Chapter 80: Even if This World Becomes a Mess, the Police Still Work
by AfuhfuihgsEven if This World Becomes a Mess, the Police Still Work
“This ceiling is so damn familiar.”
I grumbled as I took in the ceiling of the police hospital, now able to guess roughly which room number this was, and sat up.
What kind of sorcery makes the ground rise up when you just lightly touch the floor?
I knew Sai was strong, but to pull off such a crazy stunt.
From what I saw, I thought Sai would soon be able to face Mina as she had become very strong lately, but I guess I was wrong.
Muttering that she really was a monster, I tried to raise my upper body.
Pain shoots through my chest as if my ribs are shattered and my head spins with dizziness.
Seeing the bandages wrapped around my head and torso, it seems I broke something while caught up in that landslide, but it doesn’t hurt too badly so I forcibly endured the pain and sat up in bed.
It was a bit strange that I couldn’t see anyone else even though this was a shared room. The lights were on, and the clock in the room showed it was 7:30.
But not knowing if it was morning or night, before checking my phone I approached the curtained window and drew back the curtain to see dark clouds and falling snow.
The snow sure is falling annoyingly for winter.
I wanted to close the window after that observation. But I couldn’t bring myself to close it. The city looked strange.
Though the sky was dark it seemed bright as if it wasn’t night, but no people were visible. The city lacked vitality.
No cars were passing by either. The sound of sirens could be heard continuously from far away and the city seemed to be shaking, sunk in anxiety and fear.
Is this really a city in South Korea? The scenery was so desolate and cold it made me wonder.
I hurriedly moved away from the window and checked my phone. Looking at the date, only about two days had passed since the day I went to find Sai.
But checking the news – good grief. I couldn’t help but doubt my eyes.

News reporting events that were hard to believe happened in just two days.
Moreover, what I read was only a small part, and this is excluding incidents of police being killed by some guy or accidents caused by supervillains rampaging somewhere.
Sai’s existence has also been revealed. The situation is beyond description, with the whole world in chaos and a scene of hell unfolding.
There are some slight differences from the Great Chaos incident I saw in the novel, but most of it is the same situation I know.
The event I hoped would never happen has occurred. I closed my eyes tightly for a moment and continued my thoughts.
The world has instantly become a mess exactly as I feared. While I think it’s really shitty that only this part recreates the original work, I did get away from the Special Investigation Team as I wanted.
So I might not be very related to the main story…like hell.
I chewed over Sai’s last words and expression before I lost consciousness.
Even if I try to act like an oblivious idiot, looking at that face anyone would be able to tell what emotions Sai harbored towards me.
I didn’t expect Sai to show emotions like love or affection, but she clearly held such feelings for me.
Having rejected Sai’s feelings and said I would arrest her, retaliation will surely come my way. It will definitely come.
It’s terribly frightening. At the same time, I wondered if I had blown my last chance to arrest Sai now, but I don’t even feel frustrated thinking this is all within Sai’s hands too.
Seeing how she regained her memories without anything particularly unusual happening, Sai must have prepared some kind of trigger to regain her memories in advance and I was unlucky enough to pull that trigger.
She’s a scary and vicious woman. And it’s even scarier not knowing what such a woman might do to me for rejecting her feelings.
My stomach churns and I want to fall into a deep sleep with my eyes closed now, but problems won’t be solved just by sleeping, will they?
“- You’re awake.”
A short knock was followed by the hospital room door opening.
The one who opened the door and entered was Captain Kim, but. He had a large piece of gauze stuck to his face in addition to bandages all over his body, making his movements stiff, and he looked somewhat haggard.
He met my eyes silently for a moment. But only for a moment. The captain let out a deep sigh and said:
“This isn’t something I should say to a patient with broken bones who just woke up, but it’s urgent so I’ll say it. The world is a complete mess right now. Did you see the news?”
“Yes.”
“Do you know what kind of person your junior partner was?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know everything already?”
The captain asked, looking straight at me. I pondered how to answer him and slowly nodded.
In the current situation, there’s no point in denying it, and even if he presses me about this, I have a lot to say.
“…Yes.”
At my answer, the captain sighed heavily as if the ground would collapse. Then he came over to the bedside where I was with staggering steps and sat down with a thud.
“Then you knew about Team Leader Yagi too? That’s why you didn’t say anything.”
