact.
Yona was already unstable enough as it is.
The hardships that kept piling on her showed no signs of ending yet.
If she were to learn that such a thing was happening on top of all that, Yona would surely lose her reason—
Such a thing must not happen.
Having judged so, Kaiyak slowly stood up.
As he rose, Yona and Alec who had been lying down behind also got up.
“What’s going on, all of a sudden?”
Yona asked Kaiyak while dusting off the dirt on her clothes and helping dust off Rubina’s clothes as well.
“A cargo wagon was passing by.”
“Isn’t a cargo wagon not a big deal? The distance was quite far too.”
Yona was quite puzzled.
Even so, isn’t this being too sensitive about just a cargo wagon— she thought.
It would be good to be careful, but it didn’t seem to be a Celestine Church carriage either.
“We’re not far from James’ village now, so it would be good to be careful. You were thinking of stopping by, weren’t you?”
“Well, that’s true…”
Since Kaiyak’s words were correct on that point, Yona silently nodded—
In reality, Kaiyak’s thoughts were not wrong.
In the midst of the unprecedented situation where the Celestine Church headquarters had been attacked, an enormous bounty was placed on the head of Yona, the apostate.
Of course, not only that, for insiders, the head of this apostate was also an opportunity to achieve merit.
However, the territory of the Capatian Empire was vast, and there were only three apostates.
The inquisitors tracking those three, as well as countless church officials, were all busy pressuring their subordinates to demand results in the pursuit.
And finally, as a desperate measure—
Unconditionally rounding up all women who resembled her.
There were all sorts of excuses.
Their hair color was the same, their hair color was the same and their age was similar, so they were arrested.
And since their hair color was similar to the apostate’s, you never know, that level of excuse was enough to gloss things over.
To that extent, the Celestine Church that had been attacked at its headquarters was going mad—
As Kaiyak had said, it wasn’t very far from where they were to James’ village.
After about a day, as they crossed over a mountain ridge, they could finally look down upon the village where they had met James.
The setting sun was about to sink beyond the western mountains, shining red,
And the village nestled quaintly receiving that sunset light was truly a picturesque scene.
“We did arrive quickly though.”
“Well, we walked without rest after all.”
As Kaiyak said, they had walked without rest.
Minimizing even sleeping time, with the goal of arriving in Evian as quickly as possible somehow.
Even so, it had already been nearly a month since parting with Ceres near the Port of Capatia.
“Then the problem is how to get James out, right?”
As Yona said, they were in a situation where they couldn’t enter the village.
There was no guarantee that the Celestine Church’s wanted order hadn’t reached James’ village.
The risk was too great to just barge in.
“I’ll go.”
“It won’t be safe for you either.”
At Yona’s worried gaze, Kaiyak grinned.
Though his alligator-like mouth twisted strangely, Yona knew well that it was a smile.
“Humans won’t be able to distinguish my face. Can you distinguish it, Yona?”
“Uh…”
No.
Even when we went to Lizard Den, I actually couldn’t distinguish well.
They all look like lizards, so there’s no way to distinguish them.
“So I’ll go. Wait hidden somewhere around here appropriately.”
“What if James isn’t there?”
“Then I’ll just come back. Too much worry is a sickness too, Yona.”
Is that how it works.
And so Kaiyak headed towards the village, sent off by Yona and Alec.
Though he had boasted confidently, Kaiyak was also nervous inside.
He already knew well that humans have difficulty distinguishing the appearances of other races,
But there are always exceptions, aren’t there?
The village seemed quite more bustling than last time.
James must have earned a lot of money and returned, so he probably invested in the village’s development as well.
Kaiyak thought so as he carefully moved his steps.
A considerable amount of time had already passed since the incident with the sacred tree behind the village was resolved.
Perhaps thanks to that, the village was filled with vitality,
And even though Kaiyak’s shadow stretched long with the sun at his back, people didn’t seem to pay any attention.
But as his figure entered the village, people glanced and stole looks at Kaiyak.
However, they didn’t seem to pay much attention, and Kaiyak inwardly breathed a sigh of relief.
Even so, he had been worried.
There was no guarantee that the wanted order hadn’t reached this village, but he was confident that he could easily escape from a village of this size if anything happened.
He already knew where James’ house was.
Thanks to that, Kaiyak strode forward without hesitation, and while walking like that, something caught Kaiyak’s eye.
‘…Wanted… poster? Celestine Church notice…?’
Large letters written in red on a wooden board almost the size of a cathedral door.
The demon who attacked the Celestine Church organization, and the evil apostate who controls that demon— Yona.
And those who follow and conceal such an apostate— Alec and Kaiyak.
A notice board plastered with wanted posters depicting the faces of these three.
‘…Did I look like this?’
Though Kaiyak was a lizardman, the image of Kaiyak drawn on this wanted poster looked closer to an ogre than a lizardman.
‘If they’re going to draw it, they should draw it properly.’
Thinking so, Kaiyak once again strode forward towards James’ house.
The wooden door was firmly closed.
But since the window was open, it was easy to tell that someone was inside the house.
Knock knock.
As Kaiyak knocked on the door a few times, a husky voice flowed out from inside.
Who is it?
“It’s me, James.”
Huh…? Uh, wait a moment.
As Kaiyak waited in front of the door for a moment, the door soon opened.
And James, looking quite flustered, opened the door.
“Long time no see, my friend.”
“Ka… No, come in first.”
James hurriedly gestured.
But even so, Kaiyak didn’t enter the house.
Now that he knew the wanted order had reached this village, it was better to leave quickly.
“No. I think it’s better for me to leave this village quickly. Yona and Alec are also waiting outside the village. Meet us at the sacred tree site at night.”
“…Alright. I agree that leaving quickly is good.”
James also nodded with a hardened face.
No sooner had Kaiyak heard those words than he turned around.
He hadn’t thought the wanted order would be spread so densely.
Perhaps it would have been better not to stop by James’ village at all.
That might have been better.
Kaiyak regretted saying unnecessary things to Yona as he hurriedly moved his steps.
Somehow he had a bad feeling.
“Let’s move. Go into the sacred tree site.”
“What about James?”
At Yona’s question, Kaiyak hesitated for a moment.
He wondered if he should tell the truth— but unlike the cargo wagon earlier, this situation was already known to Yona, so…
“Wanted posters were hung up in the village. You, Alec, me. Posters for the three of us were hung up. In that situation, I couldn’t bring James out.”
“Ah… right, that’s true. Those Celestine Church bastards, they’re only quick to act at times like this.”
Yona, who had an incredulous expression, soon smiled wryly and said.
It wasn’t as if she didn’t know, so it wasn’t a surprising thing.
Though it was expected, it was quite surprising that the wanted order had spread even to such a small village.
They’re only quick to act at times like this.
If only they had moved this quickly and efficiently at other times too.
The fact that they only move nimbly after getting hit hard once, made her feel incredulous.
“…You said to meet at the sacred tree site?”
“Yes.”
“Alright.”
Yona answered like that and stood up from her seat.
As she did so, she reached her hand into her sling bag.
The feel of glass beads touching her fingertips, the sensation of those broken glass beads.
Though she had forgotten about it for a while, those glass beads still residing in this sling bag.
The sacred tree site, which was also where she had obtained those glass beads.
She didn’t expect to return there again, but that’s how it turned out.
“Let’s go.”
Yona urged as she vicariously satisfied the sensation of touching Alec’s smooth bald head, which she could no longer touch.