Team Leader Yagi. My eyelids trembled slightly at the name the captain mentioned. I deliberately answered honestly that I knew about Sai, but he specifically mentions Team Leader Yagi.
“You’re not thinking of doing anything strange, are you hyungnim?”
“Fuck, the bastards we finally locked up are all roaming outside and the executive bastards are just babbling that this situation isn’t their fault, so there’s no one trying to sort out the situation.”
“Meanwhile, instead of catching criminals, the police bastards are going crazy trying to secure one money line by using those bastards, so is there anything that could be called strange?”
No, damn. If you say it like that, the standard for strange things gets completely shattered…
It seems the outside is a bigger mess than I imagined. I stared at the captain in shock, but he spoke of even more terrifying things as if that wasn’t the end of it.
“I found out during the investigation that Team Leader Yagi might be related to Sai, who’s been classified as a supervillain this time, but damn it. Regardless of prosecution or police, there are many infiltrators inside and the Special Investigation Team 2 members were all moving according to that bitch’s words?”
“I can’t move at all. Investigation itself is impossible. The Special Investigation Team is completely dead. There’s an uproar from outside for not even catching Sai’s identity and not catching the escaped guys, and there’s too much trash inside too.”
The captain reflexively moved as if searching for cigarettes in his pocket. But realizing this was a hospital room, he endured with superhuman patience.
And what he said were events never described even in the original novel.
The novel focused on the superhero protagonist’s narrative and didn’t describe the police in much depth.
The only description was that the Special Investigation Team was half-paralyzed due to Sai’s existence during the Great Chaos incident, but – looking at this, it’s clear what state the investigation team in the original work must have been in too.
Having heard everything he said, I shuddered at the sensation of all my brain wrinkles being ironed flat, but I understood what he wanted to say to me now.
He’s tired too. The superiors are idiots and incompetent as always, and the only useful guy turned out to be definitely suspicious.
His subordinate Sai turned out to be the culprit behind all those incidents, most of the colleagues he trusted are dead or gone and their places have been filled by trash bastards.
Even I would feel really frustrated and angry. And he must be tired. Like the captain is now.
“I know I’m a really shameful and pathetic bastard. When I think about how you must have felt leaving Sai alone, I can’t help but laugh bitterly.”
“But Munsu-ya. I’m saying this because there’s no one but you. There’s no one but you who can move like a proper uniformed police officer. Please… help me.”
Can a person become so tired and haggard in just two days? At his dejected words unlike the captain I knew, I patted the captain’s shoulder… Ah fuck it hurts so much!
If I was unconscious for two days, something must have been badly broken somewhere. The price for momentarily forgetting such an obvious fact was terrible.
I want to just lie down in bed at the pain shooting through my whole body, but not being able to rest even in this situation is my shitty life.
This and that are all Sai’s fault. Let’s go with that.
And thinking about it – now that Sai’s existence has been revealed, the only person who would know how to chase Sai is Yagi.
Whether the captain asks or not, isn’t catching Yagi first the most rational choice?
Since it’s not the Special Investigation Team, it might be easier to investigate Yagi without being marked.
“You didn’t have to say that, I knew he was someone I had to catch.”
“…Thank you.”
I held back my words as I looked at the captain who thanked me with slumped shoulders.
From the captain’s words and the news, it seems society has become a mess, and the people who should be doing something there are just passing the blame around with no one thinking of solving anything.
In such a situation, it must have been hard for the captain, a relatively diligent police officer, to be unable to do anything.
This guy really lives a tough life too. I took off my patient gown and changed into my clothes placed in the hospital room closet.
Checking my inside pocket – fortunately, the syringe containing the superpower neutralizing drug was intact. It felt like a miracle that it was intact in the midst of all this. But more than that.
“- Captain, where is New Hope?”
No matter how much I searched the news, not a single line about New Hope came up.
No matter what, there’s no way she wouldn’t do anything in this situation, right?
I asked the captain. He rolled his eyes and smirked for a moment before answering.
“That kid…”
That kid? I asked again. At his next words, I hurriedly ran outside.
“When that Sai bastard caused the incident. She was badly hurt. But that kid asked to be taken to your house. So I took her there.”
“What the hell, baldy?”
What nonsense is this baldy spouting now? No, why is that kid at my house? And this baldy just took her to my house as if it was natural?!
I frowned and moved at the incomprehensible situation – fuck, my chest hurts!
I should have gotten painkillers before moving, damn it.
I wiped away the tears that trickled out and let out a sigh.
